In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. A pesar de ser la impresión visual personal del periodista, siempre tiende a mantener la objetividad. Por lo general las crónicas periodísticas están basadas en temas que son de corte noticioso y por tanto de interés para un público amplio. Este tipo de relatos puede ser de contenido político, económico, social, cultural, artístico, religioso, deportivo, entre otros asuntos. Su desarrollo implica el uso de un lenguaje sencillo, preciso y directo. Es una narración detallada, secuencial y es minuciosa en su descripción. Parte del trabajo del periodista es investigar acerca del suceso para así poder tener una visión más amplia. La crónica periodística no solo se encarga de informar, sino que presenta una relación ordenada de los hechos, se encarga de explicar sus causas y expone una opinión acerca del tema dentro de su desarrollo Los titulares de la crónica anticipan la información (una causa, una consecuencia, el lugar en que sucedió). Además de la trama narrativa (narración de los hechos), se utiliza la trama descriptiva (descripciones de tiempo, espacio y protagonistas) y la conversacional (testimonios a través de las voces de testigos y de especialistas). UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles From Hom(e)ophobia to Hom(e)oerotics: Searching for a “Substitute for Salvation” in the Corpus of John Rechy A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Chicana and Chicano Studies by Omar González 2019 © Copyright by Omar González 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION From Hom(e)ophobia to Hom(e)oerotics: Searching for a “Substitute for Salvation” in the Corpus of John Rechy by Omar González Doctor of Philosophy in Chicana and Chicano Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Chair Several years before the chants of “¡Si se puede!” and “Chicano Power!” echoed through the fields of central California and against the pavement of East Los Angeles, a burgeoning Chicano writer named John Rechy from El Paso, Texas, disrupted the established rhetoric of racial binary politics with works such as “El Paso del Norte,” Evergreen Review (1958), and “Jim Crow Wears a Sombrero,” The Nation (1960). These articles represent two of the earliest works describing the racial apartheid experienced by Chicanas/os in Texas written from a Chicano perspective. Rechy then exposed another taboo, the homosexual underground of the pre-Stonewall Rebellion (1969) era, when one’s presence in a gay bar elicited harsh retribution from the state—from sex-offender status registration to involuntary electroshock therapy. Rechy’s debut novel, City of Night (1963), is a semi-autobiographical tale of a nameless protagonist navigating urban America as a hustler defying a society that criminalized queer ii bodies, desires, and lives. -

The body of work utilizes the space as a site of memory and storytelling, where the viewer walks, remembers and stitches together fragments of a larger story. Using multiple drawing strategies and installation approaches, the exhibition raises questions about the representability of the haunting, the narrative strategies of impossible stories, and the absence-presence of the body from the art work. -

The Christian Foundation of America’s Original Thirteen Colonies BY GLENN SWYGART At a time when the Christian foundation of American character is under Satanic attack, Americans must be reminded that those who established the original colonies were Christians whose primary motivation was freedom to practice and propagate Biblical Christianity. History teachers in elementary and secondary schools should communicate this foundational truth to their students, who can then transmit it to future generations. Post-Reformation Background It was in the sovereign plan of God that the beginnings of what became the United States coincided with the aftermath of the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century. In the spirit of Biblical truth, three major groups developed in the seventeenth century whose goals were to make that truth free in both belief and practice; thus all became champions of religious freedom. The first of these groups were the English Baptists, who were the result of two separate Reformation movements. First, the Swiss Anabaptists, whose basis was Believer’s Baptism and opposition to state churches. Second, the English Separatist Puritans, whose foundation was religious freedom. The origin of the English Baptists came in 1609, when John Smyth, a Separatist Puritan pastor who had taken his Gainsborough Congregation to Holland, came under the influence of the Anabaptists. Smyth and his church adopted Believer’s Baptism and strengthened their opposition to a state church. After Smyth died about 1612, part of his congregation returned to England and became the General Baptists. The English Particular Baptists began in 1638 with a stronger Calvinistic influence. Both groups impacted the early colonies for religious liberty.
