San Marcos has a variety of recreation programs, classes and special events planned for residents to enjoy during the spring and summer months, making the city a destination for family fun. From aquatics to concerts in the park, from art to athletics and dance classes, there is something for everyone. In April, Las Posas Pool will feature open recreational swim and classes for all ages and skill levels. San Marcos pools will also host locations for the World’s Largest Swim Lesson on June 24. Family Swim Nights begin June 24 and summer swim lessons start as early as July 4. Program space is limited for all aquatic programs so register today by visiting www.san-marcos.net/register . As evenings heat up, special events are a major draw. The popular Summer Concerts in the Garden series takes place from May to September at the Wood House Gardens in Woodland Park, 1148 Rock Springs Road. The city will offer two free Summer Concerts in the Garden and two free family movies. On June 11, the annual Summer Music Fest – formerly the Rock, Blues & BBQ – at Walnut Grove Park will feature live music, food, vendors and an adult refreshment garden. Other special events include the annual 4th of July Celebration and an overnight Family Campout under the stars. Adventure Day Camp for school-aged children is another popular summer program. Operating Monday through Friday from 7 am to 6 pm, the camp gives children hands-on learning opportunities across a variety of subjects. Half-day specialty camps offer children five to 14 years the opportunity to have fun while developing new skills and interests. Camps offered include Video Game Design, Gear 2 Robots, Top Chef Cooking, Painting like the Masters, Princess Piano, Cheer, Soccer and more. Fun Friday Nites offers parents the chance to go out on the town while their school-aged children enjoy games, crafts, pizza and movies with friends. For those looking for easy and fun ways to get in shape and stay fit, the city offers many structured classes and sports leagues including dance, Zumba, co-ed volleyball, basketball, adult softball and aquatics classes. If you prefer to self-recreate and experience the outdoors, San Marcos has more than 63 miles of trails throughout the community for hiking, biking and urban walking. Wildfires occur in many areas throughout California, and San Marcos has experienced its own wildfire danger. If your home is adjacent to or near undeveloped land with dense shrubs or vegetation, also known as a wildland-urban interface, then you could be at a higher risk when wildfire occurs. Here are safety tips on how to provide and maintain defensible space that extends at least 100 feet from your home:

Armorlite Drive overhaul is underway

A $3.3 million overhaul of Armorlite Drive – supported primarily by a SANDAG Smart Growth grant and developer impact fees – is underway and scheduled for completion this fall. The project will transform about a third of a mile of the road, next to the Palomar Station Apartment Community and parallel to Mission Road and the Sprinter track adjacent to Palomar College campus, into a “complete street” featuring bike and pedestrian friendly improvements that support alternative modes of transportation. The overhaul will add a two-way cycle lane, sidewalks and two mid-block crosswalks with rectangular rapid flashing beacons. The Armorlite improvements will also bring angled and parallel parking, pedestrian lighting, bicycle racks and benches to the area.
