MSM MATH/SCIENCE SUBJECT GROUP MEETING including workshop Workshop: Preparation for Health Sciences with Hoda Atwa & Melanie Farquhar, Algonquin College Welcome to our PHS classroom. Students are actively working on the biology, chemistry, math and Success Strategies courses to achieve their academic goals. Within 16 weeks they hope to complete PHS and start one of the many health science programs offered by the college. There is, however, one BIG challenge. Having been out of school for so long or having been unsuccessful in the past creates a lot of self-doubt and fear. Building their self-confidence now becomes key. Join us as we share our strategies, resources and tips for helping our students succeed, including games and activities that you can try out in your own classroom. COM COMMUNICATIONS SUBJECT GROUP MEETING including workshop Workshop: Communications -- Overcoming the Trials and Tribulations of Assessing and Evaluating Student Writing with Leanna Johnston & Tara Williamson, Algonquin College Communications teachers face many challenges in marking student writing. These challenges can range from major grammar errors to questions of clarity and coherence. This sessions gives teachers a chance to share best practices and challenges in the following areas: marking on an LMS, rubrics, and a common marking code. Participants will be asked to provide tools and resources to share with the group. 2 INSPIRATION | EDUCATION | INNOVATION CONFERENCE 2019 JUNE 3 – 5 | ALGONQUIN COLLEGE | OTTAWA SSM SUPPORT STAFF MEETING including workshop Workshop: Innovative Approach to Sheridan AU Student Support with Shaian Clarke, Sheridan College Find out how Sheridan AU uses an innovative student support approach to inspire and motivate learners. Our online information sessions followed by one-on-one face-to-face meetings have proven to be an effective intake procedure. We strive to provide optimal support to our students by helping them set realistic goals and choose appropriate learning options that align with students’ end goals. Our recently strengthened student support strategy is designed to offer students broad access to AU support specialists as well as partner agencies. You will have the opportunity to engage in group discussion to share ideas about student support and how we can continue creating an inspiring and engaging environment. 6 – 8PM: PUB NIGHT @ The Observatory Pub DAY 2 | TUESDAY | JUNE 4 8 – 9AM: BREAKFAST 9 – 10:15AM A1 COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS (part 1 of 2: maximum 26 participants) with Deb Robinson, Algonquin College for the Courageous Conversations workshop Communication can take all kinds of forms and, when done effectively, can help us to build strong relationships both at work and in our personal lives. Often, we are presented with situations that require a difficult and/or uncomfortable conversation. Sometimes it takes “courage” to initiate such conversations. Through the sharing of effective practice, key strategies for success and case studies, participants will have an opportunity to learn and apply strategies that will make courageous conversations more positive and productive. Participants will be asked to bring along a scenario of a difficult conversation they need to have with a colleague, family, and/or friend. A second session called a “bridge session” will give the same participants a chance to reconvene to share challenges and successes experienced while having courageous conversations. This workshop will not address strategies for dealing with difficult conversations related to job performance. By the end of the workshop, participants will have had the opportunity to: • use a courageous conversation framework to prepare for a difficult conversation; • discover techniques to turn difficult conversations into productive conversations; • prepare and practice a 60 second opening statement for a difficult conversation • connect with others who are willing to share effective practice and provide support in this area in the future. 3 INSPIRATION | EDUCATION | INNOVATION CONFERENCE 2019 JUNE 3 – 5 | ALGONQUIN COLLEGE | OTTAWA A2 WELLNESS CONNECTION PROGRAM & THE POWER OF PEER MENTORSHIP with Lisa Alfano & Cheryl Richesin, Mohawk College Would taking a preventative approach to support students who face barriers result in higher motivation, perseverance, resiliency, and retention rates? Through a combination of workshops, one-on-one and group meetings, and community referrals, the Wellness Connection focuses on providing students with the academic and career readiness, interpersonal, and coping skills they need to successfully complete upgrading and transition to their next steps. Part of the program’s effectiveness lies in its delivery by an Academic Upgrading graduate. We invite you to join us to explore how the lessons of the Wellness Connection Program can help you explore the possibilities of peer mentorship in your academic upgrading program. A3 TEACHING WRITING USING ESSAY JACK with Bill Balfe & Hugh Barnett, George Brown College Come participate in an interactive workshop where you get to try the software Essay Jack for yourself and hear about our pilot project using it in the classroom with our students this past semester. MGR A4 MANAGER FOCUS CSC EMPLOYMENT PATH/SHORT-TERM PROGRAM PROJECT FOCUS with Barb Glass, CSC Does your college deliver a great, short-term, employment-focused program for your LBS/AU students? For the 2019-20 year, the CSC and other LBS support organizations received funding to promote curriculum and resource development for the Employment goal path within their delivery sector. Participants in this session will be introduced to the CSC’s 2019-20 Employment path project and invited to provide feedback about the project components and methodology, to inform this work in the coming year. Briefly, the three main components of the project include (but are not limited to) the following: a) developing a compilation of resources and curricula currently in use in short-term, Employment path LBS programs in colleges; b) investigating the use of “Career Readiness” competencies; and c) compiling an annotated list of open educational resources suitable for use in college LBS/AU programs (both in the Employment path and others). The resulting compilation can be used to support college LBS learners on the Employment path, to provide ideas and resources for short-term LBS programming, and to inform future development. 10:15 – 10:30AM: BREAK 10:30 – 12PM B1 COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS (part 2 of 2) with Deb Robinson, Algonquin College for the Courageous Conversations workshop B2 DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY WORKING GROUP COLLABORATION: CSC & AlphaPlus with Alan Cherwinski & Tracey Mollins, ALPHAPLUS, Barb Glass CSC What digital technology and digital literacy skills do students
