ABSTRACT The learning organization (LO) is a misunderstood concept. The related literature reveals a fractured knowledge domain racked by definitional diversity, a lack of cumulative work, and polarized camps of scholars who clash over the topic’s core theoretical assumptions. Consequently, the LO idea is often speciously downgraded in its importance as an atheoretical concept, a management fad, a form of hegemonic programming, idealistically naïve, and/or otherwise untenable in reality. These perceived problems are the genesis of this study, which develops a metatheoretical framework sufficiently plastic to: (1) determine the theoretical lineage of the LO construct; (2) analyze and understand more fully the current state of LO theory and practice; (3) “test” the veracity of the aforesaid criticisms; and (4) explore the LO’s potential for implementation in organizations. In effect, this dissertation seeks to “relearn” the LO, a response to the proposal by many scholars within the social sciences that “a process of unlearning” the LO take place due to its flawed assumptions about organizations and worklife. Contrary to this emerging perspective, this project embraces a different thesis, one that derives from a belief that a given construct is only as robust as the ideas that inform it, and a hunch that the LO paradigm has an evolutionary aspect to it that echoes the sum development of organization theory. The starting point for this study is Peter Senge’s conception of the LO, which is recast in this work as an ornate cloth made from manifold threads of theories and thoughts about organizations. Then, by reweaving extant strands of knowledge with new yarns of insight, a fresh understanding of the LO and the inherent difficulties of operationalizing its meaning is made possible. This dissertation is strictly an abstract work. It makes its chief contribution by presenting a new way to understand the notion of the LO via its theoretically grounded processes of concurrent deconstruction and re-invention. As a result we provide an illustration of systems intelligence field as a network of key persons. The main conclusion is that the most promising area for systems intelligence as social system is to systematically apply positive psychology to develop organizational management and to solve our everyday problems. Introduction The social system of systems intelligence is an ambitious topic, particularly for a person without any formal studies in sociology. Moreover, systems intelligence is a novel area of science and, hence, the development of its social structures is in early phase. It is even possible to argue that there is not yet any social system of systems intelligence. The approach of this study is based on four cornerstones: first, the literature that has used concept of systems intelligence, second, search engines, third, models to describe the behavior of social phenomena, and forth, a theory of social systems. As a result we may be able to say something novel about the development of systems intelligence as a social system. As to the social systems this essay relies on the grand theory developed by Niklas Luhmann (Luhmann 1995).

As a case study of reaffirmation processes for four 4-year institutions and their accreditor, WSCUC, it looked for evidence of organizational learning in the related higher education systems of institutions and regional accrediting agencies. It used written documents as evidence of the extended discourse that is the reaffirmation of accreditation process. The documents were analyzed from a set of three perspectives in an effort to build a fuller understanding of the organizations. A structural analysis perspective looked for structural qualities within the discourse and its elements. A categorical analysis perspective considered the evidence of organizational learning that could be found by reviewing the set of documents produced by both WSCUC and the institution as part of the reaffirmation process. The review applied categorical frames adapted from the core strategies identified in Kezar and Eckel (2002b), the five disciplines proposed by Senge (2006), and the six activities identified in Dill (1999). It looked for relationships and interdependencies developed in the content within and between documents.

Research shows that these concepts are highly counterintuitive and poorly understood. It also shows how they can be taught and learned. Doing so requires the use of formal models and simulations to test our mental models and develop our intuition about complex systems. Yet, though essential, these concepts and tools are not sufficient. Becoming an effective systems thinker also requires the rigorous and disciplined use of scientific inquiry skills so that we can uncover our hidden assumptions and biases. It requires respect and empathy for others and other viewpoints. Most important, and most difficult to learn, systems thinking requires understanding that all models are wrong and humility about the limitations of our knowledge. Such humility is essential in creating an environment in which we can learn about the complex systems in which we are embedded and work effectively to create the world we truly desire.
