The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Journal 2018
The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Journal 2018 Through subtle shades of color, the cover design represents the layers of richness and diversity that flourish within minority communities. The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Journal 2018 A collection of scholarly research by fellows of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program Preface We are proud to present to you the 2018 edition of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Journal. For more than 30 years, the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) program has endeavored to promote diversity in the faculty of higher education, specifically by supporting thousands of students from underrepresented minority groups in their goal of obtaining PhDs. With the MMUF Journal, we provide an additional opportunity for students to experience academia through exposure to the publishing process. In addition to providing an audience for student work, the journal offers an introduction to the publishing process, including peer review and editor-guided revision of scholarly work. For the majority of students, the MMUF Journal is their first experience in publishing a scholarly article. The 2018 Journal features writing by 27 authors from 22 colleges and universities that are part of the program’s member institutions. The scholarship represented in the journal ranges from research conducted under the MMUF program, introductions to senior theses, and papers written for university courses. The work presented here includes scholarship from a wide range of disciples, from history to linguistics to political science. The papers presented here will take the reader on a journey. Readers will travel across the U.S., from Texas to South Carolina to California, and to countries ranging from Brazil and Nicaragua to Germany and South Korea, as they learn about theater, race relations, and the refugee experience. -
Captain America
The Star-spangled Avenger Adapted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Captain America first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (Cover dated March 1941), from Marvel Comics' 1940s predecessor, Timely Comics, and was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. For nearly all of the character's publication history, Captain America was the alter ego of Steve Rogers , a frail young man who was enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum in order to aid the United States war effort. Captain America wears a costume that bears an American flag motif, and is armed with an indestructible shield that can be thrown as a weapon. An intentionally patriotic creation who was often depicted fighting the Axis powers. Captain America was Timely Comics' most popular character during the wartime period. After the war ended, the character's popularity waned and he disappeared by the 1950s aside from an ill-fated revival in 1953. Captain America was reintroduced during the Silver Age of comics when he was revived from suspended animation by the superhero team the Avengers in The Avengers #4 (March 1964). Since then, Captain America has often led the team, as well as starring in his own series. Captain America was the first Marvel Comics character adapted into another medium with the release of the 1944 movie serial Captain America . Since then, the character has been featured in several other films and television series, including Chris Evans in 2011’s Captain America and The Avengers in 2012. The creation of Captain America In 1940, writer Joe Simon conceived the idea for Captain America and made a sketch of the character in costume. -
Marvel/ Dc Secret Files A.R.G.U.S / S.H.I.E.L.D
MARVEL/ DC SECRET FILES During these sessions you will take place of one of these superheroes from both worlds to discuss the take on action, the strategy, explain the reasons to proceed from certain way and giving enough intelligence and ideas to approach conflicted countries and regions where certain heroes from an specific nationality couldn’t enter due to political motives. OVERVIEW Dangerous objects and devices have fallen into the hands of both Marvel and DC villains. It is the mission of the UN to assign rescue missions of these objects located in different parts of both universes to avoid a possible collision of worlds and being used against humanity. The General Assembly of the United Nations and the Security Council has given special powers to heroes of different countries (and universes) to take action on behalf of the governments of the world to avoid a catastrophe and to be able to fight with the opposing forces that have taken possession of these devices, threatening humanity with them and disrupting world peace forming a Special Force. Recon missions have been done by Black Widow, Catwoman, Hawkeye and Plastic Man and we have gathered information of different objects that are guarded by villains in different locations of both universes. Some in the Marvel universe and others in the DC universe. Each artifact has been enclosed in a magic bubble that prevents its use to any being that has possession of it. But this enchantment created by Doctor Strange and Doctor Fate has expiration time. Within 48 hours, it will be deactivated and anyone who has any of these devices in their possession will be able to freely use them. -

Marvel Summit DMUN-2018
Background Guide Marvel Summit DMUN-2018 Executive Board Aditya Singh(Chair) Kushal Mital (Co-Chair) Arushi Tripathi (Moderator) Committee Overview:- 24th April, The world, nay, THE UNIVERSE is in chaos. Fathers saw their sons turn to dust, Kings vanished so did friends and their family. The Avengers have never been in such a situation, dust all around them, realizing….. They lost. They lost half the universe. The Mad Titan Thanos has carried out the iconic snap! But that is not all, fate seems to have different plans for some. A interdimensional rift caused due to the Space Stone opened a temporary portal which caused The elite Mutant Race of the XMEN to be drawn in into the universe. The mind and Soul Gems have “enlightened” Professor Xavier and Logan with the events which took place and potentially life changing truth, a secret which could be the key to avenging the universe. So what will it be - The Mutants Untied with the Avengers or an outright war for the universe and against the Last survivor of Titan? Remember - “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” 1 Committee will take place at a freeze date of 30th April, When Anthony Stark meets Professor Xavier. Classes of enhanced humans:- Skill Skill heroes are completely normal humans who have reached proficiency with a specific type of skill which could deem them a lethal weapon in their own right. Black Widow, Hawkeye and Okoye come under this class. Tech These are either machines themselves or humans in suits of armor that make them extremely powerful. They may also be tech heroes in case they are assisted by technological weapons. -
The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs
I The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs: Lost Races and Racism in American Popular Culture James R. Nesteby Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree in Doctor of Philosophy August 1978 Approved: © 1978 JAMES RONALD NESTEBY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ¡ ¡ in Abstract The Tarzan series of Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), beginning with the All-Story serialization in 1912 of Tarzan of the Apes (1914 book), reveals deepseated racism in the popular imagination of early twentieth-century American culture. The fictional fantasies of lost races like that ruled by La of Opar (or Atlantis) are interwoven with the realities of racism, particularly toward Afro-Americans and black Africans. In analyzing popular culture, Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk-Literature (1932) and John G. Cawelti's Adventure, Mystery, and Romance (1976) are utilized for their indexing and formula concepts. The groundwork for examining explanations of American culture which occur in Burroughs' science fantasies about Tarzan is provided by Ray R. Browne, publisher of The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of American Culture, and by Gene Wise, author of American Historical Explanations (1973). The lost race tradition and its relationship to racism in American popular fiction is explored through the inner earth motif popularized by John Cleves Symmes' Symzonla: A Voyage of Discovery (1820) and Edgar Allan Poe's The narrative of A. Gordon Pym (1838); Burroughs frequently uses the motif in his perennially popular romances of adventure which have made Tarzan of the Apes (Lord Greystoke) an ubiquitous feature of American culture. -

A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism. -
