The Directorate-General of Industrial and Technological Affairs has been gathering and processing these statistics since 1972; its first communication to the Council, d;· .ed 19 July 1972 (document COM(72)850), already included a statistical appendix on the position of the aerospace sector (market and production facilities). In subsequent years1 it became possible to carry out a more detailed analysis, owing, in particular, to the cooperation of the aviation industry associations in each country, which actively helped the departtnents of the Commission in an annual survey of fi.rms in the sector. In 1974, 47 countries whose unit airline traffic exceeded 1000 million passenger-kilometres together accounted for 97•2% of the total. US airlines accounted for 40·1% of the traffic, followed by the USSR with 16·6%; the UK was ousted from third place by Japan. It will be seen that traffic on the European airlines continued to grow slowly in 1974, whereas United States traffic remained steady overall although international traffic fell sharply. However, the combined intra-European and domestic traffic of the European airlines (AEA) in 1974 amounted to less than 20% of United States domestic· traffic. On the other hand, the intercontinental traffic of the ABA airlines was equivalent to 167% of United States international traffic. _ S _PMS III/397 /76-E Orig.: F b) Nonscheduled traffic The estimates of the nonscheduled traffic of the airlines of ICAO member countries in 1974 (excluding the USSR and the People's Republic of China) are based on statistics from 47 nonscheduled flight operators whose traffic is assumed to represent 75% of the total nonscheduled flight operators' traffic and on statistics for the nonscheduled traffic of 165 airlines providing scheduled services. In 1973~ nonscheduled services accounted for a total of 114,600 milliov passenger-kilometres (equivalent to 22% of scheduled traffic), falling in 1974 to 104,800 million passenger-kilometres (equivalent to 19•1% of scheduled traffic).     May 2019 Wing lift BNAPS News May 2020 BNAPS News Vol 10 Iss 3 – May 2020 BNAPS Workshop Shutdown and Reflections on Islander G-AVCN in 1967 At present there is no real indication of when we can re-start the work of completing the final assembly of G-AVCN. This period of inactivity is somewhat in contrast to what was happening at Bembridge Airport just over 53 years ago. Islander c/n 3 G-AVCN had made its first flight on 24 April and was soon being prepared to attend the Paris Air Show in June 1967. Parts for the first 30 production Islanders to be built solely by Britten-norman had been ordered. Islander G-AVCN at Le Bourget in June 1967 for the Paris Air Show (Interair Press/Denis Calvert). Such was the sales demand for the Islander that the arrangements for its production had to be completely revised. The new Britten-Norman assembly building was gearing up to a production rate of something like 10 Islanders/month as the wings and fuselages were delivered from the production lines established at the Falcon Works, East Cowes under a major sub-contract with the British Hovercraft Corporation. The “Islander Saga” feature article in this issue of BNAPS News gives an impression of the high level of B-N’s operations and activities at Bembridge and something of the challenges faced in getting the Islander into production and to market in the late 1960s.     Into History It came as a surprise to me that my first dealings with the Lynx were in 1967, 50 years where did it all go? The operation of helicopters from small ships was viewed by the Royal Navy as an important feature, a series of trials were carried out by the Saunders Roe Company using the P531 during which a range of undercarriage configurations and deck securing systems were assessed. And it was a direct result of these trials led to the production of the Wasp The early 1960s were stirring times, the Royal Navy using the Wasp had confirmed that a small ships helicopter was a force multiplier, all three services had identified the need for helicopters on the battlefield, industry responding to the proliferation of project studies identified three categories of aircraft and predicted a need for some 250 helicopters for the UK alone There were at the time four major aircraft companies involved in rotorcraft; namely Bristol Helicopters, Fairey Aviation, Saunders Roe and Westland Aircraft, these were brought together form Westland Helicopters. Some 20 widely different project studies led to the aircraft that was chosen to meet the Royal Navy’s and Army requirement. These were the times of ‘Britenter’ which resulted in the Anglo-French package deal to produce three aircraft thought necessary for the future. Lynx or WG 13 was then known was for a helicopter to operate from small ships and Utility helicopter for the Army. The magic words, ‘Intention to Proceed’ came in 1967 by which time Westland Helicopters were Britain’s sole helicopter company.

The entries in this guide are arranged by company name and include a history of each company, particularly its formation and that of subsidiaries together with mergers and take-overs. Brief details of the records, the relevant accession numbers and any limitations on access are given. Where the records have been listed this is indicated. A glossary of terms specific to the subject area is also included, together with an index. Background to the Collection The Museum's archive department began collecting records in the late 1960s and targeted a number of firms. Although many of the deposits were arranged through formal approaches by the Museum to companies, a significant number were offered by company staff: a significant example is the Supermarine archive (AC 70/4) including some 50,000 drawings, which would have been burnt had an employee not contacted the Museum. The collections seem to offer a bias towards certain types of record, notably drawings and production records, rather than financial records and board minutes.

    Obituary prepared for the Royal Aeronautical Society by David Gibbings ROGERS, Victor Alfred Baden - CBE MSc FREng FRAeS FIMechE CEng 1926 - 2015 Vic Rogers, retired, formerly Group & Technical Director of Westland plc, died on 23 January aged 88 years. Vic joined Fairey Aviation’s inspection department as a shop boy at the age of 15 becoming a Junior Inspector before transitioning through craft apprentice to the graduate stream as an Aeronautical Engineering Apprentice. In 1946 he was awarded an SBAC scholarship to attend the newly formed College of Aeronautics at Cranfield, gaining a Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering (DCAe) with Distinction in Aircraft Design. Returning to Fairey in 1948, Vic joined the new Helicopter section playing a key role within the Stress Office. He was instrumental in establishing a sound analytical approach to stress and dynamic analysis and other technical challenges within the emerging field of helicopter design with specific responsibility for stress and dynamics development throughout the Fairey Rotodyne programme. During the 1960s, in line with British government policy, the early work undertaken by Fairey, Bristol & Saunders-Roe was consolidated into Westland Aircraft Ltd. Vic moved to Westland Helicopters in Yeovil as Deputy Chief Designer in 1963 and was appointed Chief Designer in 1966. Responsible for the initial development and flight programme for the Westland Lynx, Vic was appointed Technical Director in 1972. He joined the Westland board in 1980 and retained responsibility for technical issues until he retired in 1988. Vic also served on multiple industry boards and committees associated with design and airworthiness standards. Joining the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1944, Vic was elected a Fellow in 1963.

It first recalls historical antecedents in the structural development of the main helicopter programs that helped to consolidate the industry and then reviews the industry’s current major trends. A paradoxical situation is identified: While European countries presently are able to cope with both, the growing needs in helicopter capabilities and the maintenance of ageing fleets, no large helicopter programs for the future have been launched. Some uncertainties regarding how future helicopter procurement will be organized are identified. The current situation underlines the challenges that European states will face to maintain both industrial skills in the industry and sovereignty in military helicopter capabilities. ABSTRACT This paper relates the way in which rotorcraft developed in Britain, leading to the growth of an effective design and manufacturing industry. The narrative is divided into five sections, each of which represents defining phases in UK based activity leading towards the development of the modern helicopter: 1. The Pre-Flight Period (1842-1903) This section covers British activity during the period when the objective was simply to demonstrate powered flight by any means, and where rotors might be considered to be a way of achieving this. 2. The Early Helicopter Period (1903-1926). Early attempts to build helicopters, including the work of Louise Brennan, which achieved limited success with a rotor driven by a propellers mounted on the blade tips. 3. The Pre-War Years (1926-1939) This section gives emphasis to development of the gyroplane and in particular the work of Juan de la Cierva, with his UK-based company to develop his 'Autogiro', from which the understanding of rotor dynamics and control was established, and which was to lead to the realisation of the helicopter by others. Although UK rotary wing development was driven by the gyroplane, the work carried out by the Weir Company, which was to lead to the first successful British helicopter is discussed. 4. The War Years. (1939-1945) Rotary wing activities in the UK were very limited during World War 2, restricted to the work carried out by Raoul Hafner with the Rotachute/ Rotabuggy programme and the use of autogiros for the calibration of radar.
