The country caught my interest and I have been going back there every year since. This is why the decision to focus on Kosovo for my research was quickly made. As a tourist, you stand out, because there are not many there. I have seen the beautiful and positive sides of Kosovo but at the same time I have noticed how the country, years after the war, still has a long way to go. With my research, I want to give a helping hand and combine tourism with the development of the country and dealing with the war history. I have written this thesis for my master’s degree in Human Geography: Cultural Geography & Tourism at the Radboud University, Nijmegen. I went to stay in the capital of Kosovo, Pristina, for three months and experienced what it is like to live there instead of just being a tourist. I hope this thesis can be of value to the person reading it. Before its independence, Kosovo is an autonomous province under Serbia, which was part of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). Kosovo has a long history of conflicts since the occupation of Turkish Ottoman Empire in Balkan Peninsula area until the recent one was the Kosova War in 1998 – 1999. As a post-conflict society, Prishtina is suffering from several urban challenges. One of these challenges is road safety issue indicated by increasing the number of traffic accidents in Prishtina and even nationwide. National government considered this situation as unusual for European countries. This study aimed to answer a research question on how the road safety is perceived from two main perspectives, which are road users (pedestrians and cyclists) and stakeholders in the producer’s level of road safety strategy in Prishtina. This study was conducted in urban zone of Prishtina, which is also the case study, with the regards to the increasing number of traffic accidents, which involve pedestrians and cyclists, as the vulnerable road users.

    ‘’Yeni bir dil konuşmak, yeni bir dünyanın ve kültürün kapılarını açmaktır.’’ Frantz Fanon PRİŞTİNE GEZİ REHBERİ; Kosova’nın başkenti olan Priştine’ye seyahat etmeden önce okuduğum blogların ve diğer seyahat yazılarının birçoğunda gezmeye değer bir şehir olmadığı, vakit kaybı olduğu ve gereksiz masraf olacağı yazılıydı ancak ben hiçbir şehrin bu denli göz ardı edilmemesi gerektiğine inandığım için Balkanlar turumun rotasına Priştine’yi de dahil ettim. İyi ki de etmişim zira Priştine beni gayet memnun uğurladı. Tamam, diğer adı duyulmuş Balkan şehirleri kadar gezip görülecek pek fazla alternatif sunmuyor ama yine de en az iki gün boyunca sıkılmadan vakit geçirebileceğiniz kadar da verimli bir şehir. Kosova’nın incisi aslında Prizren, hatta Balkanlar turu için listenin üst sıralarında olması gereken bir şehir. Prizren ve Priştine’yi, İstanbul ve Ankara gibi düşünebilirsiniz. Asıl gezilecek yer Prizren ama Priştine’ye de sırf klasik başkent havası var diye haksızlık etmeyelim, gidelim, gezelim. ULAŞIM: Priştine, benim Balkanlar turumun son durağıydı. Rotamı ona göre şekillendirmiştim, ya Saraybosna’dan başlayıp Priştine’den dönecektim, ya da tam tersini yapacaktım. Bilet fiyatlarını kontrol ettiğimde Priştine’den dönüşün çok daha ucuz olduğunu gördüğüm için bu şekilde planladım. Pegasus yılın birçok dönemi Balkanlar için uygun fiyatları bilet satışı yapıyor, eskiden kurlar bu kadar uçuk olmadığı için çok daha ucuzdu ama yine de Avrupa ülkelerinin biletlerine kıyasla daha uygun denilebilir. Ara sıra bilet fiyatlarına bakıyorum, Priştine için tek yön ortalama 350-400 Lira dolaylarında. Zaten Balkan ülkeleri için en iyi alternatifiniz de Pegasus Havayolları. Diğer Balkan şehirlere göre Priştine’nin biletleri daha uygun, bu yüzden siz de benim gibi Priştine’den başlamayı veya Priştine’den dönmeyi düşünebilirsiniz.

    Issue 19 – Kosovo – November 12, 2010 Kosovo—is it a country? Seventy-one countries1 around the world say yes, but most of our Serbian friends would emphatically say no, and it would not take long for you to realize how emotionally charged this subject is. This is not the same as kidding your Southern relatives over the outcome of the US Civil War. The events are too recent; the experiences firsthand—not something read from a textbook. To diffuse the situation, it might be best to steer the conversation in a different direction. Map: This map shows Kosovo as a separate state.2 For us, Kosovo appears initially of little interest. There’s no stock exchange yet; it’s a small landlocked country—slightly smaller than Connecticut—with a population of only 2 million; and it’s one of the poorest countries in Europe on a per capita basis. We examine it here because of an opportunistic experience that Frontaura associate Eric Dahl had in September and October. Eric spent three weeks in Kosovo as part of the Kosovo-America Emerging Leaders Program that the US State Department sponsored. He was one of 13 individuals to participate in this business exchange 1Currently, 71 countries recognize Kosovo, including the US, Canada, and most of Western Europe. Notable countries that do not recognize Kosovo include China, Russia, and Serbia. Five EU member states—Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia, and Spain—also do not recognize Kosovo; some because of they do not want to create a precedent given separatist movements within their own countries.
