If we do, we will see a world that is rather different from the one presented to us by a remarkably effective ideological system, a world that is much uglier, often horrifying. We will also learn that our own actions, or passive acquiescence, contribute quite substantially to misery and oppression, and perhaps eventual global destruction. But there is a brighter side. We are fortunate to live in a society that is not only rich and powerful—and hence, as any student of history would expect, dangerous and destructive—but also relatively free and open, perhaps more so than any other, though this may change if the reactionary jingoists who have misappropriated the term “conservative” succeed in their current project of diminishing civil liberties, strengthening the power of the state, and protecting it from public scrutiny. For those who are relatively wealthy and privileged, a very large sector of a society as rich as ours, there are ample opportunities to discover the truth about who we are and what we do in the world. Furthermore, by international standards the state is limited at home in its capacity to coerce. Hence those who enjoy a measure of wealth and privilege are free to act in many ways, without undue fear of state terror, to bring about crucial changes in policy and even more fundamental institutional changes. We are fortunate, perhaps uniquely so, in the range of opportunities we enjoy for free inquiry and effective action. The significance of these facts can hardly be exaggerated.     Beneath the Surface: Argentine-United States Relations as Perón Assumed the Presidency Vivian Reed June 5, 2009 HST 600 Latin American Seminar Dr. John Rector 1 Juan Domingo Perón was elected President of Argentina on February 24, 1946,1 just as the world was beginning to recover from World War II and experiencing the first traces of the Cold War. The relationship between Argentina and the United States was both strained and uncertain at this time. The newly elected Perón and his controversial wife, Eva, represented Argentina. The United States’ presence in Argentina for the preceding year was primarily presented through Ambassador Spruille Braden.2 These men had vastly differing perspectives and visions for Argentina. The contest between them was indicative of the relationship between the two nations. Beneath the public and well-documented contest between Perón and United States under the leadership of Braden and his successors, there was another player whose presence was almost unnoticed. The impact of this player was subtlety effective in normalizing relations between Argentina and the United States. The player in question was former United States President Herbert Hoover, who paid a visit to Argentina and Perón in June of 1946. This paper will attempt to describe the nature of Argentine-United States relations in mid-1946. Hoover’s mission and insights will be examined. In addition, the impact of his visit will be assessed in light of unfolding events and the subsequent historiography. The most interesting aspect of the historiography is the marked absence of this episode in studies of Perón and Argentina3 even though it involved a former United States President and the relations with 1 Alexander, 53.

In a speech in 2014 at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu called the Kurds ³a nation of fighters [who] have proved political commitment and are worthy of independence´a statement that angered Baghdad at that time. He also reaffirmed his stance during a meeting with a delegation from the US Congress, on August 13, 2017, stressing that he backs Iraqi Kurdistan¶s independence from Iraq, because the Kurdish people are brave and loyal to the West, as well as they share the same values with Israel. On the other hand, the Kurds cheered those remarks by raising the Israeli flag during their demonstrations in favor of independence in Erbil and several European capitals, where there are Kurdish communities such as Paris, Brussels and Berlin.In addition, several Israeli politicians declared their support for the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan from Iraq.

Routledge, 2017. – Latin America in the Vortex of Social Change Development and Resistance Dynamics, by Henry Veltmeyer & James Petras. Routledge, 2019. The 2000s witnessed a tremendous surge for Latin America’s left-leaning social and political movements, initiated by the rise to power of Hugo Chávez in the Venezuelan presidential election of 1998. The books under review here address from a Marxist perspective the historical, political-economic, and political-sociological contexts of Latin America’s development and leftism. The Class Struggle in Latin America (CSLA) scrutinizes the changing dynamics of class struggle against the background of the rise and demise of neoliberalism in Latin America. According to James Petras and Henry Veltmeyer, the changing dynamics of Latin America’s class struggle are largely contingent on the shift of the locus of class struggle from land and labour to dispersed communities representing indigenous people, adding to the increasing prominence of precarious, unemployed, and informal workers. Neoliberalism was also accompanied by the ascendancy of extractive capital and China as catalysts for the primary commodities boom of the 2000s. In explaining the negative socioeconomic and ecological impacts of rising extractivism (or excessive dependency on extractive capital), Petras and Veltmeyer refer to David Harvey’s notion of accumulation by dispossession, understood as a process by which popular sectors are forced to abandon their communities.

However, Israel's support of reactionary governments and other groups in Central America is nothing new. That nation has provided arms to the military, advice and training to police forces, and sophisticated counter-insurgency techniques to Central American dictatorships for at least 30 years. Israel has not broadcast its role in Central America, nor has the mainstream US media considered Tel Aviv's actions in the region worthy of consistent coverage. Torn between gaining the good will of the American right-wing, on the one hand, and with offending liberals, on the other, Israel has opted for a low profile. In part, Tel Aviv's reaction to the Iran-contragate revelations stems from fear that the full story of Israel's role in Central America will become widely known.

On 31 October 2005, The Guardian published an interview with Noam Chomsky, prophet of coffee- table anti-imperialism and verbal conjuror extraordinaire, carried out by the journalist Emma Brockes, which was highly embarrassing to him. The interview exposed him as having revisionist views in relation to the Srebrenica massacre, which he described as ‘probably overstated’ and which he has minimised at various times and in various ways.
