This slender coastal strip is defined by its South India and Kerala landscape: almost km of glorious Arabian Sea coast and beaches; a languid network of glistening backwaters; and the spice- and tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats, dotted with fiercely protected wildlife reserves and cool hill stations such as Munnar. Just setting foot on this swathe of soul- soothing, South India and Kerala green will slow your subcontinental stride to a blissed-out amble. Kerala is a world away from the frenzy of the rest of India, its long, fascinating backstory illuminated by historically evocative cities like Kochi Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram Trivandrum. News Letter of Diocese of Kurnool, November 2019
BISHOP'S MESSAGE The Church celebrates Holy Men and Women throughout the Year on various saint days but the Solemnity of All Saints is, when the Church honours every saint and those officially known and honoured on the Church calendar, and saints known only to God. While we have information about many saints, and we honour them on specific days, there are many unknown or unsung saints, who may have been forgotten, or never been honoured specifically. On All Saints Day, we celebrate these holy individuals, and ask for their prayers and intercessions. The feast was instituted by Pope Gregory III (731-741), when he consecrated a chapel to all the martyrs in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Gregory ordered his priests to celebrate the Feast of All Saints annually. This celebration was originally confined to the diocese of Rome, but Pope Gregory IV (827- 844) extended the feast to the entire Church and ordered it to be celebrated on 1st November. The Catholic Catechism concisely describes this communion among believers, by which we are connected to Christ, and thus to one another: “Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness. They do not cease to intercede with the Father for us...So by their fraternal concern our weaknesses are greatly helped. “Those who have fallen asleep: first the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, that through their prayers and supplications God would receive our petition.... (Catechetical Lecture 23: 9) On 1st of November when the Church celebrates, the Solemnity of All Saints who are already, on account of their holy life on this earth, are in the presence of God. -

Around 250 people have been killed, 2.5 million people forced from their homes and standing crops destroyed. The trading and cotton-growing border town of Kurnool was one of the worst affected areas. As of October 7th, the government had opened 1,506 relief camps where 827,000 people have been evacuated. Many flooded villages remain difficult to access and people have yet to receive assistance. ACT members the Churches’ Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in India (UELCI) and Lutheran World Service India, (LWSI) and are coordinating their responses to define their different operational areas and target communities. CASA’s proposes 2-month emergency response to assist 7,500 families with food, non-food relief items and temporary shelter (plastic sheets) in Bagalkot and Bellary Districts of Karnataka State, and Krishna and Guntur Districts, as well as Nandyal and Kurnool areas in Andhra Pradesh; UELCI’s proposed 3-month response is to assist 7,500 families also with food, non-food relief items and shelter (materials for repair of damaged huts) in 80 villages (9 mandal/blocks) in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh, These are different locations to those targeted by CASA. -

Monsoons coupled with a depression over the Bay of Bengal and a subsequent depression over Gujarat have led to heavy rains causing floods in these states. In a large part of these states, electricity supplies have been badly affected and hand pumps/wells have been contaminated. Standing crops have been destroyed. The sources of livelihood of people have been adversely affected and there is large scale loss of personal and public property. People belonging to marginalized sections are the worst off with few coping mechanisms. The living conditions in the affected areas and relief camps are appalling and people lack basic necessities. Currently the state governments are struggling to cope with the situation. ACT members Churches Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) and United Evangelical Lutheran Church in India (UELCI) are assisting the most vulnerable of the affected in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat through the provision of emergency relief food and non-food items, temporary shelter and rehabilitation in the form of repairs to houses and schools. ACT member the Lutheran World Service India (LWSI) is presently not planning to respond in the areas mentioned above but, may respond to a future flood emergency during the current monsoon season. -
