Welcome to Picasso at the Lapin Agile! We're Thrilled to Kick Off 2017 With
FEBRUARY 2017 WELCOME JIM COX elcome to Picasso at the Lapin Agile! We’re thrilled to kick off 2017 with this funny, fascinating, and endlessly W surprising play. As we begin a new year, we also celebrate the phenomenal successes of 2016. Last year, the Globe broke box office records with hits like Meteor Shower (another Steve Martin comedy) and our acclaimed productions of October Sky and Sense and Sensibility. It was also an outstanding year for philanthropy. Individual donors gave generously to support our mission, and the Globe reaped the benefit of major foundation and government support. Our Arts Engagement Department successfully launched a slate of new programs funded in part by The James Irvine Foundation’s New California Arts Fund, and the National Endowment for the Arts awarded the Globe a major grant to support new play development. In every way, 2016 was a banner year for The Old Globe. We couldn’t imagine a better way to start 2017 than Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Not only does the production mark the welcome return of writer Steve Martin to the Globe, it pairs him with his longtime collaborator—and our Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director—Barry Edelstein. Here, Barry shepherds an all-star cast featuring returning Globe favorites alongside talented performers making their Globe debuts. 2016 will be a tough act to top, but this show bodes well for another banner year of great theatre in Balboa Park. We hope to see you often at the Globe in the coming year! MISSION STATEMENT The mission of The Old Globe is to preserve, strengthen, and advance American theatre by: creating theatrical experiences of the highest professional standards; producing and presenting works of exceptional merit, designed to reach current and future audiences; ensuring diversity and balance in programming; providing an environment for the growth and education of theatre professionals, audiences, and the community at large. -
September/October 2014 at BFI Southbank
September/October 2014 at BFI Southbank Al Pacino in Conversation with Salome & Wilde Salome, Jim Jarmusch and Friends, Peter Lorre, Night Will Fall, The Wednesday Play at 50 and Fela Kuti Al Pacino’s Salomé and Wilde Salomé based on Oscar Wilde’s play, will screen at BFI Southbank on Sunday 21 September and followed by a Q&A with Academy Award winner Al Pacino and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain that will be broadcast live via satellite to cinemas across the UK and Ireland. This unique event will be hosted by Stephen Fry. Jim Jarmusch was one of the key filmmakers involved in the US indie scene that flourished from the mid-70s to the late 90s. He has succeeded in remaining true to the spirit of independence, with films such as Stranger Than Paradise (1984), Dead Man (1995) and, most recently, Only Lovers Left Alive (2013). With the re-release of Down By Law (1986) as a centrepiece for the season, we will also look at films that have inspired Jarmusch A Century of Chinese Cinema: New Directions will celebrate the sexy, provocative and daring work by acclaimed contemporary filmmakers such as Wong Kar-wai, Jia Zhangke, Wang Xiaoshuai and Tsai Ming-liang. These directors built on the innovations of the New Wave era and sparked a renewed global interest in Chinese cinema into the new millennium André Singer’s powerful new documentary Night Will Fall (2014) reveals for the first time the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the efforts made by army and newsreel cameramen to document the almost unbelievable scenes encountered there. -

Amid the darkness looming over the nation following Sunday's shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., Broadway's brightest stars shone at the 70th annual Tony Awards at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Host James Corden and the night's biggest winners paid emotional tribute to the 49 people killed in the attack and the more than 50 people wounded. Earlier in the day, organizers had released a statement saying that the show would go on and be dedicated to the families and friends of those affected by the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. "Our hearts are heavy for the unimaginable tragedy that happened last night in Orlando," the organizers said. Corden, host of The Late Late Show, opened the ceremony with a brief message about the mass shooting: "Good evening. All around the world, people are trying to come to terms with the horrific events that took place in Orlando this morning.
