The Disciplines: on Virgins, Menace and Nor Egians
2/29/12 Gigape | The Disciplines: on Virgins, Menace and Norwegians search username admin password •••••••••••••• login | stay logged in posts users Home Music Features Reviews Showcase Directory Shop Chat Map The Disciplines: on Virgins, Menace and Norwegians 2011-05-05 10:15:02 Like One person Ken Stringfellow has played in bands like REM, Big Star, and The Posies. But now he's helming a band called The Disciplines. "I liked that the word could connote something scientific and nerdy, and at the same time something sordid and nasty," said Ken. The Disciplines play scruffy balls-to-the-wall rock – 70s Detroit-style. Oh, and three of the band members are Norwegians still studying for medical and educational qualifications. All fuel to the fire for Ken's punky mix of sarcasm and political riffing on latest album Virgins of Menace. So how does an American, now living in France, form a band with three Norwegians? "Well, my Norwegian sucks," joked Ken. "Jeg snakke ikke Norsk!" Ken was approached by the band Briskeby, who had chart success in Norway. "They looked me up, being fans, and we ended up collaborating on a hit single," explained Ken. "Then they broke up. Just like that." So Ken formed the Disciplines with three of the band members from Briskeby. "In many ways, I'm the musical equivalent of academia," said Ken "It's important I publish, but almost no one in the wider world can understand what I do, nor do they even hear it. Thank god for enthusiastic, more successful musicians who scoop me up and give me gigs, right?" After the critical success of their first album Smoking Kills released in 2009, Ken has taken fame and success in his stride. -

"Rock and Roll's Been Very Very Good to Me," Rhett Miller Sings On
"Rock and roll's been very very good to me," Rhett Miller sings on "Longer Than You've Been Alive," an epic six-minute stream-of-consciousness meditation on his life in music. It's a rare moment of pulling back the curtain, on both the excesses and tedium of the world of a touring musician, and it's the perfect way to open the Old 97's new album, 'Most Messed Up.' "I wrote that song very quickly and didn’t rewrite one word of it," Miller explains. "It's sort of a thesis statement not just for this record, but for my life's work." To say that rock and roll has been good to the Old 97's (guitarist/vocalist Miller, bassist/vocalist Murry Hammond, guitarist Ken Bethea, and drummer Philip Peeples) would be an understatement. The band emerged from Dallas twenty years ago at the forefront of a musical movement blending rootsy, country-influenced songwriting with punk rock energy and delivery. The New York Times has described their major label debut, 'Too Far To Care,' as "a cornerstone of the 'alternative country' movement…[that] leaned more toward the Clash than the Carter Family." They've released a slew of records since then, garnering praise from NPR and Billboard to SPIN and Rolling Stone, who hailed the band as "four Texans raised on the Beatles and Johnny Cash in equal measures, whose shiny melodies, and fatalistic character studies, do their forefathers proud." The band performed on television from Letterman to Austin City Limits and had their music appear in countless film and TV soundtracks (they appeared as themselves in the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston movie 'The Break Up'). -

Regardless of what your opinion about R.E.M. is, there's no denying that they shaped the face of alternative rock for years. Heck, they've basically been every kind of alternative rock band themselves. They spent their formative years as cult favorite college rockers. Then, they started attracting more and more attention until they were making music with genuine mainstream appeal. Between 1991 and 1992 alone, they released the folk- inspired Out of Time and the baroque Automatic For The People, making them easily the most successful band to attack the audiences of the early grunge era with both mandolins ("Losing My Religion") and string arrangements (A good chunk of Automatic ). -

Mass Manslaughter: but Less Than a Felony,Sometimes an Ear Is Just an Ear: Baylies Band Releases Freudian Ears,RIP Andy Gill &Am
Spring Growth: New albums and local shows kick the season off right The Z-Boys – Elwood Here’s (I’m assuming) a Motif exclusive: Elwood, the sophomore album from Newport’s The Z-Boys, hits the streets March 6. They’re a band known for their high-energy performances. With tempos and influences all over the place, it’s like a dump truck careening along the edge of a canyon road. Fans will be pleased that the new album manages to keep much of the mayhem intact. You may be familiar with the brand of “everything overload” the Newport band pours into the cauldron, throwing in blues rock, surf, Latin, country and more. Distilling a dynamic live band into an album format can be difficult. Studio constraints have the Z-Boys a bit more restrained, but without a lot of production fluff. “You Lie” is familiar blues rock territory about lying, cheating, etc, and “Don’t Have to Hang Around” is a folk-Mariachi tune mixed with a pleasant country vibe. “Too Slow” is a Steely Dan-like shuffle with a barrage of drum fills, and “Wanna Be Sure” features chunky, arena rock power chords. The downside with the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink method is there’s no real standout track. Elwood has the expected guitar fireworks present in every song, along with rock solid, tasteful bass playing. The drumming is enthusiastic if not overbearing at times, like Keith Moon on Lite Rock 105. I think the best times are when they just fuckin’ go for it full bore without bothering with a melody.
