Learn to dance many styles at the Music Center’s A Taste of Dance + Fitness. A TASTE OF DANCE + FITNESS March 27 @ Music Center Plaza by dov rudnick

H aow m ny times have you said to yourself, “One of these days, I’m gonna learn to dance salsa,” or samba, or meringue, or hip-hop, or any number of dance styles … but you put it off, instead coming up with some – any – excuse, like that you don’t have enough time or money. Ya basta! Toss all of your excuses to the side. A Taste of Dance arrives again this year at the Music Center Plaza and demands that you proceed to the dance floor. The event sets up shop throughout the plaza, including between the Mark Taper Forum and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in the sprawling courtyard around the fountain. Some five or six dance floors are installed, and classes are provided at the ridiculously low price of $1 per 20-minute interval. You might ask, how can such a thing happen? It’s all made possible by the Music Center. So indulge … put aside all the well-worn excuses and get your tickets to groove. Here’s how it works: The ticket counter opens at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, and you can buy a ticket in the form of sticker (Why not call it a “sticket?”) for the class you want to take and the time. Classes generally last about 20 minutes and begin anew every half hour, beginning at 11:30 a.m. and continuing until 3:30 p.m. At 11 a.m. a free half-hour warm-up is offered, and at 3:30 p.m. take advantage of the 45-minute closing dance, Bollywood Blast, which is also free. The individual classes are limited, which is a good thing because it can get crowded. In recent years the secret has leaked out, and now classes tend to fill up. It is definitely a good idea to arrive early. The best thing about A Taste of Dance is the warm, friendly vibe that pervades the atmosphere. It is simply impossible to be in a bad mood after spending a little time among the spirited booty shakers who migrate to this event twice a year. People of all ages, from grannies to grandkids, fill the ranks of enthusiastic dancers. It is always surprising to observe the dancing ability of folks you might never imagine could get down. In the past, the dance forms have been as varied as the Charleston to krumping to Country Western, but this year a theme is presented: fitness. All the dance forms are geared to getting your sweat on. The morning session – from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. – consists of Cardio Samba, Jazzercise, Hip Hop Aerobics, Hula Workout and the latest craze, Zumba. The afternoon session – from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. – includes Bellydance Burn, Salsa Workout, Pure Barre, Step Dance Aerobics and (I can only imagine) Cardio Ballroom. The day concludes with a group class involving any and all dancers present called Bollywood Blast. What is guaranteed is that the entire event itself will be a blast. How could it not be? You have sun, music and hundreds of beautiful people getting down and feeling good. No experience is necessary but dress in comfortable clothes/shoes. Also, some classes may be danced barefoot. And it’s cash only, so have your dollar bills handy.

Music Center Plaza is located at 135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles. For more information, visit musiccenter.org.

D um Dum Girls release their debut album, I Will Be, March 30 through Sub Pop. SPRING MUSIC GUIDE BY china bialos

S wedish party band Love is All releaseD Two Thousand and Ten Injuries on Polyvinyl, this week. They’ll also be at the Echo on April 18, and are not (not!) to be missed. Yesterday was also the first of two spring dates seeing fresh, collector- friendly releases by Swiss post-punk girl group LiLiPUT (Kleenex, prior to 1980). Live Recordings, TV-Clips and Roadmovie (Kill Rock Stars) is a CD/DVD set featuring previously unreleased tracks, video footage and super-8 tour footage from 1982; the CD boasts a 24-track listing comprised of two concerts, Kleenex live in Biel in 1979, and LiLiPUT live in Zurich in 1983. This release precedes a four-LP box set (Kill Rock Stars, May 18) by the band,. Also being dusted off is the 1971 record What a Beautiful Place, by British singer Catherine Howe; originally released by Reflection Records and then left to rest in obscurity after the label’s demise, the record is now being re-released by the Numero Group, a year after her most recent, Lucy Snowe. A peaceful contrast to a long- awaited – supposing no one’s given up! – sophomore record from psych-rockers Serena- Maneesh, whose S-M 2: Abyss in B Minor (4AD) released as well. March 30 brings the Sub Pop debut from Dum Dum Girls, I Will Be. This new band of Kristin Gundred, former drummer and vocalist for Grand Ole Party, is somewhat of a hybrid of the Phil Spector fandom that could be found not long ago with Glasvegas and the lo-fi ’90s influence in the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. But it’s a huge turnaround from her work with Grand Ole Party. On April 6, post-rockers Red Sparowes, another group out of Los Angeles, release The Fear is Excrutiating, but Therein Lies the Answer (Sargent House) – rather appropriate for the genre, no? See Explosions in the Sky. Head to the Echoplex on May 8 to see them play alongside Fang Island. For something a bit less lush, pick up a remastered version of Elliott Smith’s 4-track solo debut, Roman Candle (Kill Rock Stars), a personal favorite in the career of the late singer-songwriter. Or, there’s Jakob Dylan’s sophomore solo effort, Women and County (Columbia), produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring vocals from Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. Also out is a four-way split among Ty Segall, CoCoComa, White Wires and Charlie & the Moonhearts (Trouble in Mind). Every season appears to see a new release of some sort from Scottish noise-bastards the Twilight Sad; they’re quite fantastic, however, so it’s with no hesitation that I recommend their dreary “The Room” 7-inch (FatCat), a new single off last year’s Forget the Night Ahead, out April 12 (rescheduled from March 29). Sadly, bass player Craig Orzel left the group last month (perhaps to pursue electronic side project Orzelda?), but the Twilight Sad remain set to support Mono on tour this spring, stopping at the El Rey on May 7. Look to April 13 for Steal Your Face (Thrill Jockey), the newest from Black Eyes spinoff (and frequenters of the Smell) Mi Ami. One week later is Neu! knockoff Caribou, whose Swim (Merge) comes out the same day as a new release from the rather aged former 13th Floor Elevator Roky Erickson (True Love Cast Out All Evil, Anti-). And of course, worth a mention is a split 7-inch from the Thermals and the Cribs (Kill Rock Stars), which should, if all character is intact, be at once poppy and punky and the tiniest bit sloppy. April 27 brings – finally! – the first release in several years by Frog Eyes, fronted by a rather Tigger-esque Carey Mercer. Paul’s Tomb: A Triumph is the band’s debut for Dead Oceans. May 4, expect I Learned the Hard Way (Daptone), the newest from bloody good soul singer Sharon Jones and her brass band the Dap Kings. Also keep a lookout for Cosmogramma (Warp), from Flying Lotus; the record briefly features Thom Yorke and, rather conveniently, Flying Lotus will be opening for Yorke’s supergroup, Atoms for Peace, this spring. No Los Angeles dates as of press time, but they will be stopping at the Santa Barbara Bowl on April 17. Rumored for spring release are new records from former Gris Gris/Mirrors frontman and guitar virtuoso Greg Ashley, whose third solo LP will likely be out on Birdman. And the Psychic Paramount, whose excellent and deafening Gamelan into the Mink Supernatural is now five years into the past, and whose sophomore record II has been in the works since 2008 and delayed from last year by No Quarter Records. Live appearances are respectively scheduled only in and Europe, sadly.

And, during the third quarter of last Friday night’s game against the Timberwolves at Staples Center, he strained his left Achilles’ tendon. Luckily, it is not a torn Achilles, which means that the 22-year-old should only be sidelined for a matter of weeks rather than months. And luckily, the Lakers have Lamar Odom to move into the starting rotation (with Pau Gasol transitioning to center). Bynum has been averaging 20 points, 10.3 rebounds and two blocks in the last four games (The 52-18 Lakers are on a six-game winning streak.). The team definitely needs him to return soon since there are only 12 games left in the season before the playoffs begin. Although Odom has suffered from a sore left shoulder since Feb. 18, he has averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds in the 15 games since that injury. He should be a solid contributor on the floor in Bynum’s absence. The Lakers head out on their final long road trip this season this week: to San Antonio (41-27) Wednesday, Oklahoma City (42-26) Friday, Houston (36-32) Saturday and New Orleans (33-38) Monday.

GALAXYKICK GALAXY LOOK TO SURPASS 2009 PERFORMANCE BYr ma vin g. Vasquez

T he Los Angeles Galaxy squad begins its 2010 season hosting the New England Revolution this Saturday at the Home Depot Center at 8 p.m. Striker Landon Donovan has everyone’s eyes now, especially since midfielder David Beckham is out for the following six months due to a torn Achilles’ tendon. Donovan recently arrived from England since he was on loan in Everton at the English Premier League, where he shined every time he stepped onto the field. Arguably the most talented American soccer athlete, Donovan is the axiomatic leader of the Galaxy. Nevertheless, the Galaxy is a team full of young and experienced players who make them the team to beat in the Western Conference. The Galaxy are looking to defend their 2009 Conference championship and earn a ticket to the MLS Cup yet again. On the roster for Los Angeles are defensive studs Donovan Ricketts (goalkeeper), Omar Gonzalez and Sean Franklin. Gonzalez and Franklin received Rookie of the Year honors for the last two seasons, respectively. Gregg Berhalter’s veteran play and experience in the backfield is a big plus, too. Defender A.J. DeLaGarza is perhaps the player who will make the biggest impact for the group this coming season. With the absence of Beckham, either veteran Eddie Lewis or Chris Klein has to step up to solidify the midfield for the unit. Offensively, head coach Bruce Arena has a lot to choose from. Arena can count on Edson Buddle, Alecko Eskandarian, Jovan Kirovski and Donovan. Donovan is the evident leader on the pitch, but Arena is the mind behind Galaxy’s strategic planning. During the off-season, Arena was crucial in signing three young, talented individuals of Brazilian descent in Juninho (midfielder), Leonardo (defender) and Alex (defender).

CENTERICE DUCKING NO. 600

BY parimal m. rohit County Register/MCT Rose Palmisano/Orange Teemu Selanne of the Anaheim Ducks

D ucks winger Teemu Selanne is searching for a contraption that would convert goals into points for both the scoreboard and the regular season standings. After all, the Ducks need to make up seven points in their final 10 games, and the Finnish Flash has a few goals to spare for his team to keep its very slim playoff hopes alive. While such a device has yet to be invented, Selanne, who scored his 600th career goal during a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night, may have to settle for his possible final NHL season to be one of personal milestones but team disappointment. To his credit, Selanne (1,248 career points) is only the 18th player in NHL history to join the 600 Goal Club, whose membership includes Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Luc Robitaille. He is also just the third-ever European-born NHLer to score 600 career goals, joining fellow Finn Jari Kurri and the Czech Republic’s Jaromir Jagr. If only Selanne’s personal successes were enough to help the Ducks qualify for next month’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. Still, should the Ducks miss this year’s playoffs and Selanne carry through with his retirement plans, the right winger should not be disappointed with his resume. His 373 career goals as a Duck are a franchise record. He also helped the Ducks win a Stanley Cup in 2007. Even more, Selanne’s career numbers indicate he is the consummate team player, notching more assists (648) than goals (600). He has become the face of the franchise and helped Anaheim establish itself as a legitimate NHL club despite its Southern California roots. While Selanne would love his 600 Goal Club membership to include a Stanley Cup trophy, the Finnish Flash has a lot to be proud of should the Ducks fall short in the coming weeks.
