-- BERNAMA GHZ NAK .

  • MAHATHIR WINS VIET OPEN PRELIMINARY ROUND (Bernama
19 NOV 1997 VN-Badminton MAHATHIR WINS VIET OPEN PRELIMINARY ROUND HANOI, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The Vietnam Open 97 badminton tournament began today with trepidation among members of the comparatively small Malaysian team but with Mahathir Mustaffa easily winning his preliminary round. Mahathir, the sole men's singles player in the team, began ticking after a lethargic start to beat unknown Thai Sirachai Panpatchara 15-10, 5-4 at the Hanoi Indoor Stadium here. The other singles player registered for the Vietnam Open 97 -- the last leg of the badminton circuit before the World Grand Prix championships in Jakarta next month -- was Jason Wong but he had opted out because of injury. Mahathir faces a relatively experienced British player Mark Constable later in the evening which would also see the mixed doubles encounter between Tan Kim Her-Norashikin Amin and Denmark's Larsen Jesper-Ann Jorgensen. Recuperating from injury would also be in the minds of national pair Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock as this will only be the second international outing by the two together since the Thai Open. Before last week's Thai Open Kim Hock was absent from the badminton scene since May due to injuries. Kim Hock had stated that he would try his best but could not be playing 100 per cent due to the long absence. The seeded pair, now slated as world no 13, will only get to play tomorrow meeting the winners of the match between Vietnam's Le Dai Thang-Tran Duc Sang and Singapore's Patrick Lau-Zhao Jianhua.

28 FEB 1997 Badminton-Selection EWE HOCK AND HOCK HIN SELECTED FOR NATIONAL SQUAD KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- Nusa Mahsuri discards Ong Ewe Hock and Yong Hock Kin are among six single players selected for the national squad although no formal decision has been made by the two professional shuttlers. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) invited both players to join the national stable after trials were held last week to name the new national team, BAM President Datuk Dr Abdullah Fadzil Che Wan said today. No time frame was given to the two shuttlers to make up their minds, he said after chairing a BAM executive committee meeting. It was reported that both the players are in the midst of looking for sponsors after failing to get their contract with private company Nusa Mahsuri renewed last December. Besides Ewe Hock and Hock Kin, BAM also named Wong Choong Hann, Wong Ewe Mum, Lo Ah Heng and P. Kantharoopan as the singles players for the national squad. The doubles players named are Cheah Soon Kit/Yap Kim Hock, Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wai, Chew Choon Eng/Rosman Razak, Yap Yee Hup/Yap Yee Guan and Tan Kim Her/Lee Chee Leong. Dr Abdullah said the BAM has disbanded the national under-20 squad and instead divided the back-up squad into two divisions. In Division A. the single players are Jason Wong, Ramesh Nathan, Foo Yoon Keang, Ng Kean Kok and Mahathir Mustaffa. The doubles players in that division are Cheah Soon Thoe/Chang Kim Wai, Pang Cheh Chang/Khoo Boo Hock and Lim Theam Teow/Khoo Kok Keng.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) President Datuk Dr Abdullah Fadzil Che Wan said today the championship was open to private clubs, companies and other organisations. The meet is also open to professional clubs like Nusa Mahsuri and Wira Tangkis and they are allowed to rope in national or any foreign players. Abdullah said although the team was trimmed down, the players' rankings would be reviewed from time to time based on their performances in international tournaments and national trials.
