Notice of Race Notice of Race 30 June - 10 July 2021 Crewed & Double Handed NOTICE OF RACE NOTICE OF RACE www.aegean600.com The Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) is pleased to announce the organization of the AEGEAN 600, a non-stop race of 600 nm in the Aegean Sea, giving the opportunity to all participants to sail in the sea which is considered to be the cradle of the western civilization. Our ambition is to include this race in the international 600 nm classic offshore races. The HORC has organized, during its 60 years’ operation, many interna- tional sailing events, most notably the Aegean Rally (now being in its 58th edition), the 1982 ½ ton, 1984 ¼ ton, 1989 ¾ ton, 2008 ORCi World Championships, and many other international events in various categories of Offshore Racing. AEGEAN 600 will be held from 30 June -10 July 2021. Xenios Zeus, the ancient Greek god of hospitality, promises to provide to all crews exceptional hospitality and a good organization. We look forward to hosting you in Greece in July 2021 in the first edition of AEGEAN 600.     Encyclopedia of Border Conflicts The Imia/Kardak dispute: the creation of rocky grey zones in the Aegean between Greece and Turkey Sarah Green Summary The Imia/Kardak dispute began in 1995 when a Turkish cargo ship ran aground on an uninhabited islet in the Aegean Sea. When the Turkish captain refused help from Greeks on the grounds that the islet was in Turkish territory, a serious dispute developed between Turkey and Greece. Yet in the same year, trade relations across the Aegean significantly improved because of the EU-initiated Barcelona Process, demonstrating the effects of the dual-border zone that the Aegean has become. _____________________________________________________________________ On December 26th 1995, the captain of a Turkish cargo ship called the Figen Akat made an error while sailing in the southern Aegean, a sea located in eastern Mediterranean between Turkey and Greece. He ran his vessel aground on one of two uninhabited islets called Imia in Greece and Kardak in Turkey. It was an easy error to make, as the rocks are a navigational hazard. They are small, and they are located in a narrow corridor between some of the Greek Dodecanese islands (the nearest being Kalymnos, Kalolimnos, and Kos), and the Turkish mainland near Bodrum.1 It was not a very serious accident, as nobody was injured and nothing toxic was spilled into the sea. However, the captain did something that later escalated into a major territorial 1 dispute between Greece and Turkey: when the Greek coastguard offered assistance, the Turkish captain refused, on the grounds that the islets were in Turkish, not Greek, territory.2 A few days later, an official from the Turkish government sent a note to the Greek embassy located in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, to state that these islets were part of Turkish territory.

Reger (islands), 1994 Introduction The continental part of the map comprises three distinct geographic regions: the coasts of Ionia and Caria, the Maeander valley, and the mountainous hinterland of Caria. The coastal region, settled by Greeks in their first great expansion in the Iron Age, became the site of major cities and many smaller settlements along its deeply indented coastline. The excavators of Ephesus and Miletus have long surveyed the regions of those cities, and other classical scholars have investigated the rest of Ionia. The Ionian coast has seen great physical changes since antiquity. The vast quantities of alluvium deposited by the R. Maeander have made the ancient port of Ephesus an inland town, and turned the former Gulf of Latmos near Miletus into a lake (inset and E2). The Carian coast, with its numerous small ports, is well known thanks to the researches of Bean and Fraser. The broad Maeander valley, which divides Ionia from Caria, always played a major role in the economy of the region with its fertility and the communication it provided between coast and interior. It has not been systematically surveyed. The river’s tributaries offered an outlet for the scattered settlements in the basins and plateaus of the heavily forested interior of Caria. Much of this region, as well as many parts of neighboring ones, was carefully explored by Louis Robert. The map omits Carian sites for which no Greek name is attested; for these, see Radt (1970). For unnamed village sites also not marked, see Marchese (1989, 147-54).

    PRESS RELEASE UNHCR Greece Public Information Unit Νο . 16 /05 Athens - 22 .01.201 6 12 Tagiapiera str. 115 25 Athens Tel +302106726462-3 Fax +302106747256 UNHCR deplores loss of life in the Aegean Sea, amidst worsening www.unhcr.gr @unhcrgreece weather conditions UNHCR deeply deplores the loss of life for the umpteenth time in two tragedies in the early hours of today when at least 42 people from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, including 18 women, 17 children and 7 men have been reported dead off Farmakonissi and Kalolimnos islets near Leros and Kalymnos islands, in South-East Aegean, as the weather worsens and desperate refugees in search of safety, take extraordinary risks, lured also by discounts offered by smugglers. UNHCR staff received survivors at the ports of Kalymnos and Leros and are assisting them to meet their basic needs, including accommodation in hotel rooms, counselling, liaison with authorities and communication with families who are abroad. Despite a temporary decrease in arrivals in recent days, a surge was observed in the last 48 hours with more than 3,000 people arriving per day to the Greek islands, amidst stormy weather conditions. Newly arriving refugees told UNHCR that the smuggling rates had halved in recent days. This discount acts as a grim enticement to take extraordinary risks given worsening weather. According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, at least 60 people have now died in the Greek territorial waters of the Aegean Sea since the start of the year, while at least 10 people are missing. Tens of more people have lost their lives in Turkish territorial waters since the beginning of the year.

WILSON & HEINZ GRILLITSCH KURZFASSUNG Die Herpetofauna der Dodekanes-Insel Simi und des Nachbareilandes Sesklia wurde auf Grundlage von Beobachtungen des Erstautors sowie anderer Herpetologen, Literaturzitaten und einer kleinen Belegsammlung des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien zusammenfassend dargestellt. Nach der Literatur waren bisher 13 Reptilien- arten und eine Amphibienart für die Insel nachgewiesen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit konnte die Europäische Katzennatter Telescopus fallax (FLEISCHMANN, 1831) der Artenliste der Insel hinzugefügt und das Vorkommen der seltenen Goldstreifenmabuye Trachylepis aurata (LINNAEUS, 1758) bestätigt werden. Eine vergleichende herpeto- logische Artenliste von Simi, Rhodos, Tilos, Khalki, Nissiros und des türkischen Festlandes wird vorgelegt. ABSTRACT Information about the herpetofauna of the Dodecanese Island of Simi and the neighboring Islet of Sesklia was summarized based on recent herpetological trips by the first author and other herpetologists, as well as litera- ture data and a small collection of specimens from the Natural History Museum in Vienna. From the literature, thirteen reptile species and a single amphibian species were known to occur on the island. In the present paper the European Cat Snake Telescopus fallax (FLEISCHMANN, 1831), may be added to the species list of Simi, and the pres- ence of the rare Levant Skink Trachylepis aurata (LINNAEUS, 1758) was confirmed. A comparative herpetofaunal species list of the islands of Simi, Rhodes, Tilos, Khalki, Nissiros and the Turkish mainland was provided.

INTRODUCTION Since the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Greece and Turkey have each been vying for territory within their common waters in the Aegean Sea. For over five decades, the two governments have contested the territorial sovereignty of the two rocky islets of Imia, the delimitation of the continental shelf and the territorial sea, and whether the continental shelf is a natural prolongation of Greece or Turkey’s mainland coast.1 Not surprisingly then, the two countries have disagreed on where to draw the respective border in the Aegean Sea2 and, perhaps more fundamentally, on the application of certain practices under international law.3 The Aegean Sea is itself unique being 400 miles long and 200 miles wide, with thousands of islands scattered throughout it.4 Of particular importance are the Imia rocks and islets, which are scattered approximately 4 miles off Turkey’s west mainland coast, in the southeast * Barrister-at-Law of the Honorable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, New York State licensed attorney, License at Law (Cyprus), M.A.
