The park’s saproxylic beetle fauna, associated with dead wood and veteran trees, can be considered as nationally important. Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

SURVEILLANCE, SUBJECTIVITY AND RESISTANCE AT THE FRONTIERS OF EUROPE: A MATERIALIST ANALYSIS OF THE GREECE-TURKEY BORDERS by Özgün Erdener Topak A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (November, 2014) Copyright © Özgün Erdener Topak, 2014 Abstract The Greece-Turkey borders have become one of the main points of undocumented entry into the European Union since 2009. The borders operate through complex elements: historical processes that shape their structure, ideologies that legitimize their violent existence, techniques and technologies that allow them to be practiced over migrants, and migrants complying with or resisting these structures, ideologies, techniques, and technologies. In order to provide a comprehensive analysis of these complex elements of the border, this dissertation critically engages with Althusser’s aleatory materialism, Foucault’s analytics of power and other complementary theories, and it analyzes the four aspects of the border in individual chapters. 1. Structural-decentred aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes the historical material processes of colonialism and racism and the contemporary material processes of neoliberal globalization and post-politics that enable the EU borders to function as a decentred totality and to exclude certain peoples and not others. 2. Practical aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes how the border operates in practice with specific surveillance technologies (such as radar systems and EUROSUR mechanisms at the borderzones) and techniques (such as everyday racist violence in urban contexts) that produce specific biopolitical effects on migrants. 3. Subjective aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes how migrants develop diverse subjectivities when confronted by the border’s material violence, including stranger subjectivity, abject subjectivity, religious subjectivity, nomadic subjectivity, and dissident subjectivity. -

Checklist of the Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) of British Columbia Scott Russell Spencer Entomological Collection Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC Vancouver, B.C. The family Pompilidae is a cosmopolitan group of some 5000 species of wasps which prey almost exclusively on spiders, giving rise to their common name - the spider wasps. While morphologically monotonous (Evans 1951b), these species range in size from a few millimetres long to among the largest of all hymenopterans; genus Pepsis, the tarantula hawks may reach up to 64 mm long in some tropical species (Vardy 2000). B.C.'s largest pompilid, Calopompilus pyrrhomelas, reaches a more modest body length of 19 mm among specimens held in our collection. In North America, pompilids are known primarily from hot, arid areas, although some species are known from the Yukon Territories and at least one species can overwinter above the snowline in the Colorado mountains (Evans 1997). In most species, the females hunt, attack, and paralyse spiders before laying one egg on (or more rarely, inside) the spider. Prey preferences in Pompilidae are generally based on size, but some groups are known to specialize, such as genus Ageniella on jumping spiders (Araneae: Salticidae) and Tachypompilus on wolf spiders (Araneae: Lycosidae) (Evans 1953). The paralysed host is then deposited in a burrow, which may have been appropriated from the spider, but is typically prepared before hunting from existing structures such as natural crevices, beetle tunnels, or cells belonging to other solitary wasps. While most pompilids follow this general pattern of behaviour, in the Nearctic region wasps of the genus Evagetes and the subfamily Ceropalinae exhibit cleptoparasitism (Evans 1953). -

A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements. -

Remarkable for the fauna of Northwest-Germany are the records of Aporus unicolor, Arachnospila wesmaeli, Ceropales maculata, Cryptocheilus notatus, Episyron albonotatum, and Evagetes gibbulus. Remarks on the biology, phenology, abundance, and endangerment of the species are gi - ven. Our data together with data from the literature are compiled in a checklist for the spi - der wasps of Westphalia. The results emphasize the importance of the primary and secon - dary sand habitats for the Westphalian spider-wasps. 1. Einleitung Die Wegwespen (Pompilidae) sind weltweit mit über 4200 beschriebenen Arten kosmo - politisch verbreitet ( BROTHERS & F INNAMORE 1993). Ihre Stellung innerhalb des Phyloge - netischen Systems der aculeaten Hymenopteren ist noch umstritten. Die Aculeata im weiteren Sinne werden in 3 monophyletische Teilgruppen gegliedert: Die Chrysidoidea (ein Taxon das die Goldwespen (Chrysididae) und ihre Verwandten umfasst), Apoidea (Grabwespen („Sphecidae“) und Bienen (Apidae), wobei letztere als Teilgruppe der Grabwespen angesehen werden können (siehe z. B. OHL 1995)), und Vespoidea (alle restlichen Aculeaten). -

Evansl ABSTRAcr.--Qne hundred forty-three species of Pompi]idae are recorded from Colorado, slightly more than half the number occurring north of Mexico. Some of these occur principally at higher altitudes or in the northern part of the state; this group includes 5 species of Holarctic distribution. Others (such as the tarantula hawks, Pepsis) are prevalent across the southern third of the state and range south into New Mexico and often into Mexico. Still others are widely distributed wherever there is friable soil suitable for nesting. Certain genera are more or less restricted to preying upon certain spider taxa, while others are generalists and a few are cleptoparasites ofother Pompilidae. -
Trap-Nesting Bees and Wasps and Their Natural Enemies in Regenerated Broad-Leaved Forests in Central Japan

We installed trap- nests made from internode tubes of bamboos and reeds in ten secondary deciduous broad-leaved stands of different ages of one to over 100 years after clear-cutting. Thirty-two species (eight families of Hymenoptera and one of Diptera) were obtained with the trap-nests: 20 host species and 12 of their natural enemies. The species richness of most families of hosts and natural enemies, except for Pompilidae, was higher in younger to middle-aged stands than in older ones over 70 years old. On the contrary, the family Pompilidae (spider wasps) proliferated in both young and old stands, with its relative abundance becoming greater with the increase in stand age.
