It was also a historic year for French automobile manufacturers, who produced close to 5.65 million vehicles, an increase of 1.4% over 2001, when the previous record was set. Despite the unfavorable international economic climate and stable output in France, production outside the country grew 4.1%. This increase reflects the growing internationalization of our automobile manufacturers, confirmed by their excellent performance in the world’s main markets. This is particularly true in Europe, which is now in effect our national market, with French makes accounting for more than one new car in four sold. French manufacturers have gained an average of one percentage point of market share a year since 1997, representing a remarkable success in an aggressively competitive market. 2003 is more challenging, tougher, more uncertain. But we are optimistic. Improvements in all areas mean that we have laid solid foundations. Examples include MPVs, diesel engine developments and evolving concepts for commercial vehicles. Our manufacturers also stand out through their technological choices and advances in the areas of environmental stewardship, reduced fuel consumption and enhanced safety. There are—and will continue to be—ups and downs. But further opportunities exist for improvement, particularly in markets for vehicle ownership outside Western Europe. As a result, the French automotive industry will continue to expand in the medium and long term. anuel omez 01 nalysis and Highlights // COMITÉ DES CONSTRUCTEURS FRANÇAIS D’AUTOMOBILES ontents /ANALYSIS AND HIGHLIGHTS orld urope rance > The automotive industry – 20 facts and figures 12 > New passenger car registrations by country and 20 > Global production of French automobile 01 > Chairman’s message automobile manufacturer manufacturers 02 > Table of contents 14 > Range and model analysis 21 > Markets for new French vehicles 04 > 2002 key data 15 > Model breakdown and ranking 22 > Diesel passenger cars 06 > World motor vehicle production 16 > Technical characteristics of new passenger cars 23 > New passenger car registrations by model 07 > World automobile manufacturer rankings 17 > Light commercial vehicles and range 08 > Exports by major automotive country 18 > The heavy truck market and production 24 > French manufacturers in 2002 09 > The global automotive market 19 > The automotive industry in the European Union 25 > Automotive industry research and development 10 > Trends in production and trade among the three spending leading global automotive regions 26 > French automotive industry economic data 11 > Global trade in automotive products 27 > Global production sites of French automobile manufacturers 28 > Motor vehicle exports 29 > French automotive foreign trade 31 > Automotive industry production and its economic impact 32 > Vehicle price indices 33 > Retail financing 34 > Used passenger cars 35 > Consumer spending on private vehicles 36 > Car ownership 37 > Personal vehicles in use 38 > Automobile traffic 39 > Vehicle sales and repairs 40 > Employment 02 nalysis and Highlights // COMITÉ DES CONSTRUCTEURS FRANÇAIS D’AUTOMOBILES /STATISTICS orld urope rance 42 > World passenger car production by country, 46 > Passenger car production by engine type, 52 > World production of French manufacturers, 1980-2002 cylinder capacity and country, 1990-2002 1980-2002 42 > World commercial vehicle production by country, 46 > Diesel passenger car production by make 56 > Light commercial vehicle production by type, 1980-2002 and country, 1980-2002 1980-2002 43 > World production by manufacturer and economic 47 > Commercial vehicle and truck production 56 > Commercial vehicle production by weight area, 2002 by weight, manufacturer and country, 2002 and engine type, 1980-2002 44 > Passenger car exports by country and as 48 > New passenger car registrations by automobile 57 > New passenger car and commercial vehicle a percentage of world exports, 1980-2002 manufacturer in Europe, 1985-2002 exports by make, 1980-2002 44 > Commercial vehicle exports by country and as 48 > New light commercial vehicle registrations 58 > New passenger car and commercial vehicle a percentage of world exports, 1980-2002 by automobile manufacturer, 1985-2002 exports by destination, 1980-2002 45 > New passenger car registrations by country, 49 > New passenger car registrations by country 59 > New passenger car registrations by make, 1980-2002 and automobile manufacturer, 2002 1980-2002 45 > New commercial vehicle registrations by country, 50 > New diesel passenger car registrations 59 > Used passenger car and light commercial vehicle 1980-2002 by country, 1980-2002 registrations, 1980-2002 50 > New passenger car and light commercial vehicle 60 > New diesel passenger car registrations by make, registrations by country, 1980-2002 1980-2002 51 > New light commercial vehicle registrations 60 > New light commercial vehicle registrations by country, 1980-2002 by make, 1980-2002 51 > New heavy truck registrations by country, 61 > New passenger car and light commercial vehicle 1980-2002 registrations by make, 1980-2002 51 > New coach and bus registrations by country, 61 > New heavy truck registrations by make, 1980-2002 1980-2002 61 > New coach and bus registrations by make, 1980-2002 62 > New vehicle registrations by French region and “department”, 2001 and 2002 64 > Physical and financial data on the automobile manufacturing industry, 1980-2002 65 > Physical and financial data on the automotive equipment industry, 1980-2002 66 > Vehicle ownership: vehicles in use, density, vehicle ownership 67 > Fuel consumption and prices 67 > Automobile fleet emissions in mainland France 68 > Automotive taxes 68 > Automotive imports and exports in value 69 > Comité des Constructeurs Français d’Automobiles 70 > Useful addresses 71 > CCFA publications 03 nalysis and Highlights // COMITÉ DES CONSTRUCTEURS FRANÇAIS D’AUTOMOBILES orld urope rance 01/SIXTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR OF GROWTH FOR FRENCH AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS IN 2002 — In 2002, worldwide production by French automobile manufacturers continued the expansion begun in 1997. Although growth was slower last year, the increase since 1997 has been significant, reaching 40% over the five-year period, or an additional 1.6 million vehicles. French automobile manufacturers achieved these results by leveraging both their domestic manufacturing sites and their facilities in other countries. MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School CERTIFICATE FOR APPROVING THE DISSERTATION We hereby approve the Dissertation Of Irina Aervitz Candidate for the Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Director (Dr. John M. Rothgeb) Reader (Dr. Walter Arnold) Reader (Dr. Venelin I. Ganev) Graduate School Representative (Dr. Margaret Ziolkowski) ABSTRACT THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR IN CHINA AND RUSSIA: THE ROLE OF THE STATE IN TECHNOLOGY APPROPRIATION by Irina Aervitz The focus of this study is automobile industry in China and Russia. Specifically I am looking at the state attempts to encourage technology development in the automobile sector. My goal is to look for variations in the overall policy environment created by the state with regard to technology enhancement in the automobile industry in China and Russia and particularly focus on policy implementations at the enterprise level by observing the way enterprises appropriate technology by using various sources of technology appropriation provided by the state policies. I believe that this research is important because it reviews the literature on the role of the state in industrial development and introduces the concept of “technology appropriation.” Technology appropriation lies in the heart of the companies’ technological competitiveness and is based on the sources of technology made available to companies by the regulatory environment created by the state. Most importantly, this project offers analysis of the empirical data collected during a series of interviews in the domestic and foreign enterprises operating in both countries. This analysis attempts to lift the “curtain” over the companies’ technology-oriented strategies and the way they take advantage of the existent state policies affecting the process of technology appropriation.

The production and sales growth was insignificant, in comparison with the first quarter of 2012. The increase in the share of foreign cars in the car production and sales structure also slowed down. Car Production Over the first three months of 2013, in Russia, 452.5 thousand cars were manufactured, which is only a 0.62% increase on the production result for the same period of 2012. Shares of Russian and foreign cars in the production structure also remained almost unchanged. In January-March 2013, 140.6 thousand cars of Russian brands were produced, which amounted to 31.07% of the total production volume. For comparison, In January-March 2012, their share was equal to 31.11%. Despite the total production volume stability, in the first quarter of 2013, the dynamics of cars, produced by various manufacturers, differed significantly. So, most enterprises, producing cars of Russian brands, showed the negative production dynamics. AVTOVAZ’s car production decreased by 4.63%, in particular, due to the assembly termination of Lada Kalina cars of the previous generation and preparation for the production of a new model of Kalina cars. The car production of Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant also decreased, by 14.1%.

  • Future International Business Strategy of Chinese Automotive Manufacturers: a Case Study on Their Overseas Operations in the Russian Market
Annals of Business Administrative Science 9 (2010) 13–32 Online ISSN 1347-4456 Print ISSN 1347-4464 Available at www.gbrc.jp ©2010 Global Business Research Center Future International Business Strategy of Chinese Automotive Manufacturers: A Case Study on Their Overseas Operations in the Russian Market Zejian LI Abstract: Since 1955, when new China began to reconstruct its automotive industry, and for a long time after, Chinese car exports consisted mainly of commercial automobile products (chassis and finished vehicles, etc.) which were exported in small quantities by state-owned manufacturers. Since 2000, however, with the emergence of independent automobile manufacturers, the number of vehicles exported has increased rapidly, and the makeup of exports has shifted gradually from a focus on commercial vehicles to a focus on passenger vehicles. With regard to overseas expansion, manufacturers’ market access strategy has led to the rapid transition from parts trade to local knock-down manufacturing. However, despite the rapid progress of foreign expansion, problems have arisen due to insufficient risk management know-how with regard to foreign expansion on the part of independent Chinese manufacturers, and the fact that their experience acquired from domestic markets is not applicable to overseas markets. For these reasons, following a period of prosperous overseas expansion, some Chinese automobile manufacturers have been forced to withdraw from one market or have chosen to switch to another market. This entire process, from rapid prosperity
