More than 30 papers and posters were presented and much fruitful discussion occurred. An enjoyable field trip to the Colorado Rockies took place on Sunday, May 19th, and the weather was excellent. Boris was such a good host that it was difficult to leave, but many participants traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico to attend the annual meetings of the North American Benthological Society. Bill Stark gave us a way to remember this meeting by producing a T-shirt with a unique “Spirit Fly” design. ANNOUNCEMENT 11th International Stonefly Symposium Stan Szczytko has planned and organized an excellent symposium that will be held at the Tree Haven Biological Station, University of Wisconsin in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, USA. The registration cost of $300 includes lodging, meals, field trip and a T- Shirt. This is a real bargain so hopefully many colleagues and friends will come and participate in the symposium August 17-20, 1992. JACOBS E N 1 With 3 figures and 2 tables ABSTRACT: Quantitative samples of chironomid and ceratopogonid midge pupal exuviae were collected along 4 nutrient gradients in Everglades National Park (ENP in order to determine midge community response to nutrient enrichment and identify possible indicators of water quality. Community abundance, species richness, and Shannon-Wiener diversity showed no consistent relationship with nutrient gradients. Eight species were significantly sensitive to sources of enrichment; 7 of these species were also sensitive to nutrient enrichment in Water Conservation Area 2A (WCA-2A) studied in 2001. Seven species were significantly tolerant to, and more abundant with enrichment, but none of these species were significantly tolerant to enrichment in WCA-2A. This discrepancy in tolerant species probably reflects differences in species responses to low gradients in ENP versus the much steeper gradient in WCA-2A. RESUMO: Com o objectivo de determinar a resposta das comunidades de mosquitos ao enriquecimento de nutrientes e identificar eventuais indicadores de qualidade da água, foram colhidas amostras quantitativas de exúvias de pupas de quironomídeos e ceratopogonídeos ao longo de 4 gradientes de nutrientes provenientes de efluentes de canais, no Parque Nacional de Everglades (PNE). A abundância da comunidade, riqueza específica e o índice de diversidade de Shannon-Wiener, não revelaram uma relação consistente com a proximidade relativa aos efluentes dos canais. Oito espécies demonstraram ser significativamente mais sensíveis aos efluentes dos canais; Destas, 7 foram igualmente sensíveis ao enriquecimento de nutrientes na Área de Conservação da Água 2A (ACA-2A) estudada em 2001. -

The method we developed involves: 1) using a suite of regression models to estimate the abundance of each taxon across a gradient of stressor levels, 2) using statistical calibration based on the fitted regression models and maximum likelihood methods to predict the value of the stressor metric based on the abundance of the taxon at each site, 3) selecting taxa in a forward stepwise procedure that conditionally improves the concordance between the observed stressor value and the predicted value the most and a stopping rule for selecting taxa based on a conditional alpha derived from comparison to pseudotaxa data, and 4) comparing the coefficient of concordance for the final IBI to the expected distribution derived from randomly permuted data. -

Thus, they have high potential in establishing reference conditions for river bioassessment and in providing functional information, especially when other macroinvertebrates are poorly represented. However, because of taxo- nomic difficulties and poor knowledge of traits, they are neglected in bioassessment programmes and kept at coarser taxonomic levels, reducing the discrimination power of invertebrate-based diagnostic tools. Here, we compared the efficiency of Chironomidae at the subfamily and genus levels and their biological traits (Eltonian and morphological) in the distinction between permanent (medium altitude and lowland) and temporary Mediterranean streams. We established a priori predictions on the expected Chironomidae trait categories in each stream type, conferring the best adaptations to particular environmental constraints. Genus composition (not subfamily) and respective trait categories differed among the three stream types. Both biological traits identified differences between stream types. Among Eltonian traits, diapause stages seg- regated permanent medium altitude from lowland and temporary stream assemblages, reflecting adaptations to temperature and flow regime variations. -

In 2007 and 2008, populations of Baetis tricaudatus Dodds (Baetidae: Ephemeroptera) were examined to assess spatial and temporal variability in its length- mass relationships, secondary productivity and stoichiometry in the Walker River, California and Nevada. Baetis tricaudatus was most abundant at higher elevations and in woody debris habitats. Its abundance, body mass, and body length were greatest during spring and summer. Body length and mass relationships varied temporally and spatially. Carbon (C):phosphorus (P) ratios were low during summer and autumn, and high during spring and winter. Low C:P raitos during summer and autumn matched spring and winter body and length growth patterns, suggesting that optimal grazing took place during summer and autumn when food quality was high. -
