AN AMERICAN SON OF SUFFOLK My uncle, Richard Daines, was born 23 August 1919 in Hyde Park, Utah, USA to Joseph Benjamin Daines and Martha Elenora Hansen. The family later moved a few miles away to Logan, Utah. Richard was my mother's brother and the 13th of 16 children - he often joked that he was the unlucky one! My Mom was a bit of a tom-boy and she and Richard were pals when they were growing up. His paternal grandparents were both born in Suffolk, England: Robert Daines in 1829 at South Elmham and Jemima Seamons in 1838, also in South Elmham. These grandparents had been great examples of faith, loyalty, unselfishness, service and hard work - and Richard made these qualities his own. Having chosen to serve a two-year mission to Missouri, USA for his church, Richard returned home to Utah on 7th December 1941 – the day of the Japanese attack on the American base at Pearl Harbour. He was soon in the military. Robert Daines b. South Elham 1829 Richard was sent to several army bases with (above) and (below) various assignments before later being transferred Jemima Seamons b. S.Elham 1838 to the U.S. Army Air Corps and trained as a pilot. After his flying training, Richard sailed on the Queen Elizabeth to England where he was assigned to the 495th Fighter Training Group at RAF Atcham, near Shrewsbury and flew P-47 Republic Thunderbolt fighter-bomber aircraft. Richard was very aware of his Suffolk roots when, just weeks later, he was posted to the 352nd Fighter Squadron that was part of the 353rd fighter group based in Suffolk. -

A M D G BEAUMONT UNION REVIEW SUMMER 2020 "And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: ―Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.‖ Well, we didn‘t see this one coming. Having written in the last REVIEW about ―a year like no other‖ which concludes in this Edition, no one thought we would be living through another. Over 90% of the BU have been confined and we have seen the cancellation of The HCPT and BOFs Pilgrimage to Lourdes, The Verdun Battlefield Tour, The BUGS Meeting at Westerham and Ant Stevens much anticipated Musical ―Streetwise‖: Now rescheduled for 24-29 May 2021. Much quoted at the moment ―We will meet again, Don‘t know where, Don‘t know when but I know we will meet again some sunny day: - Actually it looks like a cloudy day in the Autumn if we are lucky! I was amazed by the response to my Easter Message: I don‘t know whether it could be described as an ―Urbi et Orbi‖ moment but it did bring a huge response from OBs worldwide. One such from Patrick Agnew which I share with you:- ―Indeed. We have taken a lot for granted, during our years; much to be grateful for. Humanity is vulnerable to many things, some much worse than seen now. Globalization has it‘s many drawbacks, as well. Our precious little planet, in such perfect evolved balance, for so many eons, is also threatened by the economic ―progress‖ of mankind, whose numbers compound upwards and ravage resources, and are poisoning them. -

RAF News Brief 2019/2 Organisation Operational Service Medal In 2017, Her Majesty The Queen agreed the introduction of a new Operational Service Medal (OSM) for Op SHADER. In February 2019, Her Majesty The Queen graciously approved an extension of the medal without clasp for personnel assessed as making a significant and direct operational contribution, but outside the joint operational area for Op SHADER. Under new rules, personnel from all three services serving from outside the traditional area of operations, such as operators of RAF Reaper Remotely Piloted Air System (RPAS) aircraft, can now receive the Op SHADER medal without clasp. The award of the medal reflects the changing nature of modern conflict and recognises the vital contribution that personnel working from outside the operational area of Iraq and Syria have made to the campaign. This will be the first time that RPAS crews have received formal medallic recognition. Ground crew serving at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, where UK airstrikes over Iraq and Syria are launched from are also eligible, as well as Army and Navy personnel providing logistic and communications support. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, said: “I am delighted to see this wider recognition of the RAF’s vital contribution to Op SHADER. Under the previous criteria, only about 14% of RAF personnel who had supported Op SHADER were entitled to receive the OSM. Under the new criteria, that proportion rises to over two-thirds. I extend my personal thanks and congratulations to all those who will now receive the OSM for their outstanding Op SHADER contribution.” Update on Defence Estate Optimisation Programme The MOD published an update to the Defence Estate Optimisation Programme in March 2019, setting new information for 33 military sites across the UK.
