Traces Some past events offer the historians who study them an embarrassment of riches. The archives of a successful company or an influential US president can easily fill a building, and distilling them into an authoritative book can consume decades. Other events leave behind only the barest traces—scraps and fragments of records, fleeting references by contemporary observers, and shadows thrown on other events of the time—and can be reconstructed only with the aid of inference, imagination, and ingenuity. -

“GOVERNOR FOR LIFE” THOMAS MAYHEW OF NANTUCKET AND MARTHA’S VINEYARD 1593 Thomas Mayhew was born. He would grow up in a town called Tisbury in Wiltshire, a tiny place between London and Bristol to the west. His father would die when he was 21 and he would become a merchant in the town in which he likely had been apprenticed, Southampton, due south, one of the great seaport towns of England. One of the London merchants who was very active in the colonization of New England was Matthew Cradock, and somehow Mayhew would become acquainted with Cradock and, after having been in business for himself for about 10 years, accept an offer in 1631 to become Cradock’s agent in the colonies. INDEX GOVERNOR THOMAS MAYHEW THOMAS MAYHEW 1630 In England, William Coddington was chosen as an Assistant of the company (Assistant Judge of Court of Colony of Massachusetts Bay) before his embarkation with John Winthrop. He had lived at Boston in County Lincoln, where the record of St. Botolph’s church shows that he and his wife Mary Moseley Coddington, daughter of Richard Moseley of Ouseden, in County Suffolk had Michael Coddington, baptized on March 8, 1627, who died in two weeks, and Samuel Coddington, born on April 17, 1628, buried on August 21, 1629. The Winthrop fleet that brought “the Great Emigration” of this year comprised 11 vessels: • Arbella (the flagship) •Ambrose • William and Francis • Talbot • Hopewell • Jewel • Whale •Charles • Success • Mayflower •Trial Altogether the fleet brought about 700 colonists — here is an attempt at reconstructing a passenger list. -

Copyright 2018 1 Lutheran American Work with People of Color 1637- Missionary work on the western side of the Atlantic began in 1637, as [John Campanius], trained at Uppsala, was a Missionary to Indians in America, sent by the Church of Sweden. Jacob Fabritius is noted to have baptized a black man on Palm Sunday 1669, named Emanuel. He had black members of his congregations in Albany, New York City and northern New Jersey. Early American missionary/pastor, [Justus Falckner] entered the University of Halle in 1693, where he studied theology under [August Hermann Francke]. With his Halle training already in place, his ordination to the ministry in America was the first on the continent. THE MAYHEW MANOR OF TISBURY* It is a fact unknown in history, except perhaps to a few local antiquarians, that the island of Martha's Vineyard, located just south of Cape Cod and now a part of the Common- wealth of Massachusetts, was at one time under the jurisdiction of the Province of New York, and constituted one of its first three county governments. Martha's Vineyard, together with the Elizabeth Islands, Nantucket, and No Man's Land, wras incorporated November 1, 1683, by the Provincial Assembly of New York, as Duke's County, coincident with the creation of King's County (now Brooklyn), and Queen's County (Long Island), but for twenty years before that date it had been an integral part of the Province of New York. In order to understand the political relationship of these far-flung isles of the southeastern New England coast to the New York government, it is necessary to hark back to the early settlement of this country when King James established the Council for New England, which gave this territory to certain of the nobility, and other prominent Englishmen interested in the colonization of the New World. -

The book appeared just after the violence and controversy of the American Civil War, and just as that of racial segregation and the World Wars began to brew. In spite of this, Bacon's History highlights the glories and triumphs of Christianity's development in the United States. In particular, he focuses on how all kinds of Christians from many different countries have met and come together in America. He looks forward to a future in which these Christians can live united in faith.While some critique Bacon's History for its perhaps excessive patriotism, others appreciate Bacon's ecumenical vision. In any case, the book stands in a rather unique place in American history. By virtue of this, it tells the story of American Christianity in a way particularly refreshing for an American era characterized by the political polarization of the church. Mayhew, born in Tisbury, southwest England in 1591, had long been at odds with his Londonbased employer, Matthew Cradock, when he decided to strike out once again.3 On the 13th of January, 1636, Cradock, former Governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony, wrote a seething letter from London to his colleague in Massachusetts, John Winthrop. Cradock reported that he had “beene putt to by the most vyle bad dealings of Thomas Mayhewe,” his agent,4 who had caused “so much disquiet my mynd as I thanke God Neuer aney thing ded in the lyke manner.”5 Mayhew’s dubious business practices were confirmed by 1 Charter of Massachusetts Bay, 1629 (Boston: Directors of the Old South Work, 1896), 89. -

Wes/ager (Paper read before the Delaware Swedish Colonial Society April 3, 1956) When the Swedes made their appearance in the Delaware River Valley they were immediately brought into contact with the native Indian tribe known as the "Lenni Lenape." Some Swedish wri.ters called them "Renappi", and they were also termed "River Indians," "Our Indians," and later by the English as "Delaware Indians." Their villages were on or near the banks of the Delaware River and its main tributaries. They were one of a '1arge famil}' of Algonkian-speaking tribes occupying the coastal area from Maine to the Carolinas. ( 1) The Swedes were also thrown into contact with two groups of so called "Minquas Indians," namely, the "Black Minquas" and the "White Minquas." Both were Iroquoian-speaking peoples. The White Minquas were also known as the Susquehannock; their territory lay along the Susquehanna River and its tributaries; the Black Minquas lived west of them. These Minquas were great hunters and trappers, and they had large stores of beaver and otter skins to trade with the whites. The Lenape were primarily agriculturalists and fishermen. This does not imply that they did not hunt, because we know they sought deer, bear, and other animals to serve the food and clothing needs of their families. -
