It was on that morning, in a converted de Havilland DH4 bomber, that a Captain Powered flight had been possible since the beginning of the twentieth Bill Lawford took off for Paris. Material Cultures of Childhood in Second World War Britain How do children cope when their world is transformed by war? This book draws on memory narratives to construct an historical anthropology of childhood in Second World Britain, focusing on objects and spaces such as gas masks, air raid shelters and bombed-out buildings. In their struggles to cope with the fears and upheavals of wartime, with families divided and familiar landscapes lost or transformed, children reimagined and reshaped these material traces of conflict into toys, treasures and playgrounds. This study of the material worlds of wartime childhood offers a unique viewpoint into an extraordinary period in history with powerful resonances across global conflicts into the present day. While many conflicts in history have produced dramatic shifts in human behaviour, the industrialized nature of modern war possesses a material and psychological intensity that embodies the extremes of our behaviours, from the total economic mobiliza- tion of a nation state to the unbearable pain of individual loss. Fundamen- tally, war is the transformation of matter through the agency of destruction, and the character of modern technological warfare is such that it simulta- neously creates and destroys more than any previous kind of conflict. The material culture of modern wars can be small (a bullet, machine-gun or gas mask), intermediate (a tank, aeroplane, or war memorial), and large (a battleship, a museum, or an entire contested landscape). -

Two squadrons of hostile bombers approach London, preparing to unload their deadly cargo on the great metropolis. Fortunately, they are intercepted by two British fighter squadrons, which manage to destroy or turn back the enemy aircraft, albeit at terrible cost to themselves. Shortly afterwards, in a far-flung corner of empire, the European residents of a small village come under attack from their indigenous neighbours. Their distress signals are seen by a British aerial patrol, which radios for assistance. As the colonists withdraw under fire across a bridge, a friendly bomber squadron arrives and targets the hostile insurgents. Three large transport aircraft land nearby and take the white refugees to safety, as the village burns furiously. These battles never happened. Or, rather, they only happened as entertainment, as the spectacular climax to a highly-choreographed and heavily-publicised performance of British airpower: the Royal Air Force (RAF) 1 Display, held annually at Hendon aerodrome in north London between 1920 and 1937, to shape the public image of Britain’s newest arm of defence.1 One day every summer (weather permitting) dozens of military aircraft soared and dived over Hendon, looped and tumbled, flew in formation and fought in mock battles, before huge, enraptured crowds. -

By kind permission of his daughter, Mrs Pamela Mainwaring Arnold Watson - Transcribed Diaries [2013.101.1] SUMMARY Capt. Watson joined the Air Transport Auxiliary in June 1940 having sought permission from his then employer Lord Wakefield (Castrol Oil). Although he held a pilot’s licence at the time, he had fewer than the minimum hours for acceptance but was accepted after a flight test. His entire time with the ATA was spent at the Headquarters at White Waltham. Initially he was ferrying, but his skills were recognised and he was later promoted to Airborne Navigation Instructor where, mainly on Oxfords & Ansons, he passed out upwards of 80 pupils, plus a few that he didn’t! However, the most important aspect of his ATA career was to come when he was asked to take over the role of Flying Technical Officer where he was responsibile for flight testing any new aircraft which the ATA were going to be asked to ferry and to provide technical information regarding the flying characteristics which would be set out in Ferry Pilots’ Notes. This involved testing the low speed characteristics of each aircraft in a wide range of weather conditions and all aspects of engine and propeller settings. From time to time, this gave cause for alarm as at times the manufacturer’s own test pilots had not tested some of these aspects. There is no doubt that Watson’s work resulted in the greater safety of many pilots. -

It doesn’t seem more than 5 minutes since I was finalising the December issue, and here we are again! 2012 is a VERY big year in the UK with HM The Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations up and down the country, indeed perhaps the globe, oh and that little sporting event being hosted in London. The latter will inevitably take its toll on my daily commute to & from work, so I am not as keen as some! This year will also see a good many friends and colleagues being awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee medal, so for all who meet the qualification, please accept our most sincere albeit early congratulations. Military tailors and medal mounters all over the land are already contemplating how much work the Jubilee will involve, so here’s looking forward to all those pictures. For those of you who haven’t yet visited our new web site, please do so as it is continuously being developed and added to, but as I am always saying this is YOUR Association, YOUR Newsletter and now YOUR web site – so please, I need you to tell me if it’s right, wrong or if you want to see something different. This year too, I would like offer an alternative newsletter medium for those interested. -
