They are linked to the standard social studies and humanities curriculum themes of art and literature, First Amendment rights, labor, progressive politics, and Red Scare, the rise of industrialization, immigration, women's rights, World War I, and yellow journalism. The unit uses the body of Goldman's personal papers, including correspondence and writings, as well as newspaper stories, government surveillance reports, and legal documents. As the records illustrate, Emma Goldman, a major figure in the history of American radicalism and feminism during a period when the expression of controversial ideas was itself dangerous, was among America's most prominent advocates of labor's right to organize, reproductive rights, sexual freedom, freedom of speech, and freedom of the individual. This curriculum is divided into five major topics all taught through the use of primary documents. Topics are: (1) Immigration;(2) Freedom of Expression;(3) Women's Rights; (4) Anti-Militarism; and (5) Arts and Literature of Social Change. A biographical essay on Emma Goldman is included, as well as an annotated list of six recommended films and videos and a 60-item annotated bibliography. In 1919 and 1920, Attorney General Palmer led a crusade against Americans believed to be “leftist,” “anarchists,” and threats to the general safety of democratic America. His plan was to arrest and deport those threats to America. The Department of Labor thwarted many of Palmer’s deportations attempt because deportation was under its jurisdiction and the Department objected to Palmer’s methods. These Palmer Raids were one aspect of the Red Scare, the fear of, and reaction to, political radicals in America. With the Russian Revolution making !news, for many people this Red Scare became more of a reality. A fear was that the Russian Revolution would bleed into America via Russian immigrants and other immigrants sympathetic to the Russian cause. People were targeted by Palmer both fairly and unfairly. A person could denounce his or her neighbor and proof of radical activities was not necessary for the arrest to happen. Below is a speech given by Palmer regarding his crusade against “Red.” In two years hundreds of individuals were deported, multiple thousands were arrested, and more than a few were unfortunately innocent of being !anarchists, communists, or leftists. When anything that challenged the authority of the state – concepts based on enlightenment, immigration, or socialism – were deemed to be a threat to the status quo and immediately eliminated by way of legal restrictions. Once the façade of the Old World was completely severed following the Great War, nations in Europe and throughout the West started to revive various nineteenth century laws in an attempt to suppress the outbreak of radicalism that preceded the 1919 revolutions. What this dissertation offers is an extended understanding of how nineteenth century government policies toward radicalism fostered an environment of increased national security during Germany’s 1919 Spartacist Uprising and the 1919/1920 Palmer Raids in the United States. Using the French Revolution as a starting point, this study allows the reader the opportunity to put events like the 1848 revolutions, the rise of the First and Second Internationals, political fallouts, nineteenth century imperialism, nativism, Social Darwinism, and movements for self-government into a broader historical context.

Immediately in Ten Days That Shook the World, Reed reveals how Russian society was in a flux. The point, however, is to change it.” – Karl Marx That is the point, it’s true—but not in this course. This quote, indirectly, hints at a deep tension in Marxism. If we want to change the world we need to understand it. But the desire to change something can infect our understanding of it. This is a pervasive dynamic in the history of Marxism and the first step is to admit there is a problem. This means acknowledging the presence of wishful thinking, without letting it induce paralysis. On the other hand, if there are pitfalls in being upfront in your desire to change the world there are also virtues. The normative 1 goal of social change helps to avoid common trappings of academia, in particular, the laser focus on irrelevant questions. Plus, in having a set of value commitments, stated clearly, you avoid the false pretense that values don’t enter in the backdoor in social science, which they often do if you’re paying attention. With this caveat in place, Marxian social science really does have a lot to offer in understanding the world and that’s what we’ll analyze in this course. The goal is to look at the different hypotheses that broadly emerge out of the Marxian tradition and see the extent to which they can be supported both theoretically and empirically.
