  • The Beauty of Mass Effect 2 Ending
The Beauty of Mass Effect 2 Ending Mikhail Aristov∗ December 24, 2016 Abstract This paper analyzes the narrative design in the endgame sequence of the 2010 action role- playing video game Mass Effect 2. Its final levels, collectively titled as \the Suicide Mission", are modeled as a puzzle with multiple solutions, whose availability depends on the number and type of resources the player had previously obtained throughout the main game. The paper examines how the designers incorporate narrative flavor into their puzzle design while translating ludic developments into a cohesive narrative experience that feels compellingly interactive despite its technical linearity. Finally, it suggests a set of recommendations for using the design patterns pioneered by Mass Effect 2 to improve future interactive narratives. 1 Introduction The Mass Effect series of role-playing video games is produced by the Canadian video game developer BioWare. The first three games, comprising what the fans refer to as the \Mass Effect original trilogy" or the \Shepard trilogy" (after its customizable protagonist), were released between 2007 and 2012 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U platforms. Spanning almost the entire seventh generation of video game consoles, the trilogy had become one of the hallmarks of science fiction video gaming, and its evolution over the years had both influenced and been influenced by the development of the 3D action RPG genre as a whole. The second game of the trilogy, Mass Effect 2 was released on January 26, 2010 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 in North America and marked a major departure from the gameplay conventions of the original game, which were largely informed by BioWare's own Knights of the Old Republic (2003) and, through it, by Wizards of the Coast's pen-and-paper Star Wars Roleplaying Game (2000) and their third edition of Dungeons & Dragons (2000).

The follow websites are authorized to use this guide: www.noobfeed.com Use of this guide on any other website or as part of any public display is strictly prohibited and a violation of copyright. Lets start!! As I finished Mass Effect 2 on Insanity and I basically remember some of the tactics that I used during the game, I thought why not I share it to you all, since I know most of you have played Mass Effect 2 and some of you want to play on insanity. I have not written any walkthroughs before so I don’t know how I am going to write so let’s see. SPOILER WARNING: This article is only for those who already finished Mass Effect 2 once. Introduction Mass Effect 2 is an Action RPG game centering on the character Sheppard with a sci-fi setting. The story is set where the Mass Effect 1 left off. If you played Mass Effect 1, you can import your character to Mass Effect 2 and there will be slight changes in the storyline based on how you progressed in the first Mass Effect. In order to play insanity mode, I would rather advise you all to play Mass Effect 2 in normal or easier difficulty mode.

  • Mass Effect! Action! Drama! War! Romance!
Story: In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time. They called it the greatest discovery in human history. The civilizations of the galaxy call it... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro: Element Zero! You're going to be hearing that term (or eezo) a lot from now on. It'll be used to justify faster-than-light travel, energy shields, even glowy space psychic people. Why? Because you get to spend the next 10 years in the sci-fi adventure setting of Mass Effect! Action! Drama! War! Romance! You will begin your adventure in the year 2181. For the record, the first Mass Effect takes place in 2183, Mass Effect 2 takes place in 2185, and Mass Effect 3 kicks off in 2186. You get a few years to get yourself ready for the impending Reaper (sentient starship) invasion. You might even be able to stop it yourself. Remember, you probably know information (or can learn it by just reading the Jump) that could save a lot of lives if you can get people to believe you. Cerberus' (human supremacist organization headed by the Illusive Man) antics, the Collectors, all of that information could be resolved with less fuss if you can get the word out to the right people. You'll have to survive though. Good luck with that! Go join up with Shepard, take things into your own hands, or use your information to change the galaxy.

  • Women in STEM on a Spaceship
Women in STEM on a Spaceship Ursula Whitcher I don’t expect to find role models in video games. There’s a difference in goals, of course: I don’t want to develop my skill with guns, swords, or jumping long distances, and I’m not planning to wreak revenge on anyone. I don’t even want to start a small package-delivery business, which is a standard task in the genre of games I favor. But there’s a more obvious, less pragmatic, reason I don’t expect to see myself in video games: I’m a woman. As a female gamer, I belong to a demographic occasionally mocked and often dismissed entirely. Though women constitute just under half of all gamers (48%, according to the latest industry statistics), female characters are rare and female protagonists even rarer. Recently, for example, the game company Ubisoft announced that there would be no playable female characters in the new Assassin’s Creed game because “the reality of production” made animating women too expensive. As a mathematician, I’ve grown accustomed to real-world contexts where women are rare. In recent years, women have received just over 30% of the Ph.D.s granted in mathematics. Sometimes even 30% seems high: when I go to research workshops in my subfield, I'm often the only junior woman in the room, and occasionally the only woman. That might be because my field overlaps with theoretical physics, and compared to other STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), math is doing pretty well. Fewer than 20% of new physics and computer science PhDs go to women; the statistics for engineering are similar.

  • Studying the Mass Effect Universe of Twitter
Transforming Game Narrative through Social Media: Studying the Mass Effect Universe of Twitter William Ryan Ithaca College 953 Danby Road Ithaca, NY 14850 607-274-3642 [email protected] Zach Gilson Ithaca College 953 Danby Road Ithaca, NY 14850 [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper explores the world of social media as a tool for interactive narrative in video games. From the perspective of fan fiction, this paper looks at ways games can be transformed through Twitter as a narrative tool. We perform a textual analysis on selected characters’ Twitter accounts drawn from the Mass Effect series. We show a number of findings having to do with how authors balance their character’s identities, Twitter as a narrative tool despite its unique constraints, the mutability of narrative time in this medium, and the ways authors create and navigate impossible situations created because of the conflict between their authorial intent and what occurs in the games. We argue this participatory and interactive form of narrative is a factor game designers must acknowledge and understand as social media continues to evolve and the boundary between consumer and producer deteriorates. Keywords Interactive narrative, social media, Twitter, video games, fan fiction, transmedia INTRODUCTION Game designers have strived for ways to make their stories more interactive. Nonetheless, it has remained an elusive dream to many as the combinatorial explosion of managing myriad branching story threads limits the extent to which this feature can be utilized. Reiner (2013) explained how games, such as the Walking Dead (Telltale Games 2012), Mass Effect 3 (Bioware 2012), Assassain’s Creed 3 (Ubisoft Montreal 2012) and Skyrim (Bethesda Game Studios 2011), have evolved from replicated cinematographic techniques to creating stories increasingly influenced by players decisions.

In a media landscape that is still navigating marginalized representation in a meaningful way, BioWare has made strides in terms of their depth and quality of queer inclusion since its release. The ways that this inclusion is constructed in all levels of design – from formal game qualities to its storytelling choices – can tell researchers much about how discourses of queerness function, using the game space as a site of discursive operations.

SHALL WE PLAY A GAME?: THE PERFORMATIVE INTERACTIVITY OF VIDEO GAMES Michael J. Beck Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2014 APPROVED: John M. Allison, Jr., Major Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies Justin T. Trudeau, Committee Member Shaun Treat, Committee Member Holley Vaughn, Committee Member Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Beck, Michael J. Shall We Play a Game? The Performative Interactivity of Video Games. Master of Science (Communication Studies), August 2014, 113 pp., bibliography, 61 titles. This study examines the ways that videogames and live performance are informed by play theory. Utilizing performance studies methodologies, specifically personal narrative and autoperformance, the project explores the embodied ways that gamers know and understand videogames. A staged performance, “Shall We Play a Game?,” was crafted using Brechtian theatre techniques and Conquergood’s three A’s of performance, and served as the basis for the examination. This project seeks to dispel popular misconceptions about videogames and performance and to expand understanding about videogaming as an embodied performative practice and a way of knowing that has practical implications for everyday life.
