Taxonomy of Afrotropical Securiops, new genus, and Cloeodes Traver (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) L.M. Jacobus1*, W.P.McCafferty1 & J-L. Gattolliat2 1Department of Entomology, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, 47907 U.S.A. 2Musée cantonal de zoologie, Palais de Rumine, CH-1014 Lausanne, Switzerland Based on the examination of type material, new collections, and associated life-history stages, certain species and generic concepts are revised. We recognize new synonyms for the pantropical genus Cloeodes Traver [= Potamocloeon Gillies, syn. n.; = Maliqua Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, syn. n.] and the following new species synonyms and new combination: C. dentatus (Kimmins), comb. n. [= M. plumosa (Wuillot), syn. n.; = M. abdallahi McCafferty, syn. n.]. First descriptions of male alates are provided for C. portabilis Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty and C. pseudogladius Gattolliat. A species previously placed in the genus Afrobaetodes Demoulin instead belongs to Cloeodes [C. pusillus (Navás), comb. n.]. Securiops, gen. n., is established for the larvae formerly and incorrectly attributed to Potamocloeon, and this genus contains four species, including S. macafertiorum (Lugo-Ortiz), comb. n., the type species. We name three new species: S. mandrare, sp. n., S. megapalpus, sp. n., and S. mutadens, sp. n. Animals with complex life cycles often show large variation in the size and timing of metamorphosis in response to environmental variability. If fecundity increases with body size and large individuals are more vulnerable to predation, then organisms may not be able to optimize simultaneously size and timing of metamorphosis. The goals of this study were to measure and explain large-scale spatial and temporal patterns of phe- notypic variation in size at metamorphosis of the may¯y, Baetis bicaudatus (Baetidae), from habitats with variable levels of predation risk. Within a single high-elevation watershed in western Colorado, USA, from 1994 to 1996 we measured dry masses of mature larvae of the overwintering and summer generations of Baetis at 28 site-years in streams with and without predatory ®sh (trout). We also estimated larval growth rates and development times at 16 site-years. Patterns of spatial variation in may¯y size could not be explained by resource (algae) standing stock, competitor densities, or physical±chemical variables. -
Gill Mobility in the Baetidae (Ephemeroptera): Results of a Short Study in Africa
GILL MOBILITY IN THE BAETIDAE (EPHEMEROPTERA): RESULTS OF A SHORT STUDY IN AFRICA MICHAEL T. GJLLIES Whitfeld, Hamsey, Lewes, Sussex, BN8 STD, England Afroptilum was the only genus of Baetidae observed with mobile gills in African streams. Other members of the Cloeon group of genera from fast-running water, including Dicentroptilum, Rhithrocloeon, Afrobaetodes, Centroptiloides and Platycloeon had rigid gills. No gill movements were observed in any species of Baetis s.l. No structural features of the gills appeard to be correlated with this behaviour. Gill movement is seen as an adaptation by Afroptilum to lower current speeds. Mobility of the gills is thought to be the plesiomorphic state. The method we developed involves: 1) using a suite of regression models to estimate the abundance of each taxon across a gradient of stressor levels, 2) using statistical calibration based on the fitted regression models and maximum likelihood methods to predict the value of the stressor metric based on the abundance of the taxon at each site, 3) selecting taxa in a forward stepwise procedure that conditionally improves the concordance between the observed stressor value and the predicted value the most and a stopping rule for selecting taxa based on a conditional alpha derived from comparison to pseudotaxa data, and 4) comparing the coefficient of concordance for the final IBI to the expected distribution derived from randomly permuted data. -

Aquatic Insects, Vol. 2 (1980), Number4, pp. 217-224. The African Euthyplociidae (Ephemeroptera) (Exeuthyplo~iinae subfam. n.) by M. T. GILLIES ABSTRACT A description is given of the larva of Exeuthyplocia Lestage, which closely resembles that of Afroplocia Lestage. On the basis of larval and adult characters and the apparent burrowing habits of the larvae, a new subfamily, Exeuthyplociinae, is proposed for the two African genera of Euthyplociidae. The Euthyplociidae are a mainly tropical and subtropical family, represented in Africa by the two monotypic genera, Exeuthyplocia Lestage and Afroplocia Lestage. Lestage (1921), in recognising the subfamily Euthyplociinae, never theless placed Exeuthyplocia in the Polymitarcinae on the grounds of greater affinity with the latter group than the former. Demoulin (1952), in a comprehensive review, transferred Exeuthyplocia to the Euthyplociinae, treating this as a subfamily of the Ephoronidae. Dealing with the adults only, he characterised the Euthyplociinae as having the fore wing with small inter calaries or with marginal anastomoses, MA forking distal to or at the same level as RS and the cubital field with numerous sigmoidal veinlets. Edmunds and Traver (1954) endorsed this action by elevating the group to family level. The larvae of the Euthyplociidae have generally been regarded as sprawling forms, related to but separate from the true, burrowing forms such as the Ephemeridae and Polymitarcidae (Edmunds, Allen and Peters, 1963; De moulin, 1970; Edmunds, Jensen and Berner, 1976). However, while this is true for most members of the family of which the larvae are known, it overlooks the fact that in Afroplocia the fore tibia is flattened to an extent that suggests fossorial habits (Barnard, 1940; Edmunds, 1972). -

A checklist of the Brazilian Ephemeroptera fauna with all species, genera and families recorded from the country, including the states for which every species is reported, and the pertinent reference is presented. Comments on the status of knowledge of the Brazilian mayfly fauna are also provided. Up to date, 10 families, 63 genera, and 166 species are recorded. Baetidae and Leptophlebiidae have more than 50% of all records, while the North and Southeastern regions are significantly better studied than the other areas of the country.
