WELDER/ ASSISTANT (Maintenance Worker)

The Port of Corpus Christi Authority of Nueces County, Texas is currently accepting applications for a Welder/Plumber Assistant. This position under the general supervision of the Maintenance Manager and direct supervision of a Welder/Plumber Technician performs and supports the and plumbing functions of the PCCA and assists other technicians with various maintenance skilled trades in a safe, timely and responsible manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Assists assigned Technician and/or cuts and threads galvanized, black and cast iron pipes using cutters, oxy/acetylene torch or threading machine as directed. 2. Assists assigned Technician and/or cuts and welds plate or pipes to fabricate or make repairs to components using plasma cutter, welders, oxy/acetylene torch, chop saw, grinder and various power as directed. 3. Joins using arc/mig welding or soft solder techniques. 4. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures including sinks, commodes, water heaters, garbage disposals, faucets, drains etc., under direction of assigned Technician. 5. Digs and makes repairs on buried pipes utilizing excavation equipment including but not limited to, back hoes/front loaders, skid steers, jack hammers, water pumps and basic hand tools (shovels, probes, picks) etc., as directed. 6. Assists with inspections of back flow prevention devices and wet and dry fire suppression systems and alarms; performs repairs of same as directed. 7. Assists in performing minor to major plumbing repairs to water supplies, drains and fire hydrants. 8. Follows directions and completes assignments in a safe, timely and responsible manner and assures work area, tools and equipment are cleaned upon completion of assignments. 9. Drives vehicle as necessary to complete assigned duties. Other: 10. Carries out daily assignments and provides feedback of problems or suggestions, adheres to port general, environmental and safety policies, maintains good employee relations, and works towards a safe work environment. 11. Performs other duties as assigned to include: assisting with minor to major dock repairs, basic electrical, , painting or mechanical work, to achieve maximum departmental efficiency. 12. Functions in pre or post-disaster preparedness as an essential employee.

ADDITIONAL PHYSICAL FACTORS: While performing duties employee is regularly required to stand and walk on level and/or inclined surfaces for certain periods throughout the day, reach and handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders; frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally sit, balance, climb stairs, ramps, ladders and work stands.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Exposure to adverse weather conditions, fumes and/or airborne particles, high precarious places and risk of electrical shock. Moderate noise levels and moving mechanical parts are present and work off boats and/or barges.

VEHICLES, EQUIPMENT, TECHNOLOGY USED TO DO THE JOB: Use of motor vehicles, mechanical and electrical equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED equivalent; ability to speak, read and write English; basic math, reading and writing skills; ability to effectively communicate problems and solutions; ability to carry out instructions and conduct assigned work alone or as a team member; proficiency with oxy/acetylene torch, threading machines, various power tools, arc/mig welding and excavation equipment; two years experience in the type of duties outlined above or acceptable equivalent experience.

This position may require unescorted access to Port facilities regulated by 33CFR105. To gain unescorted access to these facilities, this position requires the employee to be ELIGIBLE TO OBTAIN a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) in accordance with 33CFR101.514 (TWIC Requirement). Disqualifying background criteria for TWIC are provided in 49CFR1572. Must possess valid driver’s license and considerable judgment to safety and efficiently operate and maintain equipment.

Salary commensurate with experience, minimum $15.17 per hour, non-exempt.
