There’s a double dose of that in this issue with “The Eccentric World of AMC” and “Lots of Trouble, Usually Serious,” an experiential piece chronicling an epic journey in a 32-year-old Lotus Esprit. • Gremlin Story, by Marc Goldblatt Classic-Technologies.Com
Gremlin Story, by Marc Goldblatt Classic-Technologies.com On February 1, 2016, I had an hour for lunch and I needed to ship out a Classic Technologies fuse box that day. However, I was out of paper preventing me from printing out the manuals I include with each sale. The plan was to buy paper, run home, print out the documents, close-up the package, and bring it to the post office. The first place I stopped surprisingly didn’t have paper so I ended up cutting through my neighborhood to go to another store. I happened to drive by a house that was having a detached garage being torn down and saw an old filthy car parked on the side of the road. It was a 1974 AMC Gremlin with a 232 inline six motor. I continued my errand and rushed back to look at the car. I saw that it had 48k miles, no rust, and was all original. I asked if it was for sale and was told yes, and they would take anything for it. They wanted it gone as soon as possible; clearly not knowing the value of a classic car in this condition. It had been parked since 1985 and the motor was frozen, one of the wheels was frozen and there were no keys or title to the car. First I offered $500 and they reiterated, we will take anything for it. I went to the ATM and returned asking if they would take $250; and they said $300 and its yours. The deal was done and the whole time I was thinking what am I going to tell my wife because I have two other classic cars and one that is still not finished after a few years of working on it.

AUTOMOTIVE HISTORIES DRIVING FUTURES Inaugural conference of Automotive Historians Australia hosted by RMIT Design Archives RMIT School of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture Monash University Melbourne, Australia 1– 3 September 2016 CONFERENCE PAPER ABSTRACTS OIn conference program order Laura Belik - Parsons: The New School for Design, USA Cities to whom, by whom? The Minhocao elevated highway case study in São Paulo/ Brazil Abstract São Paulo of the 20th century was a city built for cars. The Avenue Plan ruled how the city would grow, and consequently, how its population would live. Amongst other consequences, the city slowly lost access to public spaces and to a more humanized scale. Nowadays this situation has been facing some changes: people started to claim for new uses of the built environment engaging with concepts of spatial democracy. This paper will explore one case study within São Paulo (Brazil): The Minhocão, a soon-to-be deactivated elevated highway, and the debates involving a range of actors over the future of the structure. Considering urban land as a commodity, especially when it comes to its road system, it is difficult to separate the uses of any space without understanding them as a repercussion of the power of capital or governing influences. The main challenge is to understand how to make public spaces and the cities more democratic, and, in this sense, how to recognize the potential city spaces can have. A city that was once ruled by the automotive planning, today is repurposing itself through popular demands. But the palimpsest of an era will prevail in its landscape.

  • The History of Delorean DMC-12
The History of The DeLorean DMC-12 Delorean Introduction The DeLorean DMC-12 is a two-seater sports car that was manufactured by the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) for the US market from 1981 to 1982. It featured gull-wing doors with a fiberglass underbody to which non-structural brushed stainless steel panels were affixed. Manufactured in Northern Ireland it is most commonly known simply as the DeLorean, as it was the only model ever produced by the company. The first prototype appeared in March 1976, and production officially began in 1981 (with the first DMC-12 rolling off the production line on January 21) at the DMC factory in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland. Over nine thousand DMC-12s were made before production stopped in December 1982. Today, about 6,500 DeLorean Motor Cars are believed to still exist. It is perhaps best remembered when it shot to worldwide fame in the Back to the Future movie trilogy starring Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd. The car was transformed into a time machine by the eccentric scientist Doctor Emmett L. Brown - the company had ceased to exist before the first movie was ever made in 1985. DeLorean History In October 1976, the first prototype DeLorean DMC-12 was completed by William T. Collins chief engineer and designer (formerly chief engineer at Pontiac). Originally, the car's rear- mounted power plant was to be a Citroën Wankel rotary engine, but was replaced with a French-designed and produced PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) fuel injected V-6 because of the poor fuel economy from the rotary engine, an important issue at a time of world-wide fuel shortages.
