Critics question the constitutionality ofjoint-training between the military and civilian police, as well as the Fourth Amendment considerationsraised by SWAT tactics. This Note examines the history, mission, and continuing needfor police SWAT teams, addressingthe constitutionalissues raisedconcerning training and tactics. It explains how SWATjoint-training with the military is authorized by federal law and concludes that SWAT tactics are constitutionallyacceptable in a majority of situations. Though these tactics are legal andconstitutionally authorized, this Note acknowledges the validfearscritics have regarding the abuse of such police authority, and the limitations of constitutionaltort jurisprudence in adequately redressingresulting injuries. • Often I Feel We Victimize the Victim More Than the Suspect Does”: Examining Officer
“Often I Feel We Victimize the Victim More Than the Suspect Does”: Examining Officer Attitudes Toward Sexual Assault Complainants by Eryn Nicole O’Neal A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved November 2015 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Cassia Spohn, Chair Kristy Holtfreter Cody Telep ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2015 ABSTRACT The purpose of this project is to better understand police perceptions of sexual assault complainants by assessing their likelihood of questioning a complainant’s credibility and by examining police attitudes toward victims of sexual assault. To advance understanding of these issues, this dissertation (1) expands upon prior research by drawing on a sample of officers from one of the largest metropolitan police departments in the United States and, (2) through the use of framing theory, contributes to the literature by focusing on the attitudes of police toward sexual assault complainants and how these beliefs are shaped by day-to-day experiences. This dissertation investigates two research questions using a mixed-methods approach. The data come from 400 sexual assault complaints that were reported to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and 52 LAPD detective interviews. I quantitatively examine the factors that influence officer perceptions of complainant credibility, focusing on indicators of “real rape,” “genuine” victims, “inappropriate” victim behavior, and “character flaws.” I contextualize this work by examining police attitudes toward sexual assault victims using qualitative data taken from interviews of sex crimes detectives. This research contributes to the broader case processing literature by focusing on victim credibility, a factor consistently found to influence case processing decisions.

Journal of Criminal Justice and Law Review : Vol. 1 • No. 1 • June 2009 IDENTIFYING LARGE REPLICABLE FILM POPULATIONS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE FILM RESEARCH: A UNIFIED FILM POPULATION IDENTIFICATION METHODOLOGY FRANKLIN T. WILSON Indiana State University ABSTRACT: Historically, a dominant proportion of academic studies of social science issues in theatrically released films have focused on issues surrounding crime and the criminal justice system. Additionally, a dominant proportion has utilized non-probability sampling methods in identifying the films to be analyzed. Arguably one of the primary reasons film studies of social science issues have used non-probability samples may be that no one has established definitive operational definitions of populations of films, let alone develop datasets from which researchers can draw. In this article a new methodology for establishing film populations for both qualitative and quantitative research–the Unified Film Population Identification Methodology–is both described and demonstrated. This methodology was created and is presented here in hopes of expand the types of film studies utilized in the examination of social science issues to those communication theories that require the examination of large blocks of media. Further, it is anticipated that this methodology will help unify film studies of social science issues in the future and, as a result, increase the reliability, validity, and replicability of the said studies. Keywords: UFPIM, Film, Core Cop, Methodology, probability. Mass media research conducted in the academic realm has generally been theoretical in nature, utilizing public data, with research agendas emanating from the academic researchers themselves. Academic studies cover a gambit of areas including, but not limited to, antisocial and prosocial effects of specific media content, uses and gratifications, agenda setting by the media, and the cultivation of perceptions of social reality (Wimmer & Dominick, 2003).

By Humphrey Taylor The public generally gives Judge Lance Ito and Prosecutor Marcia Clark positive marks for their work in the O.J. Simpson trial. Majorities also give defense counsel Johnnie Cochran and Robert Shapiro positive marks -- but not as positive as Marcia Clark's. F. Lee Bailey, on the other hand, is rated 47% positive and 48% negative. These are some of the results of a nationwide Harris Poll of 1,005 adults surveyed between March 23 and 26. This Harris Poll also finds that majorities of the public tend to believe witnesses Denise Brown, Nicole Simpson's sister, and police officer Mark Fuhrman, and not to believe housekeeper Rosa Lopez.
