Over three days from 7 to 9 July, the badminton competition gathered internationally renowned stars of yesteryear from nine surrounding countries to pit their skills against one another and allowed our members to enjoy watching the superb skills at close quarters. Among the players were Hariyanto Arbi, two-time All-England champion, crowd favourite Boonsak Ponsana, Razif Sidek, Yap Kim Hock and Ong Ewe Hock, and former world number one Foo Kok Keong himself. This tournament was held outside Malaysia for the first time since its inception in 2012. We are indeed proud to be given this vote of confidence by the Cup founders to host the games. Kudos to the Organising Committee and Club staff who have done us proud with the very successful conclusion of this tournament. Its futuristic design will shape yaur universe. 5M A 5H +5% SPEED! Because the M uscle Power construction keeps the frame and string in closer and tighter contact, the frame and string function as a single unit. Thanks to this unity, there is no energy loss and no energy waste—the full magnitude of smash energy at impact is transferred directly to the shuttlecock. Rounding corners realize the fram e's full power potential The Muscle Power grommet hole construction seats th e string on Round Archways that cause no string stress-load and no fatigue through contact friction. Rounding t he cor ners create total unity between the frame and string as they are in much closer and tighter contact, which realize a new magnitude of face stability that lets you launch shots with venomous power. Unrivaled Firepower — the entire frame receives and transfers the full energy of a hit straight to the shuttlecock. "Durability" helps hold tension. Compared with the M uscle Power construction, a con ventional racquet's less durable construction demon strates a sharp and progressive curve of diminished string tension over time. • V YONEX. MAHATHIR WINS VIET OPEN PRELIMINARY ROUND (Bernama
19 NOV 1997 VN-Badminton MAHATHIR WINS VIET OPEN PRELIMINARY ROUND HANOI, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The Vietnam Open 97 badminton tournament began today with trepidation among members of the comparatively small Malaysian team but with Mahathir Mustaffa easily winning his preliminary round. Mahathir, the sole men's singles player in the team, began ticking after a lethargic start to beat unknown Thai Sirachai Panpatchara 15-10, 5-4 at the Hanoi Indoor Stadium here. The other singles player registered for the Vietnam Open 97 -- the last leg of the badminton circuit before the World Grand Prix championships in Jakarta next month -- was Jason Wong but he had opted out because of injury. Mahathir faces a relatively experienced British player Mark Constable later in the evening which would also see the mixed doubles encounter between Tan Kim Her-Norashikin Amin and Denmark's Larsen Jesper-Ann Jorgensen. Recuperating from injury would also be in the minds of national pair Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock as this will only be the second international outing by the two together since the Thai Open. Before last week's Thai Open Kim Hock was absent from the badminton scene since May due to injuries. Kim Hock had stated that he would try his best but could not be playing 100 per cent due to the long absence. The seeded pair, now slated as world no 13, will only get to play tomorrow meeting the winners of the match between Vietnam's Le Dai Thang-Tran Duc Sang and Singapore's Patrick Lau-Zhao Jianhua. -
DONG JIONG WITHDRAWS from MALAYSIAN OPEN (Bernama 04
04 JUL 1997 Badminton-Open DONG JIONG WITHDRAWS FROM MALAYSIAN OPEN By: Hamdan Saaid KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Bernama) -- Olympic silver medalist and world number one Dong Jiong of China has withdrawn from the US$180,000 (RM450,000) Malaysian Open badminton championships in Kota Kinabalu from July 9 to 13. The Chinese Badminton Association has informed the organisers that Dong, who had also pulled out from the World Championships in Glasgow due to high fever, was unable to compete due to injury. It was another set back for the championships which had earlier seen the withdrawal of reigning world champion Peter Rasmussen of Denmark while Malaysia's top doubles champ Yap Kim Hock pulled out due to shoulder injury, forcing his partner Cheah Soon Kit to find a new partner. In Dong's absence, former world champion Joko Suprianto of Indonesia has been seeded first in the six-star tournament while defending champion Ong Ewe Hock has been drawn to meet Joko in the final. According to the seedings released by the International Badminton Federation (IBF), Ewe Hock is in the same half with third seed Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark. Christensen, who became the first European since Morten Frost Hansen to win a title in Asia when he won the Taiwan Open this year, is expected to clash with the Malaysian in the semifinal. Three-time champion Rashid Sidek has been seeded fourth and is likely to come up with Joko in the last four. Rashid beat him in the quarterfinals in the Olympi c Games in Atlanta. -
JOKO and EWE HOCK ADVANCE to THIRD ROUND (Bernama 29/07
09 JUL 1997 Badminton-Malaysian Open JOKO AND EWE HOCK ADVANCE TO THIRD ROUND KOTA KINABALU, July 9 (Bernama) -- Top seed Joko Suprianto and defending champion Ong Ewe Hock strolled into the third round of the US$180,000 (RM450,000) Malaysian Open badminton championship here tonight, with both notching up easy victories in the second round. Joko, a former world champion, with superior court control showed Malaysia's Malik Zainal the exit, winning 15-3, 15-3 in less than 25 minutes. Ewe Hock, second seeded in this year's championship, lived up to the top billing, sending his compatriot Mahathir Mustafa packing with an emphatic 15-5,15-9 victory. Three-time champion Rashid Sidek, who had been seeded fourth in this year's tournament, survived a second round scare before winning in three games in more than an hour against determined South Korean Kim Hyung Joon to join the elite in the third round tomorrow. The Korean's hopeful, who displayed aggressive play with superb jumping smash and tricky drop shots, took the first set 15-1 in 10 minutes. Rashid, Olympic bronze medallist, made amends in the second game, attacking with sharp chops and excellent net play to win the nerve-wracking set 15-9. It was a neck to neck affairs in the decider with both players were in fine form. They were tied at 8-8 and then 10-10 before Rashid raced into 12-10 lead. Hyung Joon fought back but wilted towards the end of the game to give way for Rashid to wrap up the game. -
