GIANT MAGELLAN TELESCOPE Board of Directors and Executive Team Biographies GMTO BOARD OF DIRECTORS Walter Massey (Chair) CHICAGO, IL Dr. Massey is Chancellor of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Dr. Massey was formerly the Director and Vice President of Research of Argonne National Laboratory. From 1991 to 1993, he served as Director of the National Science Foundation before joining the University of California system as Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. In 1995 he became President of Morehouse College. In the corporate sector, he is former Chairman of Bank of America and serves on the Board of Directors of the McDonald’s Corporation. He has also served on the boards of the Mellon Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Commonwealth Fund, Smithsonian Institution, and others. He has been recognized with honorary degrees from 39 universities, including Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and Brown.

Charles Alcock CAMBRIDGE, MA Dr. Alcock is the Director of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and Professor of Astronomy at . He was a long-term member of the Institute for Advanced Study, an Associate Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He assumed his position as Director of CfA in 2004 and served as Acting Undersecretary for Science for the Smithsonian from 2008 to 2009. Dr. Alcock received the Department of Energy’s Ernest O. Lawrence Award for Physics and the Beatrice M. Tinsley Award of the American Astronomical Society for his leadership of the search for massive compact halo objects. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Wayne Alexander SAN ANTONIO, TX Mr. Alexander was President of SBC (now AT&T) from 1999 to 2002. During his 32-year career at SBC, he held a variety of executive positions in network operations, sales, marketing and governmental affairs, and international operations. Prior to his term as President, Mr. Alexander led SBC operations in and the Asia Pacific region. He was VP of sales for Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages, directing network and marketing for Southwestern Bell Texas. Mr. Alexander now serves on a number of boards including Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio Medical Foundation, LiftFund, Port Authority of San Antonio, UT Austin McDonald and Department of Astronomy Board of Visitors, and Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Taft Armandroff (Vice-Chair) AUSTIN, TX Dr. Armandroff is the McDonald Observatory Director, a Professor, and Frank and Susan Bash Endowed Chair at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining UT Austin, Dr. Armandroff was Observatory Director at the W.M. Keck Observatory. He worked for 19 years at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) in Tucson, AZ, where he became Associate Director of NOAO and Director of the NOAO Gemini office. Dr. Armandroff’s research focuses on dwarf spheroidal , stellar populations in our and nearby galaxies, globular clusters, and astronomical instrumentation. He has served as an advisor or Board member for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, the Management Board at the University of , the Observatory Council for the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, the Mathematical and Physical Science Advisory Committee for the National Science Foundation, and the External Advisory Panel for the .

Timothy Doyle WASHINGTON, DC Mr. Doyle serves as Chief Operating Officer for the Carnegie Institution for Science, where he is responsible for Carnegie’s administrative operations, including finance and investment operations, HR, IT, and facilities planning. Mr. Doyle served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and as Operations Manager for Rand McNally. Mr. Doyle served as a Financial Operations Vice President for Fidelity Investments and led a staff of over 100 supporting their $500 million outsourced payroll and benefits administration. His interest in higher education led to his selection as the Chief Operating Officer for Harvard University Press, where he spearheaded numerous financial, technical, and publishing initiatives. He has served as the Associate Dean for Finance at Harvard’s John A. Paulsen School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he assisted in the planning for a SEAS $450M campaign and a new 600,000 square foot academic and research facility.

Daniel Eisenstein CAMBRIDGE, MA Dr. Eisenstein is a professor of astronomy at Harvard University. He studies cosmology and extragalactic astronomy using theoretical and observational methods. He was on the astronomy faculty for 9 years before moving to Harvard in 2010. He has been active in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and has been the Director of SDSS-III, a collaboration working to map the Milky Way, search for extrasolar planets, and solve the mystery of dark energy, since 2007. He is the co- Spokesperson of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument collaboration. In 2012, he served as chair of the National Science Foundation Astronomy Portfolio Review committee. In 2014, he received the Shaw Prize in Astronomy and was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

Buell Jannuzi TUCSON, AZ Dr. Jannuzi heads the Department of Astronomy at the University of Arizona and is the Director of the , which includes the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab. He joined the University of Arizona after 17 years at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), during which time he served as Director of Kitt Peak National Observatory and Associate Director at NOAO. He serves as an advisor or Board Member for the Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee of the NSF, the American Astronomical Society Committee on Astronomy and Public Policy, the AAS Council, and the LSSTC Executive Board of Directors, and was a member of the Thirty Meter Telescope Science Advisory Committee and the International Dark Sky Association Board of Directors. Dr. Jannuzi’s research interests include observational cosmology, absorption line systems, active galaxies, and instrumentation for surveys.

Anne-Marie Lansdown CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA Ms. Lansdown is the Chief of Staff to the Chief Scientist of Australia. She was previously the Deputy CEO of Universities Australia, the top advocacy body for Australia’s universities. She served in the Senior Executive Service of the Australian Government’s Industry Department for 15 years. Internationally, she engaged with a range of multilateral organizations including the UN, The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. She contributed to the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy, Australia’s international science agreements, the Education Investment Fund, and Australia’s first National Broadband Strategy. In 2008 and 2011, she managed the national roadmap processes, which included the approval by the Australian government and the Education Investment Fund Board of a package that became the $1.1B Super Science research infrastructure package.

Cláudia Mendes de Oliveira SÃO PAULO, Dr. Mendes de Oliveira received her PhD degree from the University of British Columbia, , and is currently Full Professor of Astronomy at the University of São Paulo. Her research focuses on the properties of galaxies in groups, particularly kinematics and metal distribution. She has been dedicated to working on astronomical instrumentation for the Brazilian community, having developed a Fabry-Perot spectrograph for the SOAR telescope; she is also one of the Brazilian coordinators of the J-PAS project to build and operate a 2.5 meter telescope in Spain for cosmological studies. She has coordinated the installation of a wide-field 0.80 m robotic telescope on CTIO for various kinds of surveys. For a decade, she was the coordinator of Astronomy and Space Science at FAPESP, the São Paulo Science Foundation. Currently Dr. Mendes de Oliveira coordinates Brazilian participation in the GMT instruments GMACS and G-CLEF.

Richard Meserve FALLS CHURCH, VA Dr. Meserve is a Senior Legal Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP. With a Ph.D. in applied physics, Dr. Meserve specializes in issues at the intersections of law, regulation, science, and technology. He served as President of the Carnegie Institution of Washington and is a member of Carnegie's Board of Trustees. He served as Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission under Presidents Clinton and Bush. Dr. Meserve is currently Chairman of the International Nuclear Safety Group. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society and the National Academy of Engineering, and he is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Physical Society. Prior to joining Covington & Burling, Dr. Meserve served as legal counsel to President Carter's science and technology advisor.

Byeong-Gon Park DAEJEON, KOREA Dr. Park is the Director of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) Center for Large Telescopes and is Professor and Principal Researcher at KASI. He was previously the Director of the Optical/ Astronomy Division and serves as a Board Member for the Korean Astronomical Society. His areas of expertise include star formation in young open clusters in our galaxy, extra-solar planet studies based on gravitational microlensing, and the development of CCD cameras for ground-based optical telescopes. He led the construction of the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet), which consists of three widefield 1.6m telescopes distributed in Chile, South Africa, and Australia and supported the exploration of the structure and diversity of planetary systems and variable objects, including very low-mass exoplanets.

Nigel Poole SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA Mr. Poole is the General Manager of the University of New South Wales Business School. He has served as a senior advisor and senior executive in the UK and Australia, focused on commercial, strategy, and governance issues. He headed commercial and governance areas for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency, and took board roles on subsidiary and associated companies. He recently headed the negotiation team for the Australian government, establishing hosting agreements for the Square Kilometre Array telescopes. He served on the board of AARNet, Australia’s academic and research network, and was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company. Mr. Poole licensed CSIRO’s wireless local area network intellectual property to major corporations, helping CSIRO to achieve significant royalties. He serves on the advisory council of the Science and Industry Endowment Fund.

Jerry Strawser COLLEGE STATION, TX Dr. Strawser holds the KPMG Chair in Accounting and serves as Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer of Texas A&M University. He served as Dean of the Mays Business School and interim Executive Vice President and Provost. During his tenure as Dean, he helped raise over $149 million in commitments for faculty, student, and program support. Dr. Strawser served as interim Dean of the C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston and was a Professor of Accounting. He has served on the faculty at Louisiana State University and had prior public accounting experience at two international accounting firms. He has also developed and delivered numerous executive development programs to organizations such as AT&T, Chinese Petroleum, Continental Airlines, ConocoPhillips, Minute Maid, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Shell.

James Wyant TUCSON, AZ Dr. Wyant is Professor Emeritus of Optical Sciences and of Electrical and Computer Engineering and was the Founding Dean of the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. Recognized as a leading expert in the fields of interference, diffraction, and optical testing, he holds ten patents and founded or co-founded multiple companies including Wyant Measurement Systems, WYKO Corporation, DMetrix, and 4D Technology. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of Rochester and Case Western Reserve University, and he is Board Chairman of 4D Technology Corporation. He has served on Boards for ILX Lightwave, DMetrix, Optics 1, Veeco Instruments, and WYKO Corporation. Dr. Wyant received the Arizona “Innovator of the Year” Product Award, the NASA Goddard Achievement in Excellence Award, and the SPIE Gold Medal, the highest award given by the international society for optics and photonics.

He is responsible for the overall leadership of the project, with a focus on resource development and fundraising. He works closely with the Board of Directors and the Founding institutions to lead the project to success. Dr. Shelton is a renowned scientific and administrative leader, having previously been the President of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, the President of the University of Arizona, the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of UNC-Chapel Hill, and Vice Provost for Research for the University of California system. He was also the Executive Director of the Arizona Sports Foundation (Fiesta Bowl). Dr. Shelton has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, San Diego, and has authored over 240 refereed publications and given over 50 invited talks. Dr. Shelton serves on the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) Board.

Patrick McCarthy VICE PRESIDENT FOR OPERATIONS AND EXTERNAL RELATIONS Dr. McCarthy is a research astronomer who has served the Giant Magellan Telescope Project since 2005, helping to define and articulate its scientific mission. As Director, he led the Project Team through the Design Development Phase, culminating in a successful System Level Preliminary Design Review and an independent Cost and Organizational Review, both in 2014. Dr. McCarthy’s scientific research is focused on the evolution of galaxies in the first few billion years after the Big Bang. He has two decades of experience in management and oversight of large scientific organizations and projects. He has been involved the development of instruments for the and has led the peer review process for the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. Dr. McCarthy has advised the National Science Foundation on the budgets and operations of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory. In his current role at GMTO, Dr. McCarthy communicates the scientific potential of the GMTO while managing much of the day to day operations. He received his doctorate in Astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley and has authored more than 200 refereed publications on topics as diverse as the physics of comets in our to the most distant galaxies in the Universe.

James Fanson PROJECT MANAGER Dr. Fanson is the GMT Project Manager. He is responsible for overall technical and program management of the project. He leads the staff of engineers, scientists, and schedule and cost analysts responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of the observatory. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics from Caltech and spent 30 years at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), where he developed a number of space-based telescopes. Dr. Fanson played leading roles in many of NASA’s most successful astrophysics programs, particularly the Kepler exoplanet mission, the infrared Spitzer Space Telescope, and the ultraviolet Galaxy Explorer (GALEX). He was a key member of the team that built Wide-Field Planetary Camera 2, the instrument that restored Hubble’s vision. Dr. Fanson has served on the Board of Directors for AURA (Associated Universities for Research in Astronomy) and the Council.

Rebecca Bernstein PROJECT SCIENTIST Dr. Bernstein is the Project Scientist for GMTO and plays a leading role in ensuring that the observatory and its instruments will enable scientists at the Founder institutions to meet the project’s scientific goals. She interfaces with the technical and scientific community and represents the project at scientific conferences around the world. She is an accomplished optical designer and builder of scientific instruments, having designed and built a high-resolution spectrograph for Magellan and carried out the optical design for several others. She held professorships at the University of Michigan and at the University of California, Santa Cruz before coming to GMTO. While at the University of California she led the design of a spectrograph for the Thirty Meter Telescope. She is a Staff Astronomer at the of the Carnegie Institution.

Jennifer Eccles VICE PRESIDENT FOR DEVELOPMENT Ms. Eccles is the Vice President for Development at GMTO and is responsible for partnering with the President to execute major gift fundraising and a development strategy in support of GMTO. For ten years, she was with the University of Southern California as the Chief Development Officer for the USC Libraries and at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy as the Executive Director of Development. In both positions, she partnered with major gift donors to align their philanthropic goals with academic priorities. Prior to joining the University of Southern California, Ms. Eccles worked at University of Washington’s School of Pharmacy as the Assistant Director of Development and at Wesley Homes Foundation in Des Moines where she served as the Annual Fund and Planned Giving Manager. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Communication with an academic minor in Political Science from the University of Idaho and will complete a masters degree in Executive Leadership from the USC Price School in 2018.

Alan Gordon CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER Mr. Gordon is Chief Financial Officer for GMTO. He leads the financial operations of GMTO and works closely with the Executive Team and Finance Committee to set financial policy and strategic plans. He was Chief Financial Officer at Transcu Group Limited, Segment Financial Officer at SunGard Data Systems, Inc., and Finance Director for Avery Dennison Corporation. He is experienced in U.S. GAAP and IFRS accounting; management and statutory reporting; budgeting, forecasting, planning, and analysis. Mr. Gordon has worked in international finance across Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Sara Lee Keller GENERAL COUNSEL Ms. Keller is General Counsel for GMTO, responsible for oversight of all legal and compliance issues for the company, including corporate governance, regulatory compliance, legal agreements, contract review and compliance, and vendor relationships. She was Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Clear Channel Outdoor; Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary for Trustmark Companies; and was Associate General Counsel for General Electric. She has been recognized by the Association of Corporation Counsel and First Chair. She is a certified Project Manager and is Six Sigma Green Belt certified.

Miguel Roth LEGAL REPRESENTATIVE IN CHILE Dr. Roth is the GMTO Legal Representative in Chile, responsible for all activities of the organization in Chile. He works closely with the Chilean government agencies on legal matters relating to the observatory, including dark sky protection and land use issues, and works with local communities on education and outreach. Dr. Roth is GMTO’s principal point of contact with Chilean Universities and the local astronomical community. He has led operations for two international observatories, serving as Director of the National Astronomical Observatory in Mexico from 1981 to 1987 and Director of Carnegie’s in Chile from 1990 to 2014. He has participated in multiple advisory committees and peer review panels relevant to Chilean and international astronomy.
