September/October 2014 at BFI Southbank Al Pacino in Conversation with Salome & Wilde Salome, Jim Jarmusch and Friends, Peter Lorre, Night Will Fall, The Wednesday Play at 50 and Fela Kuti Al Pacino’s Salomé and Wilde Salomé based on Oscar Wilde’s play, will screen at BFI Southbank on Sunday 21 September and followed by a Q&A with Academy Award winner Al Pacino and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain that will be broadcast live via satellite to cinemas across the UK and Ireland. This unique event will be hosted by Stephen Fry. Jim Jarmusch was one of the key filmmakers involved in the US indie scene that flourished from the mid-70s to the late 90s. He has succeeded in remaining true to the spirit of independence, with films such as Stranger Than Paradise (1984), Dead Man (1995) and, most recently, Only Lovers Left Alive (2013). With the re-release of Down By Law (1986) as a centrepiece for the season, we will also look at films that have inspired Jarmusch A Century of Chinese Cinema: New Directions will celebrate the sexy, provocative and daring work by acclaimed contemporary filmmakers such as Wong Kar-wai, Jia Zhangke, Wang Xiaoshuai and Tsai Ming-liang. These directors built on the innovations of the New Wave era and sparked a renewed global interest in Chinese cinema into the new millennium André Singer’s powerful new documentary Night Will Fall (2014) reveals for the first time the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the efforts made by army and newsreel cameramen to document the almost unbelievable scenes encountered there.

  • 7 Sconosciuti a El Royale (2018) Un Puzzle Da Ricomporre Tessera Dopo Tessera, Che Trasuda Citazioni, Gioca Con Lo Spettatore E Regala Una Strepitosa Colonna Sonora
Genere Thriller durata 141 minuti. Produzione USA 2018.

  • Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES A Note from the Director The seed of Small Axe was sown 11 years ago, soon after my first film, Hunger. Initially, I had conceived of it as a TV series, but as it developed, I realized these stories had to stand alone as original films yet at the same time be part of a collective. After all, Small Axe refers to an African proverb that means together we are strong. The anthology, anchored in the West Indian experience in London, is a celebration of all that that community has succeeded in achieving against the odds. To me, it is a love letter to Black resilience, triumph, hope, music, joy and love as well as to friendship and family. Oh, and let’s not forget about food too! I recall each of these stories being told to me either by my parents, my aunt, and by experiencing racial discrimination myself growing up in the 70s and 80s. These are all our stories. I feel personally touched by each and every one of them. My five senses were awoken writing with Courttia Newland and Alastair Siddons. Images, smells, textures and old customs came flooding back. All five films take place between the late 60s and mid 80s. They are just as much a comment on the present moment as they were then. Although they are about the past, they are very much concerned with the present. A commentary on where we were, where we are and where we want to go. When the Cannes Film Festival selected Mangrove and Lovers Rock earlier this year, I dedicated both to George Floyd and all the other Black people that have been murdered, seen or unseen, because of who they are in the US, UK and elsewhere.

  • Vibing with Blackness: Critical Considerations of Black Panther and Exceptional Black Positionings
arts Article Vibing with Blackness: Critical Considerations of Black Panther and Exceptional Black Positionings Derilene (Dee) Marco Media Studies Department, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg 2000, South Africa; [email protected] Received: 12 September 2018; Accepted: 15 November 2018; Published: 21 November 2018 Abstract: This article considers different ways in which Blackness is represented as exceptional in the 2018 film Black Panther. It also considers other iterations of Black visibility and legibility in the current popular culture context which appears to privilege Black narratives in interesting ways. The essay uses conceptual lenses from diaspora studies, Afro science fiction and Black feminist studies to critically engage the film and to critically question the notion of Black exceptionalism. Keywords: Afrofuturism; blackness; Black exceptionalism; cinema; post-apartheid; Black Panther film 1. Introduction How do you know I’m real? I’m not real. I come to you as myth, because that’s what black people are—myths. Ra(2017) Gabi Ngcobo holds the position as the first Black curator of the Berlin Biennale. In various articles from South African and other global publications, the overarching message about the Biennale was its (and its curator’s) exceptionalism. This exceptionalism, it seems, is to be read as a slightly nervous celebration of Ngcobo as Black and an equally anxious reception of her all black team and a host of seemingly ‘unknown artists’ who were on the show. Ngcobo herself confronts this geographical and psychological positional through the following—a position that I wish to use in this article as a basis and space for reflection: ..
