Corre]ations between the environment (topography, soil factors, canopy cover) and the proportion of plant species with different geographical distributions were studied in the deep crystalline valley of the Dyjerrhaya river on the Czech-Austrian border. Modified classification of species ranges into range types (Arealtypen) of Meuse] et Jager (1992) was used. It is suggested that there is a correlation between the performance of particular range types and certain types of environments. The main trends in the data are summarized in a model based on the canonical correspondence analysis. Species ranges with similar shape, size, and geographical confinement to some part of the Earth are grouped into range types (Arealtypen, see Wangerin 1932, Meusel 1943, Holub et Jirásek 1967). It is supposed that species belonging to particular range types are characterized by specific environmental requirements and the classification of a species' range into a range type suggests that the species is confined to a specified environment (Meusel et Jager 1992). -

Coles2 1 Department of Biology, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87131, U.S.A. 2 Mollusca Section, Department of Biodiversity, National Museum of Wales, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP, U.K. Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: The Pupillidae form an important component of eastern North American land snail biodiversity, representing approx. 12% of the entire fauna, 25-75% of all species and individuals at regional scales, at least 30% of the species diversity, and 33% of individuals within any given site. In some regions pupillids represent 80-100% of total molluscan diversity within sites, notably in taiga, tundra, and the base-poor pine savannas and pocosins of the southeastern coastal plain. Adequate documentation of North American land snail biodiversity thus requires investigators to effi ciently collect and accurately identify individuals of this group. This paper presents a set of annotated keys to the 65 species in this family known to occur in North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The distinguishing taxonomic features, updated county-scale range maps, and ecological conditions favored by each are presented in hopes of stimulating future research in this important group. Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

The Supreme Discipline of Mountaineering To what heaven would it lead me to climb a mountain that flew? Christoph Ransmayr, “The Flying Mountain” MMM Corones on Kronplatz – between the Gader Valley, Olang and the Puster Valley – is the final act in the Messner Mountain Museum project (which comprises a total of six facilities). On the edge of South Tyrol’s mountain plateau with the most spectacular views, in the unique museum architecture created by Zaha Hadid, I present the crowning of traditional mountaineering. Kronplatz offers views beyond the borders of South Tyrol to all points of the compass: from the Lienz Dolomites in the east to the Ortler in the west, from the Marmolada in the south to the Zillertal Alps in the north. The museum is a mirror of the world of my childhood - the Geislerspitzen, the central buttress of the Heiligkreuzkofel (the most difficult climb in my whole life) and the glaciated granite mountains of the Ahrn Valley. On Kronplatz I present the development of modern mountaineering and 250 years of progress with regard to the equipment. I speak of triumphs and tragedies on the world’s most famous peaks – the Matterhorn, Cerro Torre, K2 – and the depiction of our activity, however contradictory it may seem. As in my other museums, I shed light on alpinism with the help of relics, thoughts, works of art (pictures and sculptures) and by reflecting the outside mountain backcloth in the interior of MMM Corones. As the storyteller of traditional mountaineering, it is not my intention to judge or dramatise but simply to condense human experience of a world that is my world, of the 250-year-old contest between man and the mountain. -

It is based on both original data and published data dating from 1861 to October 2000. Northern Asia is defined as the territories of Siberia, the Russian Far East, Mongolia, northern provinces of China, and both Korea and Japan (Hokkaido only). The catalogue lists 216 valid species belonging to 41 genera. The following data are supplied for each species: a range character- istic, all available records from northern Asia with approximate coordinates (mapped), all misidentifications and doubtful records (not mapped), habitat preferences, references to available biological data, taxonomic notes on species where necessary, references to lists of regional fauna and to catalogues of general importance. 24 species are excluded from the list of the Northern Asian salticids. 5 species names are newly synonymized: Evarcha pseudolaetabunda Peng & Xie, 1994 with E. mongolica Danilov & Logunov, 1994; He- liophanus mongolicus Schenkel, 1953 with H. baicalensis Kulczyñski, 1895; Neon rostra- tus Seo, 1995 with N. minutus ¯abka, 1985; Salticus potanini Schenkel, 1963 with S. -

Na druhé stran však dochází sou asn k jejímu ochuzování v souvislosti s rozvojem lidské spole nosti. Z pohledu ochrany p írody se proto horské ekosystémy adí mezi jedno z nejcenn jších a nejohrožen jších prost edí v globálním m ítku. V rámci p edložené doktorské práce byly studovány vybrané potenciáln významné antropické vlivy na biodiverzitu horských bezlesí Hrubého Jeseníku prost ednictvím modelové bioindika ní skupiny brouk (Coleoptera). V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Studium vlivu lyža ského areálu prokázalo, že p estože jsou sjezdové trat v alpínské zón zájmového území provozovány zp sobem šetrným k vegetaci, tak pr kazn m ní pvodní spole enstva epigeických brouk .
