UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA Los Angeles from Hom(E)Ophobia to Hom(E)Oerotics: Searching for a “Substitute for Salvation” In UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles From Hom(e)ophobia to Hom(e)oerotics: Searching for a “Substitute for Salvation” in the Corpus of John Rechy A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Chicana and Chicano Studies by Omar González 2019 © Copyright by Omar González 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION From Hom(e)ophobia to Hom(e)oerotics: Searching for a “Substitute for Salvation” in the Corpus of John Rechy by Omar González Doctor of Philosophy in Chicana and Chicano Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Chair Several years before the chants of “¡Si se puede!” and “Chicano Power!” echoed through the fields of central California and against the pavement of East Los Angeles, a burgeoning Chicano writer named John Rechy from El Paso, Texas, disrupted the established rhetoric of racial binary politics with works such as “El Paso del Norte,” Evergreen Review (1958), and “Jim Crow Wears a Sombrero,” The Nation (1960). These articles represent two of the earliest works describing the racial apartheid experienced by Chicanas/os in Texas written from a Chicano perspective. Rechy then exposed another taboo, the homosexual underground of the pre-Stonewall Rebellion (1969) era, when one’s presence in a gay bar elicited harsh retribution from the state—from sex-offender status registration to involuntary electroshock therapy. Rechy’s debut novel, City of Night (1963), is a semi-autobiographical tale of a nameless protagonist navigating urban America as a hustler defying a society that criminalized queer ii bodies, desires, and lives. Rechy, a participant in this twilight world of hustlers, drag queens, and scores offers a bleak, unfiltered view into the subaltern sexual underground of post-war America during an era when “gay rights” was a foreign concept. In the face of rising violence against queer brown bodies, most notably the 2016 Pulse nightclub massacre, the 2013 murder of eight-year-old Gabriel Fernandez, and soaring HIV rates, I utilize interdisciplinary methods to propose a theory of “hom(e)oerotics.” Hom(e)oerotics is a decolonial framework drawing from themes from Rechy’s corpus to accomplish the following outcomes: construct a queer Chicano literary genealogy, interrogate the intersection of Chicanx and LGBTQ+ activist history, and examine the historical and contemporary toxicity of gay male masculinity and sexuality. I ground critical queer Chicano theory in Rechy’s works to name, explicate, and heal the multiplicity of violence exacted upon the bodies of gay Xicanx men, as Chicana lesbians have accomplished for their community for decades. iii The dissertation of Omar González is approved.     The LGBT Health and Inclusion Project Locally Available Sexual Health Materials – A Consultation with Bisexual People The LGBT Health and Inclusion Project NHS Sussex and Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC), have commissioned a consortium of organisations providing services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people in the city to conduct a series of consultations with local LGBT people. The aim is to use the information gathered to feed into local service commissioning, planning and delivery. The partner agencies are: Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard, THT South, MindOut, Allsorts Youth Project, Brighton Bothways and the Clare Project. The consortium has employed a worker to coordinate the project, known as the LGBT Health and Inclusion Project (LGBT HIP). Please note, the following report presents information about the consultation and engagement work conducted by LGBT HIP and should not be taken as a position statement of any of LGBT HIPs Consortium partners. Background A local LGBT action-research project (Count Me In Too) presented a number of important findings in relation to sexual health and bisexual people.1 The research indicated that bisexual participants perceived that sexual health information available locally did not cater to their needs as bisexual people, and a significant proportion (28%) said that it was not appropriate to their sexual practices.2 The LGBT HIP consortium therefore identified a need to consult bisexual people about sexual health information available locally.   • Exploring the Narratives of Prep Discontinuation Prep, the Acronym
    From training wheels to chemical condoms: exploring the narratives of PrEP discontinuation This paper explores experiences of PrEP, a HIV-prevention intervention, among bugchasers, gay men who eroticise HIV. While PrEP has been hailed as a ‘game changer’ in HIV-prevention, little attention has been paid to why and how some people may discontinue it in the face of HIV risk, such as bugchasers do. This paper relies on interview data with bugchasers themselves to discuss the process of discontinuation and its effects. The paper argues that, for these men, discontinuation is a fluid, complex and sometimes contradictory process. It also describes how participants perceived themselves as being at different stages of discontinuation. The paper also analysed how these men saw PrEP as a barrier to intimacy, risk and a tool to negotiate their desires and identity: through discontinuing PrEP, these men were able to reflect on and build their identities as bugchasers. Keywords: PrEP, HIV, sexual health, discontinuation, adherence. PrEP, the acronym for pre-exposure prophylaxis refers to the use of antiretroviral medication to prevent HIV infection in those at risk of it. Since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it in 2012, PrEP has been hailed as a ‘game changer’ in HIV prevention and has become a ‘hot topic’ in debates around sexuality (Brady 2015; Rhoden-Paul 2019). While PrEP is available for a range of people, these debates have mostly crystallized around gay men’s use of it. However, if this is the case, how do we approach costume in a television show like Sex and the City (1998-2004), which we know (via press articles and various other extra-textual materials) to be comprised of designer clothes? Once onscreen, are the clothes in Sex and the City to be interpreted as „costume‟, rather than „fashion‟? To be sure, it is important to tease out precise definitions of key terms, but to position fashion as the antithesis of costume is reductive. Landis‟ claim is based on the assumption that the purpose of costume is to tell a story. She thereby neglects to acknowledge that the audience may read certain costumes as fashion - which exists in a framework of discourses that can be located beyond the text. This is particularly relevant with regard to contemporary US television which, according to press reports, has witnessed an emergence of „fashion programming‟ - fictional programming with a narrative focus on fashion.

    The Role of the United Nations in Combatting Discrimination and Violence against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex People A Programmatic Overview 19 June 2018 This paper provides a snapshot of the work of a number of United Nations entities in combatting discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation, gender identity, sex characteristics and related work in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and intersex communities around the world. It has been prepared by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the basis of inputs provided by relevant UN entities, and is not intended to be either exhaustive or detailed. Given the evolving nature of UN work in this field, it is likely to benefit from regular updating1. Joint UN statement Joint UN statement on Ending violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people: o On 29 September 2015, 12 UN entities (ILO, OHCHR, UNAIDS Secretariat, UNDP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNODC, UN Women, WFP and WHO) released an unprecedented joint statement calling for an end to violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. o The statement is a powerful call to action to States and other stakeholders to do more to protect individuals from violence, torture and ill-treatment, repeal discriminatory laws and protect individuals from discrimination, and an expression of the commitment on the part of UN entities to support Member States to do so.
