Aerodrome Road borders the site to the north, while Elvington Lane forms the eastern boundary. Areas of open ground border to the south and west. The boundary comprises areas of open ground and the foundations of previously demolished structures. The site is approximately centred on the OS grid reference: TR 2044639485. Proposed Works The proposed works are understood to involve the excavation of trial pits to a depth of up to 3m. Boreholes will also be drilled to a depth of 4m-6m below ground level depending on ground conditions. Geology and Bomb Penetration Depth The British Geological Survey (BGS) map shows the bedrock geology of the site to be underlain by the Pit Chalk Formation – chalk and sedimentary bedrock of the Cretaceous Period. The superficial deposits are comprised of Clay-with-flints Formation - clay, silt, sand and gravel of the Quaternary Period. Site specific geotechnical information was not available to 1st Line Defence at the time of the production of this report. An assessment of maximum bomb penetration depth can be made once such data becomes available, or by a UXO specialist during on-site support. -

BECKENHAM COPERS COPE & KANGLEY BRIDGE Character The introduction of the railway in mid-Victorian times saw Beckenham develop from a small village into a town on the edge of suburbia. The majority of dwellings in the area are Victorian with some 1940’s and 50’s flats and houses. On the whole houses tend to have fair sized gardens; however, where there are smaller dwellings and flatted developments there is a lack of available off-street parking. During the later part of the 20th century a significant number of Victorian villas were converted or replaced by modern blocks of flats or housing. Ten conservation areas have been established to help preserve and enhance the appearance of the area reflecting the historic character of the area. -

The site is surrounded in all directions by agricultural fields and residential properties and small vegetated areas. The proposed site is an irregular shaped parcel of land. Half of the site consists of several small structures associated with the builders’ yard and large piles of building materials. The other half of the site appears to be an area of open land. The site is centred on the approximate OS grid reference: SP 2855285310 Proposed Works The proposed works include further investigations to assess the level of contamination on the site and the removal of all building materials and hard-standings. The entirety of the site will then be remediated and returned to pastoral/arable land or residential development. Geology and Bomb Penetration Depth Site specific geological data / borehole information is not available at the site at the time of writing this report so maximum bomb penetration depth cannot be calculated. -

THE BLITZ AND ITS LEGACY 3 – 4 SEPTEMBER 2010 PORTLAND HALL, LITTLE TITCHFIELD STREET, LONDON W1W 7UW ABSTRACTS Conference organised by Dr Mark Clapson, University of Westminster Professor Peter Larkham, Birmingham City University (Re)planning the Metropolis: Process and Product in the Post-War London David Adams and Peter J Larkham Birmingham City University [email protected] [email protected] London, by far the UK’s largest city, was both its worst-damaged city during the Second World War and also was clearly suffering from significant pre-war social, economic and physical problems. As in many places, the wartime damage was seized upon as the opportunity to replan, sometimes radically, at all scales from the City core to the county and region. The hierarchy of plans thus produced, especially those by Abercrombie, is often celebrated as ‘models’, cited as being highly influential in shaping post-war planning thought and practice, and innovative. But much critical attention has also focused on the proposed physical product, especially the seductively-illustrated but flawed beaux-arts street layouts of the Royal Academy plans. Reconstruction-era replanning has been the focus of much attention over the past two decades, and it is appropriate now to re-consider the London experience in the light of our more detailed knowledge of processes and plans elsewhere in the UK. This paper therefore evaluates the London plan hierarchy in terms of process, using new biographical work on some of the authors together with archival research; product, examining exactly what was proposed, and the extent to which the different plans and different levels in the spatial planning hierarchy were integrated; and impact, particularly in terms of how concepts developed (or perhaps more accurately promoted) in the London plans influenced subsequent plans and planning in the UK. -

Chislehurst Conservation Area
CHISLEHURST CONSERVATION AREA A Study compiled and written for The Chislehurst Society By Mary S Holt August 1992 (updated February 2008) Chislehurst Conservation Area Study Editors note Mary Holt’s 1992 study of the Chislehurst Conservation Area is full of interest at a number of different levels. Not only did she describe the then current features of all the roads in the Conservation Area, she added historical information, which helps make sense of the position at the time she was writing. She also noted the practical issues faced by residents and others going about their business in these areas. Finally, she noted the then understood Conservation Area Objectives. The original study was completed in 1992, and we felt we should bring it up to date in 2008. In doing so, however, we have identified only significant changes which we believe Mary would have wanted to reflect had she been editing the original study now. In fact there are relatively few such changes given the size of the conservation area. These changes are identified in square brackets, so that readers are able to read the original study, and see what changes have been made to it in bringing it up to date. The updated study will be published on the Chislehurst Society’s website, and to make it more accessible in that format, we have changed some of the layout, and added some old photographs of Chislehurst taken in the first three decades of the 20th Century to illustrate the text. Whistles, tube type used by the police as well as the rattling pea type, were to warn of gas attack, while hand bells and football ricketys were only to be used as an indicator of some kind of alarm which escapes me now. Works horns, used to indicate starting, lunch breaks, and stopping times, steam operated like those fitted to ships’ funnels, were briefly silenced but were soon brought back into use to maintain production. (Rountree 2004) Introduction: First broadcast in 1968, the BBC television sitcom Dad’s Army depicted the comic antics of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, and remains an icon of British comedy. As the theme tune fades in the closing credits of the show an air raid siren sounds the ‘All Clear’, the tone that signaled the end of an air raid or alert period in British towns and cities during the Second World War. For many of those watching Dad’s Army the sound would have been deeply and possibly painfully familiar, triggering memories of wartime: one man, a child during the war, recalled almost sixty years afterwards “How welcome was Minnie's steady 'all clear' note when the raids were over. Whenever that note sounds at the end of an episode of 'Dad's Army' it still brings a lump to my throat and reminds me of those difficult times” (Beckett 2003). -
