    Intercom – Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicação XIX Congresso de Ciências da Comunicação na Região Nordeste – Fortaleza - CE – 29/06 a 01/07/2017 Sing For Absolution: O Muse e o lugar do rock na música pop1 Antonio Magalhães Porto Lira2 Thiago Soares3 Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Recife, PE Resumo O artigo observa como a banda britânica Muse problematiza, durante sua carreira, desde o lançamento do álbum Black Holes and Revelations (2006) até o álbum The 2nd Law (2012) a dualidade e as tensões que existem entre as retrancas classificatórias do rock e do pop. A vinculação do Muse a tradições específicas do rock, sua aproximação de produtos adolescentes da cultura pop e estratégias performáticas ligadas a artistas pop geraram ambiguidades que foram interpretadas como um distanciamento das raízes de um rock supostamente "rebelde" e "autêntico". Palavras-chave: Muse, rock, pop, performance, autenticidade Introdução O rock é possivelmente o gênero mais romantizado da história da música popular. Desde o seu surgimento, na década de 1950, ele esteve associado à ideia de transgressão e rebeldia, aliado a um senso de responsabilidade social. Como símbolo artístico da contracultura dos anos 1960, esteve intimamente associado à emancipação da juventude que, pela primeira vez, começava a ter uma participação política ativa. Entretanto, quando o rock se tornou a principal expressão da contracultura , a ideia do gênero como o espírito de uma geração rebelde começou a se dissipar, dando espaço para um discurso desiludido, calcado em expressões chave, tais como “cooptação”, “incorporação” ou “a morte do rock”. Esse discurso se faz presente durante toda a história do gênero e, de acordo com o pesquisador de música popular Lawrence Grossberg, encena o conflito principal encenado pelo estilo durante toda a sua existência.
