Box 70 Koedoeskop 0361 Fax: (014) 785-0611 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The timing of the survey was during the rainy seasons of March & April. The study site was extensively browsed and grazed by game over the past few years, making it slightly difficult to determine the species composition and vegetation structure normally present on this proposed development area. The site is situated in Limpopo on the Farm Kwikstaart 431 KQ portion 2, Koedoeskop District. The area is a flat undulating plane. The altitude of the site is between 915-960 m above sea level. The mean annual rainfall measured at Koedoeskop Weather Station is 675mm. The rainy season is predominantly from October to April with driest months being June to August. The mean annual temperature measured at Koedoeskop Weather Station is 21◦ with extreme maximum and minimum temperature of -8.5◦ and 45◦ respectively. This year however, was an exceptionally good rainy season with the Crocodile River flooding its banks in low places. According to Mucina and Rutherford (2006) the study site occurs in the Dwaalboom Thornveld with intrusion of Sandy Bushveld. Acacia tortilis, A nilotica and A karroo dominate the Thornveld whereas Acacia nigrescens, A erubescens and Combretum species occurs on the sandy soils. -

Robin Lyle CONGRATULATIONS To Charles Haddad for obtaining his PhD from the Univer- sity of the Free State. The title of his study was “Advances in the systematics and ecology of the African Corinnidae spiders (Arachnida: Araneae), with emphasis on the Casti- aneirinae”. This is a very comprehensive study and deals with two aspects of the Castianeirinae, namely their ecol- ogy as well as their systematics, and it is a very important contribution towards our knowledge of this family of spi- ders, especially in the Afrotropical Region. An illustrated key to all the genera is provided as well as a phylogenetic analysis of the relationships of the Afrotropical Castianeiri- nae. Charles revised the eight genera of the subfamily Castianeirinae known from the Afrotropical Region and described two genera as new to science. He studied 62 species, of which 37 are new species and 20 redescribed for the first time. -

The Spider Club News Editor: Joan Faiola MARCH 2013 - Vol.29 #1 The Big Bug Expo at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden This expo of huge bugs displayed throughout the garden in various unexpected spots caused quite a stir. Imagine an enormous mantid leering at you from beneath a cycad or this spider dwarfing your two year old son! The expo was planned to run from November 2012 to January 2013 but if the garden can find a sponsor they would like to extend this awesome display for as long as possible. Members of the public were astonished to find these creatures blending with the garden’s landscape and it is one of those rare ventures that contribute to the garden’s efforts to raise awareness of the value of nature and biodiversity to all our lives. A Checklist of the Spiders of Tanzania

Russell-Smith 1, Bailiffs Cottage, Doddington, Sittingbourne Kent ME9 0JU, UK [email protected] ABSTRACT A checklist of all published spider species from Tanzania is provided. For each species, the localities from which it was recorded are noted and a gazetteer of the geographic coordinates of all but a small minority of these localities is included. The results are discussed in terms of family species richness, the completeness of our knowledge of the spider fauna of this country and the likely biases in family composition. Keywords: Araneae, East Africa, faunistics, biodiversity INTRODUCTION Students of spiders are very fortunate in having a complete online catalogue that is continuously updated—the World Spider Catalog (http://www.wsc.nmbe.ch/). The catalogue also provides full text of virtually all the relevant systematic literature, allowing ready access to taxonomic accounts for all species. However, researchers interested in the spiders of a particular country face two problems in using the catalogue: 1. For species that have a widespread distribution, the catalogue often lists only the region (e.g. “East Africa”) or even the continent (“Africa”) from which it is recorded 2. The catalogue itself provides no information on the actual locations from which a species is recorded. There is thus a need for more detailed country checklists, particularly those outside the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions where most arachnologists have traditionally been based. In addition to providing an updated list of species from the country concerned, such catalogues can provide details of the actual locations from which each species has been recorded, together with geographical coordinates when these are available. -

Box 339, Bloemfontein 9300, South Africa Invertebrates include more than 80% of all animals, yet they are severely under-represented in studies of southern African diversity. Site biodiversity estimates that do not consider invertebrates, not only omit the greatest part of what they are attempting to measure, but also ignore major contributors to essential ecosystem processes. All available information on spider species distribution in the South African Savanna Biome was compiled. This is the largest biome in the country,occupying over one third of the surface area.A total of 1230 species represented by 381genera and 62 families are known from the biome. The last decade has seen an exponential growth in the knowledge of the group in South Africa, but there certainly are several more species that have to be discovered, and the distribution patterns of those listed are partly unknown. Information is summarized for all quarter degree squares of the biome and reveals considerable inequalities in knowledge. At a large scale the eastern region is much better surveyed than the western parts, but at smaller scales throughout the region, several areas have little information. -

Dippenaar e-mail: [email protected] Postal Address: Private Bag X1106, Sovenga 0727, Republic of South Africa ABSTRACT As part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA), spiders were collected from all the field layers in the Polokwane Nature Reserve (Limpopo Province, South Africa) over a period of a year (2005–2006) using four collecting methods. Six habitat types were sampled: Acacia tortillis open savanna; A. rehmanniana woodland, false grassland, riverine and sweet thorn thicket, granite outcrop; and Aloe marlothii thicket. A total of 13 821 spiders were collected (using sweep netting, tree beating, active searching and pitfall trapping) represented by 39 families, 156 determined genera and 275 species. The most diverse families are the Thomisidae (42 spp.), Araneidae (39 spp.) and Salticidae (29 spp.). A total of 84 spp. (30.5%) were web builders and 191 spp. (69.5%) wanderers. In the Polokwane Nature Reserve, 13.75% of South African species are presently protected. Nothing was known on the biology or life history of this species, except that it produced spectacular flowers between September and October. A List of Spider Species Found in the Addo Elephant National Park, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa
KOEDOE - African Protected Area Conservation and Science ISSN: (Online) 2071-0771, (Print) 0075-6458 Page 1 of 13 Checklist A list of spider species found in the Addo Elephant National Park, Eastern Cape province, South Africa Authors: The knowledge of spiders in the Eastern Cape province lags behind that of most other South Anna S. Dippenaar- African provinces. The Eastern Cape province is renowned for its conservation areas, as the Schoeman1,2 Linda Wiese3 largest part of the Albany Centre of Endemism falls within this province. This article provides Stefan H. Foord4 a checklist for the spider fauna of the Addo Elephant National Park, one of the most prominent Charles R. Haddad5 conservation areas of the Eastern Cape, to detail the species found in the park and determine their conservation status and level of endemicity based on their known distribution. Various Affiliations: 1Biosystematics: Arachnology, collecting methods were used to sample spiders between 1974 and 2016. Forty-seven families ARC – Plant Health and that include 184 genera and 276 species were recorded. Thomisidae (39 spp.), Araneidae Protection, Queenswood, (39 spp.), Salticidae (35 spp.) and Theridiidae (25 spp.) were the most species-rich families, South Africa while 14 families were only represented by a single species. 2Department of Zoology Conservation implications: A total of 12.7% of the South African spider fauna and 32.9% of the and Entomology, University Eastern Cape fauna are protected in the park; 26.4% are South African endemics, and of these, of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa 3.6% are Eastern Cape endemics. South African National Survey of Arachnida: a Checklist of the Spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) of the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa

In total, 32 families represented by 108 genera and 136 species have been collected so far. The most species-rich families are the Affiliations: Salticidae (20 spp.) and Thomisidae (18 spp.), followed by the Gnaphosidae and Araneidae 1 Biosystematics Arachnology, (11 spp. each), while nine families are represented by singletons. The free-living wandering ARC – Plant Protection Research Institute, spiders represent 97 spp., while 39 spp. are web-builders. Information on spider guilds, South Africa endemicity value and conservation status are provided.
