"iii ! ! INTRODUCTION OF VOLUME 2 Volume 2 of this gazetteer provides information about all towns and villages of Greece. It includes all the municipalities and communities of Greece. The place names are presented here both in Greek and in English transliteration. The information for this volume was taken from five main sources: 1. A Greek gazetteer written and published in 1974 by the National Statistic Office of The Greek Republic, based on census of 1971, titled Lexikon ton Dimon, Koinotiton kai Oikismon tis Ellados [Λεξικόν των Δήµων, Κοινοτήτων και Οικισµών της Ελλάδος]. 2. A Greek gazetteer written and published in 1984 by the National Statistic Office of The Greek Republic, based on census of 1981, titled Lexikon ton Dimon, Koinotiton kai Oikismon tis Ellados [Λεξικόν των Δήµων, Κοινοτήτων και Οικισµών της Ελλάδος] 3. A Greek gazetteer titled Plires Geografikon Lexikon tis Ellados [Πλήρες Γεωγραφικόν Λεξικόν της Ελλάδος], by Grigorios Stefanos, Athens 1937. 4. A gazetteer incorporated in the Neon Lexikon [Νέον Λεξικόν] by Dimitrios V. Dimitrakos. 5. I Thesmiki Metarrythmisi tis Protovathmias Topikis Autodioikisis – To Shedio “Ioannis Kapodistrias” [Η Θεσµική Μεταρρύθµιση της Πρωτοβάθµιας Τοπικής Αυτοδιοίκησης – Το Σχέδιο «Ιωάννης Καποδίστριας»] meaning: Legislative Reformation of the First Degree Local Self- !Government – The Plan “Ioannis Kapodistrias.” In order to understand more about this gazetteer it is best to read the Introduction of Volume 1, p. vii. Pages viii - ix of volume 1 explain about the Transliteration (Romanization) system used for this gazetteer. The abbreviations and Greek terms used in !this volume are listed on next page. This volume consists of this explanatory introduction and five main parts. Part Ia gives the names of towns in Greek and their transliteration in English. The towns are listed in Greek alphabetical order. When a name of a town includes the words Ano, Dyo, Exo, Kato, Nea, Neon, Nisos, Palaios, etc the town is listed under !the name followed by the word Ano or Dyo etc. For example: Ano Mpralos is listed as Mpralos Ano. Part Ib gives the names of towns transliterated in English and their Greek name. The towns here are listed in English alphabetical order. When a name of a town includes the words Ano, Dyo, Exo, Kato, Nea, Neon, Nisos, Palaios, etc. the town !is listed under the name followed by the word Ano or Dyo etc. For example: Ano Mpralos is listed as Mpralos Ano. Part II provides in English information about each town in columns; the first column lists the town’s name, the second column lists the Dimos/Koinotis (Municipality/Community) to which the town belongs, and the third column lists the corresponding Eparhia (District). When a name of a town includes the words Ano, Dyo, Exo, Kato, Nea, Neon, Nisos, Palaios, etc the town is listed under the name followed by the word Ano or Dyo etc. For example: Ano Mpralos is listed as Mpralos !Ano. Part III provides in English information about each municipality/community in columns. The first column lists the Dimos/ Koinotis (Municipality/Community), the second column lists the corresponding Eparhia (District), the third column lists the Nomos (County), and the fourth column gives the Mitropolis (Diocese). Each Dimos (Municipality) appears in capital letters !while each Koinotis (Community) appears in lower case. Part IV provides in English information about the major changes of the Administrative Division of Greece which took place on January, 1999, according to The Plan “Ioannis Kapodistrias,” by which all Communities were dissolved and new Municipalities were formed. This information is valuable because towns now belong to a different municipality; therefore, the offices of former municipalities/communities have been moved to different towns. The first column lists the name of the former Dimos/Koinotis (Municipality/Community), the second column lists the name of the corresponding Nomos (County), the third column lists the name of the corresponding new Dimos (Municipality), and the fourth column lists the town in which the offices of the new municipality are located. ! ! ! ! ! There are a few things therefore to remember when using this gazetteer. If you are starting with an English spelling of a Greek place name, it may have been rendered into English by any of several different transliteration systems. As examples: The Greek letter Β is pronounced as “V” but many systems transliterate it to English B. The English “B” sound is spelled Mp in Greek. The Greek Letter Δ is pronounced like the “TH” in Mother. The English “D” "iv sound is spelled Nt in Greek. The English “J” sound is spelled Tz in Greek. Some diphthongs (double vowels) have a unique pronunciation in Greek. The English “short E” sound (as in red) may be spelled Ai in Greek. The “long E” !sound (as in green) may be spelled in Greek as I or Y or Ei or Oi. !When starting with an Anglicized version of a Greek place name, remember that you may need to look for: B under V or MP J under TZ C under K KH under H CH under H PH under F D under D or NT RH under H DH under TH or D QU under KV H under the vowel that comes immediately TH under TH or D ! after the H X under H "v ! To use this gazetteer effectively it is recommended that you spend some time getting familiar with the Romanization Chart on page vii. Remember that Greek alphabetical order is not the same as English. For example: the letter Z is !at the end of the English alphabet; yet it is the sixth letter in the Greek alphabet. Names of towns and municipalities have changed through the years, and continue changing. A municipality that has an old and a new name is listed in this volume under both names. In each case, the alternate name is listed in parentheses, with the abbreviation “o.” [indicating old name] or “n.” [indicating new name]. For example: Araxou !(o. Paralimnis) and Paralimnis (n.
