  • Thailand's Moment of Truth — Royal Succession After the King Passes Away.” - U.S
THAILAND’S MOMENT OF TRUTH A SECRET HISTORY OF 21ST CENTURY SIAM #THAISTORY | VERSION 1.0 | 241011 ANDREW MACGREGOR MARSHALL MAIL | TWITTER | BLOG | FACEBOOK | GOOGLE+ This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. This story is dedicated to the people of Thailand and to the memory of my colleague Hiroyuki Muramoto, killed in Bangkok on April 10, 2010. Many people provided wonderful support and inspiration as I wrote it. In particular I would like to thank three whose faith and love made all the difference: my father and mother, and the brave girl who got banned from Burma. ABOUT ME I’m a freelance journalist based in Asia and writing mainly about Asian politics, human rights, political risk and media ethics. For 17 years I worked for Reuters, including long spells as correspondent in Jakarta in 1998-2000, deputy bureau chief in Bangkok in 2000-2002, Baghdad bureau chief in 2003-2005, and managing editor for the Middle East in 2006-2008. In 2008 I moved to Singapore as chief correspondent for political risk, and in late 2010 I became deputy editor for emerging and frontier Asia. I resigned in June 2011, over this story. I’ve reported from more than three dozen countries, on every continent except South America. I’ve covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebanon, the Palestinian Territories and East Timor; and political upheaval in Israel, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand and Burma. Of all the leading world figures I’ve interviewed, the three I most enjoyed talking to were Aung San Suu Kyi, Xanana Gusmao, and the Dalai Lama.

  • 15.05.15 Sugar and Spice and All That's Nice I Like Sugar in My Mug Of
15.05.15 Sugar and spice and all that’s nice I like sugar in my mug of coffee. I can’t bear the thought of drinking the brew unsweetened. Hence, I am always on the lookout for natural sugars to use in place of the refined ones. I usually use jaggery in my coffee. But recently, my mother came across an interesting alternative. She promptly delivered the find to my home. It was in a neat pouch made of rough brown paper and that appealed to my sense of eco awareness. It had the words ‘Coconut Blossom Sugar’ printed on it. I have heard of this sugar, but I was under the impression that it was a sweetener and not a natural sugar. The suggestions of use on the package were intriguing and I decided to try it out. It resembles the Demerara sugar closely in colour and coarseness. The taste of it by itself is very clean and fresh, with an unmistakable sweetness of the elaneer. It is not overpoweringly sweet and when I added a little of it to my cold coffee, it tasted good. I noticed that it was free flowing and did not clump. To my knowledge, the coconut blossom sugar is obtained from the sap of the coconut flower. A cut is made at the base of the flower for and the sap that oozes out is collected, allowed to evaporate and the residue from that is the natural sugar. This is the technique followed in many parts of the world. However, at Farm Made, in Palladam, they do it differently.

  • MAHATHIR WINS VIET OPEN PRELIMINARY ROUND (Bernama
19 NOV 1997 VN-Badminton MAHATHIR WINS VIET OPEN PRELIMINARY ROUND HANOI, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The Vietnam Open 97 badminton tournament began today with trepidation among members of the comparatively small Malaysian team but with Mahathir Mustaffa easily winning his preliminary round. Mahathir, the sole men's singles player in the team, began ticking after a lethargic start to beat unknown Thai Sirachai Panpatchara 15-10, 5-4 at the Hanoi Indoor Stadium here. The other singles player registered for the Vietnam Open 97 -- the last leg of the badminton circuit before the World Grand Prix championships in Jakarta next month -- was Jason Wong but he had opted out because of injury. Mahathir faces a relatively experienced British player Mark Constable later in the evening which would also see the mixed doubles encounter between Tan Kim Her-Norashikin Amin and Denmark's Larsen Jesper-Ann Jorgensen. Recuperating from injury would also be in the minds of national pair Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock as this will only be the second international outing by the two together since the Thai Open. Before last week's Thai Open Kim Hock was absent from the badminton scene since May due to injuries. Kim Hock had stated that he would try his best but could not be playing 100 per cent due to the long absence. The seeded pair, now slated as world no 13, will only get to play tomorrow meeting the winners of the match between Vietnam's Le Dai Thang-Tran Duc Sang and Singapore's Patrick Lau-Zhao Jianhua.
