The Significance of Lesslie Newbigin for Mission in the New Millennium Michael W. Goheen A Remarkable Life Bishop Lesslie Newbigin is one of the most important missiological and theological thinkers of the twentieth century. The American church historian Geoffrey Wainwright, from Duke University, once remarked that when the history of the church in the twentieth century comes to be written, if the church historians know their job, Newbigin will have to be considered one of top ten or twelve theological figures of the century. In his book, he honours Newbigin’s significant contribution by portraying him in patristic terms as a “father of the church.”1 Newbigin was first and foremost a missionary; he spent forty years of his life in India. But he was much more: he was a theologian, biblical scholar, apologist, ecumenical leader, author, and missiologist. The breadth and depth of his experience and his contribution to the ecumenical and missionary history of the church in the twentieth century have been “scarcely paralleled.”2 Newbigin was born in England in 1909. He was converted to Jesus Christ during his university days at Cambridge. He was married, ordained in the Church of Scotland, and set sail for India as a missionary in 1936. He spent the next eleven years as a district missionary in Kanchipuram. He played an important role in clearing a theological impasse that led to the formation of the Church of South India (CSI)—a church made up of Congregationalists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, and Methodists. He served as bishop of Madurai for the next twelve years. -

Karl Barth’s Theology of Joy John Mark Capper Selwyn College Submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy University of Cambridge April 1998 Karl Barth’s Theology of Joy John Mark Capper, Selwyn College Cambridge, April 1998 Joy is a recurrent theme in the Church Dogmatics of Karl Barth but it is one which is under-explored. In order to ascertain reasons for this lack, the work of six scholars is explored with regard to the theme of joy, employing the useful though limited “motifs” suggested by Hunsinger. That the revelation of God has a trinitarian framework, as demonstrated by Barth in CD I, and that God as Trinity is joyful, helps to explain Barth’s understanding of theology as a “joyful science”. By close attention to Barth’s treatment of the perfections of God (CD II.1), the link which Barth makes with glory and eternity is explored, noting the far-reaching sweep which joy is allowed by contrast with the related theme of beauty. Divine joy is discerned as the response to glory in the inner life of the Trinity, and as such is the quality of God being truly Godself. Joy is seen to be “more than a perfection” and is basic to God’s self-revelation and human response. A dialogue with Jonathan Edwards challenges Barth’s restricted use of beauty in his theology, and highlights the innovation Barth makes by including election in his doctrine of God. In the context of Barth’s anthropology, paying close attention to his treatment of “being in encounter” (CD III.2), there is an examination of the significance of gladness as the response to divine glory in the life of humanity, and as the crowning of full and free humanness. -

Amen. 4 A BRIEF HISTORY OF MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE Madras Christian College traces its origin to the General Assembly School founded by the Rev. John Anderson, a Missionary from the Church of Scotland on 3rd April 1837. Anderson was a pioneer in introducing English medium education in South India. He was ably assisted by Rev. Johnston, Rev. Braidwood and Margaret Locher Anderson. Rev. William Miller who arrived in 1862 upgraded the school to a college by adding F.A. and B.A., courses in 1865 and 1867. -

B50FF03 Introduction to Contextual Theology Bachelor of Divinity Degree Pacific Theological College Semester 1A, 2018 Course Lecturer: Dr Richard Davis, [email protected] Course Description This course aims to provide students with an introduction to the study and practice of theology. It will look at what theology is, who does theology, where it is done, and for what purpose. The traditional sources of theological reflection, such as the Bible, traditions, experience and reason will be examined. The contextuality of all theologies will be stressed, and the relativity of traditional Western theology will be exposed, and newer approaches to theology will be explored, including liberation theologies of the two-thirds world. Students will be encouraged to bring a Pacific focus to their own work, drawing on various models of contextual theology with a view to identifying, describing and critically analysing the methods that undergird such models. Objectives By the end of the course students should be able to: Be aware of and describe the context in which they do theology Define what theology is and understand the role of the theologian Describe several sources for doing theology Appreciate several different models of doing contextual theology See how key doctrines have been interpreted through contextual methods Method of Teaching A combination of lectures, readings, writing and discussion. Assessment Assessment will be as set out below, with one essay, class participation, and an exam. All assessment must engage with the class materials, readings, and additional scholarly materials (books, journal articles, and generally not online materials). Every effort should be made to write correct English in the essay and exam. -
The Coronation Bible a Fly-Past Over Buckingham Palace, and a Gun Salute Fired at Noon
ISSUE No. 37, June 2006 ISSN 0840-5565 n 7 June of this year, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will officially celebrate her eightieth birthday Owith the Trooping of the Colour ceremony, The Coronation Bible a fly-past over Buckingham Palace, and a gun salute fired at noon. In this country few will probably be aware of the festivities, but many would still acknowledge the tireless efforts of this royal octogenarian on behalf of her country and the Commonwealth. In the holdings of the Fisher Library is a handsome souvenir of the Queen’s reign, the so-called “Coronation Bible,” printed at the Oxford University Press under the direction of Charles Batey in 953. Batey had worked at the Press since 929, and assumed the role of Printer to the University in 946. One of his great passions in that capacity was to preserve and make better known the ancient types that had been used at the venerable Press throughout its history. The crisp, clean font chosen for the Coronation Bible is a credit to his expertise in this field. The composition of the Bible actually began in February of 952, shortly after the death of King George VI; among its many distinguishing characteristics is the fact that the entire book was the work of a single compositor. While the vast majority of the Bibles in this edition were printed on regular paper and expressly intended for pulpit use, an additional twenty-five were printed on too bulky to be used gracefully, while the of Oxford University Press in 930. -
A Critical Analysis of Anglican and Roman Catholic Bilateral Relations from a Theological Perspective
ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF ANGLICAN AND ROMAN CATHOLIC BILATERAL RELATIONS FROM A THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE James N. Amanze Abstract ___________________________________________________________________________ This paper is a critical examination of Anglican-Roman Catholic bilateral relations from a theological perspective. The main argument of the paper is that while the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches consider themselves to be in a special relationship as a result of a number of theological agreements reached over the past forty years aimed at bringing them closer together than ever before, they are far from achieving visible church unity. The achievements made over the years, in the form of agreed theological texts have, from time to time, been derailed by subtle theological differences between the two church traditions. This can best be described in the words of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin “One step forward, two steps back”. The paper concludes that given the small amount of progress, which is pushed back by a large amount of setbacks, church unity is unattainable. Introduction Ecumenism, that is, the activities to achieve church unity after the 16th Century Protestant Reformation in Germany has been the hallmark of the church in the Twentieth and Twenty First Centuries. Philip Potter, once General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, noted that the ecumenical movement was “the means by which the churches, which form the house, the oikos of God, are seeking so live and witness before all peoples that the whole oikoumene may become the oikos of God through the crucified and risen Christ in the power of the life- giving Spirit.”70 This is in line with the views of the Decree on Ecumenism (Unitatis Redintegratio) of the Second Vatican Council, according to which “The Church established by Christ the Lord is, indeed, one and unique. -

Theological Education and Participation in Global Mission Israel Selvanayagam An Affirmation Let me start with a basic affirmation: whatever may be the side effects the primary purpose of theological education is creative and relevant participation in mission in all its dimensions. I am tempted to revise the starting lines of St Paul’s famous poem on love (1 Cor. 13). Accordingly, I may read and speak classical languages, but if I do not have a passionate commitment to mission, I am a sounding gong or a clanging cymbal. I may have the gift of textual analysis and hermeneutics and the knowledge of every philosophical truth; I may have more than one postgraduate degree in Theology; but if I have no inner urge to share the love of God in Christ with others, I am nothing. I may give all I possess to the needy, I may give my body to be burnt in struggles for justice and liberation, but if I have no regard for the salvation of the whole humanity and creation, I gain nothing by it. If this revision sends any clear signals, then we need to revise traditional understandings of theology and theological education. I don’t claim like Thomas Aquinas that ‘Theology is taught by God, teaches of God, and leads to God’. Theology is human talk or reasoning about God: not in the sense of ‘search after reality’ but that of ‘response to the historic reality of revelation’. Nor can I accept Anselm’s definition of theology as ‘faith seeking understanding’, because our two millennia of ‘seeking’ in this regard have not led us to a more clear understanding. -
