This long-distance endurance rally car was stripped to a bare shell before being purpose built for the 2016 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, a now famous endurance rally. There is no doubt that in the right hands, this is a potential rally winner. AMC (American Motor Corporation) was formed by the merger of Nash Kelvinator (as in fridges) and the Hudson Motor Co. in 1954 and soon competed with the big three despite being a much smaller company. Innovative engineering such as tandem master cylinders and manufacturing practices such as shared componentry helped the company compete along with the far-sighted purchase of Jeep. A largely unsuccessful merger with Renault followed the eventual absorption by the Chrysler Corporation which phased out the AMC brand by the late 1980s. The AMX was a mix of sports car and muscle car. Production ran for just three years from 1968 to 1970 and was unique in being the only steel constructed two seater car made in America at the time and voted ‘Best Engineered Car of the Year’ in 1969 and 1970 by the American Society of Automotive Engineers. Rally preparation includes a bespoke roll-cage which follows modern practice of reinforcing the bodyshell and suspension pick up points. -

SERIAL NUMBERS FOR Hudson - Essex - Essex-Terraplane & Terraplane 1909-1957 INTRODUCTION A study of Hudson serial numbers is, to say the least an interesting exercise. I have been working on the numbers for over 30 years, and I doubt I fully understand the Hudson system. The main problem with researching these numbers is that over several sources I found many disagreements - even within Hudson publications. A good example of this confusion is the 1948-1954 numbers. Most Hudson sources give -101 as the starting number from 1948 thru 1954, regardless of model. Other sources gave other starting numbers. Over the years as we obtained more information from various sources, such as copies of two documents that listed 1946 thru 1954 Monthly Model Year Production Data giving a monthly break down of serial numbers, we have incorporated that data into our data base. For example for 1948 serial numbers 101-860 are shown as being produced in October 1947. We combined the two (1946-1947 and 1948-1954) into one document and it is reproduced in this booklet. When all is said and done we cannot say that these figures, especially the early numbers, are entirely accurate. We have done the best we can with what we had, but we feel that what we have is as accurate as can be found. The main sources of these numbers are as follows: Various Hudson parts book; Branhams Automobile Reference Book NADA Official Used Car Guides; Official Blue Book New & Used Car Guide We found the Branhams books to be quite accurate when compared against Hudson books. -

All Rights Reserved Introduction The author, a licensed Professional Engineer, has also been employed in an engineering capacity by all “Big Three” automakers; GM, Ford, & Chrysler. Here he has sought to investigate the series of events that made Detroit, Michigan the automotive capital of the world. Detroit, Michigan is a place, off the beaten path, in an isolated glove-shape piece of land thrust up between two lakes, with sometimes very inclement weather. Ohio and Indiana, who were also active in the creation of the auto industry in the U.S., are in the same general area of the country as Michigan and share the same climate. How did the industry get its start in this three-state area. One would think that other parts of the country would be more conducive to the formation of such an important part of the history of this nation. Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana were not members of the original 13 states and therefore have to be considered less developed territories than the original thirteen states around the turn of the 19th century when the American gasoline powered automobile was invented. Read how the author has searched for the answers to these somewhat perplexing questions surrounding why Detroit became “The Motor City”. -

HETHS has a good start on our goals but we are missing a formal research activity. This research paper sponsored by the HET Southern California Chapter, is a step to fill that void. It is hoped that other chapters and members will pursue their curiosity and help fill the void with serious investigations and reporting. The single-story porch has an off-center entry accented with a shallow pediment. Eastlake details like spindles, a turned balustrade, and turned posts adorn the porch, which extends across the full front elevation and wraps around one corner. The house at 1315 McKinley Avenue also displays a wraparound porch, spindle detailing, steep roof, fish scale wall shingles, and cut-away bay on the front elevation. An umbrage porch on the second floor and multi-level gables on the primary façade add to the asymmetrical character of the house. More typical examples of Queen Anne houses in the district display a variety of these stylistic features. Examples of more common Queen Anne residences in Bay City include 1214 Fifth Street, 600 North Monroe Street, and 1516 Sixth Street (Figures 6.2-9, 6.2-10, and 6.2-11). In general, these buildings have irregular footprints and roof forms. Hipped roofs with cross-gabled bays are common, as are hip-on-gable or jerkinhead details. Porch styles vary but typically extend across the full or partial length of the front elevation and wrap around the building corner. -

Chapter 1 Aircraft Designations and Popular Names Background on the Evolution of Aircraft Designations Aircraft model designation history is very complex. To fully understand the designations, it is important to know the factors that played a role in developing the different missions that aircraft have been called upon to perform. Technological changes affecting aircraft capabilities have resulted in corresponding changes in the operational capabilities and techniques employed by the aircraft. Prior to WWI, the Navy tried various schemes for designating aircraft. In the early period of naval aviation a system was developed to designate an aircraft’s mission. Different aircraft class designations evolved for the various types of missions performed by naval aircraft. This became known as the Aircraft Class Designation System. Numerous changes have been made to this system since the inception of naval aviation in 1911. While reading this section, various references will be made to the Aircraft Class Designation System, Designation of Aircraft, Model Designation of Naval Aircraft, Aircraft Designation System, and Model Designation of Military Aircraft. All of these references refer to the same system involved in designating aircraft classes. This system is then used to develop the specific designations assigned to each type of aircraft operated by the Navy. The F3F-4, TBF-1, AD-3, PBY-5A, A-4, A-6E, and F/A-18C are all examples of specific types of naval aircraft designations, which were developed from the Aircraft Class Designation System.
