The military helicopter segment has been impacted significantly by continued defense budgetary pressures across most traditional markets, and a recent slide in global crude oil prices has impacted the demand for new civil helicopters as well as the level of activity for existing fleets engaged in the offshore oil & gas exploration sector. This situation has impacted industry OEMs significantly, many of which had been working towards strengthening the civil helicopter segment to partially offset the impact of budgetary cuts on the military segment. However, the medium- to long-term view of the market is promising given the presence of strong fundamentals and persistent, sustainable growth drivers. The market for military helicopters in particular is set to cross a technological threshold in the form of next-generation compound helicopters and tilt rotorcraft. -

Wessex could also operate in a wide range of weather conditions as well as at night, partly due to its use of an automatic pilot system. These same qualities that made The Westland Wessex is a British-built turbine-powered the Wessex well-suited to the anti-submarine role also development of the Sikorsky H-34, it was developed lent themselves to the search and rescue (SAR) mission, and produced under license by Westland Aircraft (later which the type would become heavily used for.[1] Westland Helicopters). One of the main changes from Sikorsky’s H-34 was the replacement of the piston-engine powerplant with a turboshaft engine; the Wessex was the first helicopter in the world to be produced in large num- bers that made use of a gas turbine propulsion system.[1] Early models were powered by a single Napier Gazelle engine, later builds used a pair of Rolls-Royce Gnome engines. The Wessex was initially produced for the Royal Navy (RN) and later for the Royal Air Force (RAF); a limited number of civilian aircraft were also produced, as well as some export sales. The Wessex operated as an anti- submarine warfare and utility helicopter; it is perhaps best recognised for its use as a search and rescue (SAR) he- licopter. Master Narrative Ours Is the Epic Story of the Royal Navy, Its Impact on Britain and the World from Its Origins in 625 A.D
NMRN Master Narrative Ours is the epic story of the Royal Navy, its impact on Britain and the world from its origins in 625 A.D. to the present day. We will tell this emotionally-coloured and nuanced story, one of triumph and achievement as well as failure and muddle, through four key themes:- People. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s people. We examine the qualities that distinguish people serving at sea: courage, loyalty and sacrifice but also incidents of ignorance, cruelty and cowardice. We trace the changes from the amateur ‘soldiers at sea’, through the professionalization of officers and then ships’ companies, onto the ‘citizen sailors’ who fought the World Wars and finally to today’s small, elite force of men and women. We highlight the change as people are rewarded in war with personal profit and prize money but then dispensed with in peace, to the different kind of recognition given to salaried public servants. Increasingly the people’s story becomes one of highly trained specialists, often serving in branches with strong corporate identities: the Royal Marines, the Submarine Service and the Fleet Air Arm. We will examine these identities and the Royal Navy’s unique camaraderie, characterised by simultaneous loyalties to ship, trade, branch, service and comrades. Purpose. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s roles in the past, and explain its purpose today. Using examples of what the service did and continues to do, we show how for centuries it was the pre-eminent agent of first the British Crown and then of state policy throughout the world. -

THE ROYAL AIR FORCE AND KUWAIT Please return to the holder for other visitors. Introduction In January 1899 an agreement was reached between Kuwait and the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom agreed to pay an annual subsidy to Kuwait and take responsibility for its security. The Anglo-Ottoman Convention of 1913 con rmed Kuwait’s status as an autonomous region within the Ottoman Empire. The defeat and collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War One, however, led to an unstable situation. In 1920 border disputes led to warfare between Kuwaitis and the Ikhwan tribes from Nejd. At first it was the Ikhwan who were victorious but in October they raided Jahra and were defeated. Sheikh Salim al-Mubarak Al-Sabah of Kuwait claimed to be in control of all territory in a radius of 140 kilometres from the capital but Abdul Aziz ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Sa’ud claimed that the borders of Kuwait did not extend beyond the walls of its capital. The British Government, unwilling at first to intervene, confirmed that it recognised the borders laid down in the 1913 Convention. Eventually the British Government sent warships to protect the Kuwaiti capital and RAF aircraft dropped copies of a communique to the Ikhwan tribesmen. This helped create an uneasy truce between the two countries and established a no man’s land. The 1921 Cairo Conference, chaired by Winston Churchill, established Iraq as a kingdom under King Faisal within the British Mandate. The Royal Air Force was tasked with maintaining peace in the country; it took command with effect from 1 October 1922. -

May 2019 Wing lift BNAPS News May 2020 BNAPS News Vol 10 Iss 3 – May 2020 BNAPS Workshop Shutdown and Reflections on Islander G-AVCN in 1967 At present there is no real indication of when we can re-start the work of completing the final assembly of G-AVCN. This period of inactivity is somewhat in contrast to what was happening at Bembridge Airport just over 53 years ago. Islander c/n 3 G-AVCN had made its first flight on 24 April and was soon being prepared to attend the Paris Air Show in June 1967. Parts for the first 30 production Islanders to be built solely by Britten-norman had been ordered. Islander G-AVCN at Le Bourget in June 1967 for the Paris Air Show (Interair Press/Denis Calvert). Such was the sales demand for the Islander that the arrangements for its production had to be completely revised. The new Britten-Norman assembly building was gearing up to a production rate of something like 10 Islanders/month as the wings and fuselages were delivered from the production lines established at the Falcon Works, East Cowes under a major sub-contract with the British Hovercraft Corporation. The “Islander Saga” feature article in this issue of BNAPS News gives an impression of the high level of B-N’s operations and activities at Bembridge and something of the challenges faced in getting the Islander into production and to market in the late 1960s. Apr 62 Six Belvederes including XG474 crated for transfer by cargo ship to Singapore. 08 Jun 62 Joined No. 66 Squadron at RAF Seletar, Singapore as the unit's second aircraft to arrive since moving to the Far East from RAF Odiham, where it formed from the Belvedere Trials Unit, equipped with eight Belvederes, on 15 Sep 1961. Given the individual code O. Squadron engaged in trooping, supply work, jungle and air - sea rescue and casevac throughout Malaysia. Aug/Sep 62 All Belvederes grounded pending investigation of a fatal crash in Germany. 18 Dec 62 - XG474/B was one of three Belvederes (plus XG473/A and XG 476/F ) detached to the oil -rich Sultanate of Brunei (Borneo) until 21 Mar 63 to support the anti - rebel forces in mopping up following the Dec 62 Brunei revolt which had started with rebel attacks on 8 December. The Belvederes were based at Brunei airport, having flown the 800 miles via Kuching to Labuan. -

Journalists wrote about it at the time, many people who were involved wrote about it in the immediate years that followed, and historians have tried to put it all together. The issues of foreign policy at the strategic level and the military operations that took place in this period have been especially well covered. However, the question of military strategic alternatives in this important era of British foreign policy has been less studied.
