Medical Ideals in the Sephardic Diaspora: Rodrigo de Castro’s Portrait of the Perfect Physician in early Seventeenth-Century Hamburg JON ARRIZABALAGA Introduction As is well known, there were no formal systems of medical ethics until the end of the eighteenth century. Yet at least from the composition of the Hippocratic Oath, western scholarly debates, particularly among doctors, on the foundations of good medical practice and behaviour produced written works. These works simultaneously reflected and con- tributed to setting customary rules of collective behaviour—medical etiquette—that were reinforced by pressure groups who, while they could not always judge and sentence offenders, sanctioned them with disapproval. Most early modern works on medical etiquette were dominated by the question of what constituted a good medical practitioner, with the emphasis sometimes on the most suitable character of a physician, sometimes on professional behaviour.1 The medical literary genre of the perfect physician appears to have been popular in the early modern Iberian world, and the frequent involvement of converso practitioners in writing about it has often been associated with the peculiarities of their professional posi- tion in the territories under the Spanish monarchy.2 Among the most outstanding examples This article has been prepared within the framework of the research project BHA2002-00512 of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology. Hakham Jacob Sasportas and the Former Conversos
STUDIA ROSENTHALIANA 44 (2012), 149-172 doi: 10.2143/SR.44.0.2189614 Hakham Jacob Sasportas and the Former Conversos MATT GOLDISH AKHAM JACOB SASPORTAS (1610-1698) is best known for his battle H against the followers of the messiah Shabbatai Zvi in 1665-66, but he was an important figure for many other reasons as well. Sasportas was, for example, the only rabbi to serve (or at least live) in all the major centers of the Western Sephardi diaspora: Amsterdam, London, Hamburg, and Livorno. Before he ever arrived in Europe he had a distinguished rabbinic career in North Africa. He left behind important responsa and letters which throw light on a number of historical topics. One of these is the encounter between the traditional rabbinate and the cadre of for- mer conversos who escaped the Iberian Peninsula to create new lives as Jews in Western Europe. Yosef Kaplan has made the exploration of these communities the center of his scholarly endeavors for four decades. He has demonstrated that the communities of Western Sephardim looked like other Sephardic communities but operated very differently under the surface. Sasportas was a thoroughly traditional rabbi who took the respect of the rabbinate and rabbinic tradition with the utmost serious- ness. What happened when such a figure encountered communities of people who had grown up as Christians and subsequently created their own version of a Jewish community as they saw fit? Life Sasportas’s biography is an important key to many aspects of his activi- ties and attitudes. He came from one of the most respected and influen- tial Jewish families in North Africa. -

Borges, ‘Poema de los dones’) A Pioneer of Print ORN IN LISBON OR POSSIBLY IN CÓRDOBA, where his father would B be burned in an auto-da-fé, Joseph ben Abraham Athias (c. 1635-1700) arrived in the safety of Amsterdam at some point in the later 1650’s. Like numerous fellow crypto-Jews and New Christians, Athias openly embraced in the United Provinces the religion his family had practiced in secret in Spain, Portugal, and Brazil. In the course of an adult lifetime spent in the flourishing Dutch Republic, Athias achieved many firsts. Towards a Preliminary Portrait of an Evangelical Missionary to the Jews: The Many Faces of Alexander McCaul (1799-1863) Abstract We live in a time of prolific scholarly output on the history of Jews and Judaism where most inhibitions about what are appropriate subjects for study and what are not have disappeared. This is especially apparent with regard to the study of converts who opted to leave the Jewish faith and community both in the pre-modern and modern eras. Labelled disparagingly in the Jewish tradition as meshumadim (apostates), many earlier Jewish scholars treated them in a negative light or generally ignored them as not properly belonging any longer to the community and its historical legacy. -

KAPLAN Arguments Against the Christian Religion in Amsterdam by Saul Levi Morteira, Spinoza’s Rabbi amsterdam studies in the dutch golden age Arguments against the Christian Religion in Amsterdam Amsterdam Studies in the Dutch Golden Age Founded in 2000 as part of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Amsterdam Centre for the Study of the Golden Age (Amsterdams Centrum voor de Studie van de Gouden Eeuw) aims to promote the history and culture of the Dutch Republic during the ‘long’ seventeenth century (c. 1560-1720). The Centre’s publications provide insight into the lively diversity and continuing relevance of the Dutch Golden Age. Carsten Wilke Introduction: Isaac Orobio, the Sceptic Dogmatiser The present volume on the Jewishphysician and theological controversistIsaacOr- obio de Castro (1617– 1687) has its origin in an international workshop held on Feb- ruary 25,2016 at the Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies in Hamburgonthe occasion of the 400th anniversary of the year of Orobio’sbirth.¹ As areligious author, Orobio cannot be easilycategorised with an intellectual movement,and even less with aparticularphilosophicalschool; he was atypicallyeclectic thinker at an ageinwhich Neo-Scholasticism, the scientificrevolution and sceptic anti-rationalism competed for acceptance and forgedshifting alliances among themselves. YetOrobio is noteworthyfor the extensive use of philosophical arguments in his clandestine po- lemical writings. Expressinghimself in exquisite Spanish rhetoric, he defendedJuda- ism simultaneouslyagainst freethought and Christianity. Discussing Orobio’stwo-front battle in the thematic context of the earlymodern quest for certainty is afascinatingly ambiguous task, since his thoughtalternates be- tween moments of devastatingcritique and of staunchtraditionalism. The Portu- guese physician’smain polemical work, titled Divine Warnings against the Vain Idola- tryofthe Gentiles,became famous duringthe Enlightenmentperiod as an arsenal of anti-Christian arguments that served to subvert religious dogma of anysort.Voltaire found this Jewishscholar “profound, yetnever obscure, aman of refined literary taste, of apleasant wit and impeccable manners.”² Recent research on Orobio’seight- eenth-century reception³ has endowedthe author with newfound relevance to the history of philosophythat transcends the Jewish-Christian encounter.Heappears in this period as not onlyanopponentofChristianity,but also an enduringsource of European anti-religious criticism. In this way, he became an involuntary antago- nist of the religious worldview thatheshared with his adversaries.
