Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada DE-6 (2/88) Abstract Increasing forest management resulting from bark beetle attack in British Columbia's forests has created a need to assess the impact of single species management on local insect biodiversity. In the Fort St James Forest District, in central British Columbia, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) (Fd) grows at the northern limit of its North American range. At the district level the species is rare (representing 1% of timber stands), and in the early 1990's growing populations of the Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsuage Hopkins) threatened the loss of all mature Douglas-fir habitat in the district. -

Fauna of click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) in the interfluve of Rivers Moksha and Sura, Republic of Mordovia, Russia. Biodiversitas 19: 1352-1365. The results of the study of fauna of click beetles in the Republic of Mordovia are presented. By now, 58 species of click beetles have been recorded here. Adrastus pallens is a new record for the republic. As per the literature information, 6 species of click beetles (Agriotes pilosellus, Melanotus crassicollis, Melanotus fusciceps, Liotrichus affinis, Pseudanostirus globicollis, Stenagostus rufus) are known and these indications require confirmation. Two species (Agriotes acuminatus, Limoniscus suturalis) are excluded from the fauna. Taking into account the literary information in the fauna of Mordovia, 64 species of Elateridae are known. Agrypnus murinus, Agriotes lineatus, Agriotes obscurus, Agriotes sputator, Dalopius marginatus, Ampedus balteatus, Ampedus pomorum, Hemicrepidius niger, Athous subfuscus, Prosternon tessellatum, Selatosomus aeneus are among the mass species. A list of the species is presented, which with a high degree of probability can still be found in the republic. -

A number of species listed by him are not expected to occur in present-day Hungary, either because they belong to the fauna of the higher regions of the Carpathian Mountains or because they are species with a more southern distribu- * Corresponding author. -

The goal of the researches was to study the biolgical value of the prevailing forest fragments. An index of the value of the forest fragments was compiled. The index includes the amount and quality and suc- cession of the decaying wood in the sites. The groups studied were Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera and ap- hyllophoraceous fungi. Coleoptera species were were most numerous in Tapionaho, where there were over 200 spedies found of the total number of 282 found in the studies. -
First Records for Eight Click-Beetles (Coleoptera, Elateridae) in Greece

Greece provides a rich fauna of insects. Here eight first records of click-beetles (Elateridae Leach, 1815) from Greece are presented. The eight species are: Anostirus purpureus (Poda, 1761), Ctenicera pectinicornis (Linnaeus, 1758), Ctenicera virens (Schrank, 1781), Denticollis rubens Piller & Mitterpacher, 1783, Ectinus aterrimus (Linnaeus, 1761), Elathous mertliki Platia & Schimmel, 1992, Idolus picipennis (Bach, 1852) and Lacon ladae Mertlik & Dušánek, 2006. The habitus, genital and antennae of Elathous mertliki Platia & Schimmel, so far only reported from the hollow type, are figured. Key words: Distribution, Coleoptera, Elateridae, Greece, Anostirus, Ctenicera, Denticollis, Ectinus, Elathous, Idolus, Lacon Introduction This article contributes eight new records for Greece for beetle species from the family Elateridae. The fauna of this family from Greece was recently (since 2000) discussed by G. Platia and I. Gudenzi (2000a, b; 2001; 2002; 2003), M. Zeising und G. Brunne (2005), J. Mertlik and V. Dušánek (2006), G. Platia and I. Gudenzi (2007), G. Platia (2008), G. Platia and I. Gudenzi (2009) and Platia (2010). The proved species were collected in the course of two excursions in the years 2008 and 2010 and from a private collection. Results Anostirus purpureus (Poda, 1761) Material examined: Greece, Drama region, Western Rodopi, Forest of Paranesti, Fracto, 1083 m a. s. l. (N41.52320° E024.50829°), 07.VI.2010, A.
