ABSTRACT (maximum 200 words) Throughout history, the Aegean Sea has been a sea of crisis. Today, Turkey and Greece—the two countries surrounding the Aegean Sea—continue to dispute several issues regarding the Aegean. The most significant dispute is over the sovereignty of several islands. This research presents a method to produce an arbitration solution to allocate these disputed islands between the two countries. We identify 39 disputed islands and six important attributes for each island, including perimeter, area, population, distance to Greece, distance to Turkey, and territorial water area. After applying spatial analysis to two open-source maps, we apply utility theory, the Analytical Hierarchy Process, and the Nash arbitration scheme to propose an arbitration solution. The arbitration solution tends to allocate to Turkey those islands with larger areas of territorial waters and greater proximity to the Turkish mainland, and allocate to Greece those islands with larger population and greater proximity to the Greek mainland. 14.     SURVEILLANCE, SUBJECTIVITY AND RESISTANCE AT THE FRONTIERS OF EUROPE: A MATERIALIST ANALYSIS OF THE GREECE-TURKEY BORDERS by Özgün Erdener Topak A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (November, 2014) Copyright © Özgün Erdener Topak, 2014 Abstract The Greece-Turkey borders have become one of the main points of undocumented entry into the European Union since 2009. The borders operate through complex elements: historical processes that shape their structure, ideologies that legitimize their violent existence, techniques and technologies that allow them to be practiced over migrants, and migrants complying with or resisting these structures, ideologies, techniques, and technologies. In order to provide a comprehensive analysis of these complex elements of the border, this dissertation critically engages with Althusser’s aleatory materialism, Foucault’s analytics of power and other complementary theories, and it analyzes the four aspects of the border in individual chapters. 1. Structural-decentred aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes the historical material processes of colonialism and racism and the contemporary material processes of neoliberal globalization and post-politics that enable the EU borders to function as a decentred totality and to exclude certain peoples and not others. 2. Practical aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes how the border operates in practice with specific surveillance technologies (such as radar systems and EUROSUR mechanisms at the borderzones) and techniques (such as everyday racist violence in urban contexts) that produce specific biopolitical effects on migrants. 3. Subjective aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes how migrants develop diverse subjectivities when confronted by the border’s material violence, including stranger subjectivity, abject subjectivity, religious subjectivity, nomadic subjectivity, and dissident subjectivity.

ABSTRACT The volcanic rocks of the South Aegean arc (SAAVA) form a chain from the Gulf of Saronikos (Susaki, Egina, Poros, Methana) at West, to an area close to the Anatolian coast at East (Kos, Nisyros and minor islands), through the central part (Milos and Santorini island groups). The volcanic activity began in the Lower Pliocene at Egina (4.7 Ma) and lasted until present days, with the still active Methana, Milos, Santorini and Nisyros volcanoes. The beginning of volcanism is younger in the central sector of the arc. Volcanic center location was controlled by large tectonic lineaments, most of them still active, trending E-W to NW-SE for the western part and mainly NE-SW for the central and eastern parts of the arc. Volcanic fields developed along ellipse shaped areas with the longest axis oriented perpendicular to the subduction front. In the western volcanic fields (Susaki, Egina-Poros-Methana and Milos), volcanic centers are mostly monogenetic and no composite volcanic structures are present. In the eastern sector of the arc, Santorini and Nisyros are important composite volcanoes with caldera structures.

Armadillidium hifidum Dollfus, 1905 and probably Schizidium alm.anum Verhoeff & Strouhal, 1967 are Junior Synonyms of S. fissum; Pareluma minuta Omer-Cooper, 1923, Schizidium kalalae Frankenberger, 1939, Armadillidium euphrati Vandel, 1980, and possibly Armadillidium granum Dollfus, 1892 are junior Synonyms of S. davidi. The new species S. osellai, S. reinoehli and S. rausi from Turkey apd S. golovatchi from Armenia are described. New records are presented for S. davidi, S. fissum, S. hybridum, S. oertzeni, and 5'. tiberianum. The diagnostic characters of all treated species are illustrated. INTRODUCTION The Aegean Sea (Aegean) dispute between Greece and Turkey is complex and long-standing.1 Both nations disagree on: (1) the sovereignty of certain Greek islands, islets, and rocks;2 (2) the demilitarization of particular islands;3 (3) the continental shelf delimitation;4 (4) the territorial sea breadth;5 and (5) the extent of territorial airspace.6 This paper explores the Greek-Turkish conflict concerning the continental shelf delimitation and the territorial sea breadth in the Aegean. Part II discusses the historical and legal background of the Aegean dispute. Part III describes the current Greek-Turkish conflict regarding the delimitation of the continental shelf and the territorial sea in the Aegean, including the nations’ arguments.
