    WILSON & SWARBRICK “Lion Rampant” (Shirty Records) Reviewed by Michael Hunter http://rootsandbranchesaustralia.wordpress.com/2014/03/18/cd-review-wilson-swarbrick-lion-rampant/ I’m afraid I must start with a controversial statement – this is an album of no great surprises. Quite predictable, in fact. Please let me explain, though… When two acknowledged “masters of their game” come together, you just know it’s going to be intriguing. Jason Wilson, Canadian reggae star, and Dave Swarbrick, legend of English folk and folk rock have played live and recorded the occasional track together before, but now present their first full-length album, in the form of ‘Lion Rampant’. They both care about the music they play, be it their usual style or as here, an amalgamation of the two and then some. So you see, it’s predictably high quality, well-produced music with intelligently considered arrangements. The collection of guests that help out on various tracks do nothing but add to the listening experience as well. No shocks there either. Although the recording locations are spread throughout the world – for example, Swarbrick, Jerry Donahue, Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick recorded at Swarb’s studio in Coventry / Pee Wee Ellis (ex-James Brown and Van Morrison saxophonist) in Bristol, and The Bevvy Sisters in a Scottish studio – the overall sound quality works together so well that a listener would be unlikely to pick any difference in tone or fidelity. It’s all just so predic… Actually, I don’t think I can carry this “predictability” shtick any further! This s a great album, that despite combining what some may consider music from disparate cultures, works entirely as its own concept.

    SUMMER 2007 A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC FROM THE EDITOR “Beautiful problems” When I am putting together the many different items that make up an issue of Eastman Notes, I sometimes ask myself if there is a through-line (or if you prefer a musical term, a Leitmotif) that truly ties them together, and makes the maga- zine something more than an Eastman miscellany. When I listened to the distinguished composer Mario Davidovsky, who vis- ited Eastman this spring as the composition department’s fi rst Howard Hanson Composer-in-Residence, I took copious notes, of course. In going over them be- fore writing my article on the event, I was struck by a scribbled phrase: beauti- ful problems. This was Davidovsky’s own description of his compositions, but he NOTES seemed to be referring to the process and challenge of composing a piece, not the fi nished work. I can easily see why a composer, whose approach to his work Volume 25, Number 2 is both craftsmanlike and intuitive, might see his job in this light. The sound is hard to classify in a genre.It combines modern and classic music in a way that is hard to find. The new album Headspace showcases the style nicely. Maximum Ink: Who are some of your earliest influences and why? Joe Deninzon: My influences have a very wide range. In classical music it would be Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Mahler. In jazz, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In rock, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Hendrix, Kiss, Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Yes, The Police, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, the Beatles, to name a few. I like musicians who take chances and blaze new trails. I also love performers with a great stage presence who take their audience on a transcendental journey, which is what I strive to do. I also am fascinated by music that can connect with as many people as possible on a primal level, but can also be analyzed on a deeper level. Music that is seemingly simple yet has many layers of complexity underneath. That is something I’ve been trying to create for years, and I feel I’m getting closer.
