The Premier Family Club where the People make the Difference PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

OLD ADVERSARIES MET, NEW FRIENDS MADE

For the first time, Singapore Swimming Club played host to the International Cup tournament. Over three days from 7 to 9 July, the competition gathered internationally renowned stars of yesteryear from nine surrounding countries to pit their skills against one another and allowed our members to enjoy watching the superb skills at close quarters. Among the players were Hariyanto Arbi, two-time All-England champion, crowd favourite Boonsak Ponsana, , and Ong Ewe Hock, and former world number one Foo Kok Keong himself.

This tournament was held outside for the first time since its inception in 2012. We are indeed proud to be given this vote of confidence by the Cup founders to host the games. Kudos to the Organising Committee and Club staff who have done us proud with the very successful conclusion of this tournament.

President playing an exhibition match at On 28 July, it was time for the Club to show appreciation to all outgoing Singapore Swimming Club–Foo Kok Keong members of the 2016/2017 Sub-Committees and Ad-Hoc Committees and International Cup 2017. welcome incoming ones with a “Thank You and Welcome” Dinner. To all involved, a big thank you for having volunteered your services to lend your expertise and experience in ensuring that the Club’s machinery functions well. Management Committee Gary Oon, President Looking at our finances, it is absolutely essential that we reduce the huge Key Administration deficit. Some tough and unpopular decisions have already been taken to reduce operational costs, and we are expecting to implement more measures towards Yeo Chui Hee, Vice-President restoring the financial health of the Club. The Management Committee and Club Food & Beverage Management will be primed to exert further effort to address this matter with Social greater urgency. Vice-Chair, Key Administration Attaining the quorum at the last Annual General Meeting has allowed us to Gerad Loo, Hon. Treasurer make several changes to the Club Rules, such as allowing guests to visit the Finance Club two days in a week instead of one, which will certainly help to foster closer Swimming friendships and, hopefully, lead to increased patronage, especially of all our F&B outlets. In addition, a more equitable contribution policy involving Life Members Gope Ramchand who currently do not pay subscriptions will soon be implemented. GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE HARVESTING VALUES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Environmental sustainability has recently become a popular buzzword. It is surfacing more frequently in press reports and interest groups are discussing the topic with great fervour. The urgency of this matter is precipitated by the visible environmental changes brought about by man’s carelessness and neglect of our environment over the decades.

Urban farming has seen higher adoption as more advanced methods of growing edibles are sprouting with ingenuity by well-informed urbanites. Avid gardeners rent plots of land in urban farms and community gardens to cultivate herbs and vegetables. There is even a photogenic farm filled with lush greenery producing vegetables and herbs, decorated with stylish outdoor furniture on an office rooftop in the heart of the city.

In this issue of SPLASH, read about our own Secret Garden set in a quiet enclave away from the hive of activities in the Club. You can see the satisfaction on the faces of the founding members of the garden holding up their harvest with pride. Although we are not about to rent out plots of land for urban farming, we hope Club Management to conduct regular educational tours for youths at the garden for them to learn about the importance of environmental sustainability. The tour may include a Alfred Poon, General Manager show-and-tell session on harnessing solar power for electricity supply to the Club [email protected] and the collection of rain water for non-potable uses. Jennifer Wee, Financial Controller [email protected] We will explore the various options to be a more eco-friendly Club. You can start now by supporting us in our save-water campaign. If we can reduce the amount Lily Tan, Director, Swim & Sports of water used by 30%, we will have helped to contain the spiralling water bill and, [email protected] more importantly, save precious water.

Johnny Wong, Director, F&B [email protected] Social sustainability is another area in which all members should play a part. We often hear the adage “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Like all clubs, we Rajesh Kumar, Director, have our own set of Rules and Bye-Laws that serve as administrative guidelines to IT & Innovation create a desirable social environment for all members to enjoy. It is essential that [email protected] members respect these Rules and Bye-Laws, as they affect the interests of this

Mylene Soh, Director, community you have chosen to be affiliated with. Human Resource [email protected] Members should know by now that we practise zero tolerance on trespassing and neither do we condone members not registering their guests by surreptitiously Stanley Wong, Director, leading them into the Club premises through the loading bay or other areas. For Communications safety and security reasons, the loading bay is strictly out-of-bound to members. & Member Experience [email protected] If you can consume only home-cooked meals because of strict dietary Patsy Seet, Senior Manager, requirements, we suggest you have your meal before coming to the Club, as Secretariat, MC the Bye-Law states that only food and drinks purchased from the Club may be [email protected] consumed on its premises (this includes tea bags as well).

Ken Lim, Senior Manager, Membership Sharing common spaces responsibly also contributes to social sustainability. [email protected] One such example is by not leaving your belongings at your favourite seat in the Library to “chope” it while you take a one-hour-or-longer lunch break. Allow others Yuan ZaoYu, Head Coach, Swimming an opportunity to enjoy that cosy corner, too. [email protected] Members should be aware that circulation of letters or documentation concerning Suhaimi Bin Agil, Manager, Security [email protected] the Club or its members whether in hard copy or via electronic media (including WhatsApp) may contravene Club Rules. I encourage you to read the Rules and Patrick Ng, Manager, IES Bye-Laws available on our website (sswimclub.org.sg). They are not daunting but [email protected] basic principles for harmonious living, which most of us already practise at home.

James Goh, Manager, Jackpot The Club is your second home. Make it environmentally and socially sustainable. [email protected] Enjoy! Edwin Chow, Manager, Events [email protected] Alfred Poon General Manager

25 Bottle Gourd Also known as calabash or white-flowered gourd, the bottle gourd is easily distinguishable by its bottle-like shape. The DID YOU KNOW? bottle gourd plant thrives in a tropical environment. Bottle gourd juice has a cooling effect on your body. As we all know how unrelenting the weather in Singapore can get, drinking bottle gourd juice regularly helps in replenishing bodily fluid.

The garden is 100% free from harmful chemicals. The pesticide used is actually a homemade concoction of baking soda, vinegar, oil, non-toxic dishwashing liquid and chilli powder. The gardeners do not use chemical fertiliser as well, opting for a much more sustainable (and smellier) substitute–chicken droppings, which were sponsored by Johnny Loo. We’re going au naturale at the Club!

FUTURE PLANS FOR THE GARDEN The Club had decided not to make known the existence of the garden until we have seen some results and now we have.

So what’s next for this humble little garden? A discussion is underway with NParks to arrange for mini tours of the garden and give educational talks. Day activities and camps for children could also be organised to sow interest in horticulture among the young ones. There are also plans to start a club or interest group for gardening enthusiasts. So if you have what it takes—mainly lots of dedication, a healthy appreciation of nature and no fear of UV rays (green fingers are a bonus!), contact the Events Department at 6342 3650/3670 or email [email protected].
