The BSP is a system designed to facilitate and simplify the selling, reporting and remitting procedures of IATA Accredited Passenger Sales Agents, as well as improve financial control and cash flow for BSP airlines.

There are BSP operations in some 180 countries and territories worldwide, with the system currently serving around 400 participating airlines with an on-time settlement rate of 100%. In 2016, IATA's BSP processed a total of $219 billion.

The benefits of a BSP include simplification of electronic ticketing and sales reports, savings through having less resources required for billing and payment collection, enhanced control, and having the overall process monitored by a neutral body.

Photo: Buffalo Trails Community Connections When visiting Siem Reap, spending time exploring the iconic temples of Angkor is at the top of every traveller’s to-do list, and with good reason. There is, however, much more to explore in Siem Reap – and indeed Cambodia – than these ancient wonders.

Arun in-flight magazine November 2017 - March 2018 17 An estimated 80% of the Cambodian population live in rural areas, so getting out of town and into the countryside can be an incredible way to connect with local communities, while deepening your understanding of the Kingdom and its people. While heading off to the horizon by yourself might be a little daunting, there are thankfully a number of excellent organisations offering community-based tours in and around Siem Reap.

One of these is Buffalo Trails (not to be confused with the Buffalo Tours), specialising in countryside experiences in the founders’ home village, located approximately 40 minutes south of Siem Reap by car. For visitors on a tight schedule, the two half-day tour options could be ideal. Spend a morning riding along rice paddy-lined roads in a buffalo cart, stopping to learn about seasonal produce and centuries-old farming techniques along the way, as well as trying your hand at traditional palm leaf weaving. Alternatively, take a gentle 4km wander through the village, meandering along lotus ponds and through and local markets as you learn about life away from main roads, and internet connections.

In addition, Buffalo Trails offers full-day and multi-day experience, some of which incorporate the Angkor Temples, as well as homestay opportunities in rural villages. All tours are private, so prices depend on the number of people in your group, but half-day tours start at $40 per person for a minimum of two people. If you are interested in learning more about life on the water, taking a tour on the mighty Tonlé Sap Lake with local ecotourism operator Osmose is an excellent option. The Tonlé Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, and with the help of Osmose’s excellent guides, there are many fascinating things for visitors here to learn, see, and explore.

Osmose specialise in boat tours to the Preak Toal Bird Sanctuary, and tours include opportunities to observe the birds living in ‘floating’ forests, learn about local environmental conservation efforts, gain an insight into daily life in floating home, and support the economic stability of the communities hosting visitors. Osmose offer four tour itineraries, two of which are full days, and two of which include overnight stays in floating communities. Adventurous travellers will a little more time to spare might want to consider heading further afield, to the charming rural community of Banteay Chmaar. Banteay Chmaar is approximately 2.5 hours from Siem Reap, so visitors are strongly advised to stay the night with one of the community’s host families. As well as exploring the temple ruins, activities available here include cooking classes, boat tours, bike rides, and a ‘Day in the Life’ experience, whereby visitors can connect with local farmers to learn about, and help with, traditional agriculture and fishing techniques. An extra-special candle lit dinner in an Angkorian temple ruin is also not to be missed!

Arranging your own private transport to and from Banteay Chmaar is welcomed, but the CBT is also able to assist with transportation. The importance of jewellery in Khmer culture continues today, playing a central role in both traditional wedding attire and dance costumes. It is perhaps unsurprising then that a wide variety of high quality jewellery can still be found in Siem Reap, making it the perfect shopping destination for travellers looking to expand their jewellery collection. Options available include everything from traditional designs to more modern pieces, made from locally-sourced materials including gold, silver, brass, gemstones, and even grains and fine silks.

How to get to town Phnom Penh International Airport is not too far from the downtown area, but getting to your hotel can take between 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and the time of day. Registered taxis are ready to pick you up curbside and charge a flat rate of $15 to most locations. Taxis are a great option as the road can be bumpy and dusty, and at certain times of year, quite hot. For travellers looking to save money, just walk to the airport’s gate to find a fleet of tuk-tuks that cost around $8 a trip, but be sure to bargain before you get in because they may ask for more. Hotels can also arrange for airport pickup by private car. Amenities The airport has recently undergone a $100 million expansion, bringing in a new food court and many new stores, with some yet to be completed. Many amenities are still on offer, though. Weary travellers can rest up at Amata Massage, which offers back and foot massages, while business class passengers can head to the airport’s new VIP and Premium lounges for a relaxing interlude before their flight.

Shopping options continue to grow, but Monument Books has been an airport staple since 1998, offering the latest titles in English, French and a selection other languages. Shoppers can hit up Dufry Cambodia for duty-free luxury items, while boutique shops offer traditional Khmer scarves and souvenirs as well as contemporary fashion. Shopping & Dining Phnom Penh’s airport is home to Cambodia’s first Starbucks outlet, which opened in December 2015. Coffee lovers can also get their fix at Costa Coffee or Blue Pumpkin bakery. Western food is available in the form of Burger King, Dairy Queen, the Pizza Company, and BBQ Chicken. Those looking for an Asian fix can stop at Taste of Asia, a sit-down restaurant also located in the terminal, or Pho 24 or Yoshinoya on the ground floor.

For more upscale fare, the Foreign Correspondent’s Club runs a popular branch in the departure terminal offering a selection of dishes from its iconic Riverside restaurant. Thirsty travellers can also stop by for a beer and a chance to use the free Wi-Fi.
