Introducing Authentic Shaolin Discipleship Training in India

1

Lamka Shaolin Disciple’s Union www.kungfudisciples.com SHAOLIN KUNG FU DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING CURRICULUM:

Historically, the Chinese have not had a formal belt ranking system. The belt ranking systems, used in martial arts today, have only been around for approximately 100 years. They were instituted to signify advancement through the arts. However, an accomplished practitioner of Kung Fu is not concerned with the color of his belt, but with the advancement of his learning. Whatever rank you hold be proud of it. Self-improvement in the Art of Kung Fu, not belt advancement, should be the student’s goal. “Remember that the strong green tree that stops growing withers and gradually dies” meaning, the student that does not continually strive to learn will gradually lose the skills they have acquired.

What you will learn The basics My students start their training by learning not to rely on physical strength, but technique. I begin by teaching them how to and effectively, how to use and blocking to evade an attack, and how to use short- and long-range self-defense techniques such as joint locks and throws.

Form In years gone by the use of form was used to develop stamina through a sequence of pre-arranged techniques which help develop coordination and movement. This is something not too dissimilar to modern day shadow . Our forms incorporate multi angle as well as multi-level application which help foster a better understanding of “flow” and “center”.

Weapons Once students have learned to master basic techniques, they are taught how to defend themselves with different types of weapons. These include long staff, spear, dagger, broadsword and butterfly knives. Although many are centuries old, all have modern equivalents and by learning how to use them students develop control and technique that can be transferred to modern-day situations.

Animal styles The monks at the Shaolin Temple used to watch the way animals would fight. From watching these animals, the monks devised moves and techniques into various fighting skills. I teach seven main animal styles which have their own sub-school within the system which is taught at the higher grades.

Qi Gong These are breathing exercises which are used to relieve stress, improve concentration, strengthen and nourish internal organs and to teach you how to channel your body’s own energy, its chi, into a movement or part of your body. Gong has been around for over a thousand years and helps improve strength and functionality of internal organs. Qi Gong breathing exercises incorporate postural positioning which are either static or in movement, breathing techniques which use the lower diaphragm and mental focus.

Sparring I use in order to give our students an understanding of how to use technique while under pressure. It also gives the student a better understanding of utilization of power as well as the importance of mental focus. I utilize a full range of techniques which allows the student to gain a better insight into the various levels of combat.

Genuine Shaolin arts can be readily recognized from their results: A Shaolin Qi Gong practitioner is healthy, energetic and happy. A Shaolin Kung Fu exponent is characteristically efficient and practical in all areas of life, also exemplifying compassion and righteousness. A Zen practitioner demonstrates clarity of mind and inner peace in all situations.

All Shaolin Training requires daily practice. Qi Gong offers a lot through relatively small effort, whereas Kung Fu demands serious commitment, correspondingly offering even more. Zen practice can vary from light Training to all-encompassing, depending on the practitioner.

The sole reason for practicing is getting excellent practical benefits. My students are guided to compose their own Training programs based on their needs, aims and objectives.

Kung Fu Basics Learning anything new can be a challenge. The introduction to traditional Kung Fu starts with a basic foundation: stances, basic kicks and punches, flexibility work and overall conditioning. The beginning of every class at LSDU consists of a warm-up, stretching and basic drills (to keep everything you learn precise), followed by forms instruction. How many forms a student learns is based on the curriculum he or she chooses.

There are basic elements that need to be mastered before advancing to any style. These elements have been standardized from a style of Kung Fu known as “Long FIST,” and will teach students several ways to block, kick and punch. Along the way, students will also improve their balance and strength.

Yin Shou Guan – Shaolin stick form Tantui (Spring Leg Form) Created in Northern China by Chinese Muslims, Tantui is composed of a series of forms which emphasize blocking, stances, footwork, and, most of all, kicks. Tantui exists as a style on its own but is commonly used as a basic foundation form. The Tantui routines consist of “Roads” or parts that divide the form into its many variations. Originally Tantui consisted of 28 Roads that were based on the 28 characters of the Arabic alphabet and was later shortened. Today the most common variations of Tantui are the 10 and 12 Road Tantui.

Springing Leg forms have a long history in China. The 12 Roads of this form are the basis for more advanced material in the Long FIST system. This form improves your fighting skills, balance, strength, and focus; thus, Tantui contains the basic skills and flexibility drills required in advanced forms. In some schools, Tantui is taught as the first form to build the skills necessary to advance in the system. It has been stated that if a new student doesn’t find the Tantui form challenging, then he or she will not like the Long FIST style of Kung Fu. Tantui is deeply rooted in China’s Hui Muslim community.

One such indication of the Islamic influence is the posture of holding one punch out in front of body as a punch is thrown to the rear with the other hand. The body is turned sideways so that both the front and the rear punches reach maximum range. Besides being a good exercise to train the fighter to get full shoulder and body trust behind each punch, like a good boxer, it also is a giveaway that the form has a Muslim history. Kung Fu forms that use this posture come from China’s Muslim community. LSDU’s Tantui consists of ten sections and is taught first to get new students comfortable memorizing set movements, controlled motion, kick and punch combinations and other basic Kung Fu combinations.

Man Tao Pi Gua Quan Pi Gua is a style that features explosive, long range power and is famous for its palm techniques. It originated in Hebei Province of northern China, but is also well-known in other places as well today, especially Taiwan. Pi Qua’s power is from the acceleration force of the arms which are often in rotation. The hip movement in Pi Gua is more subtle and gentle than its rougher counterpart because you only need enough to guide the powerful strikes whereas in Baji, the hammers, punches, elbows and swings rely heavily on the quick and powerful rotation and sinking of the hips to generate its power.

Originally Baji and Pi Gua were the same art but split from each other hundreds of years ago. Master Li Shu Wen remarried the two systems in the late 18th Century/early 19th Century. Today these two styles are often taught together and are said to complement each other.

The Man Tao Pi Gua Quan style has existed since the Ming Dynasty (400 years ago). The form was taught by Master Guo Chang Sheng and Master Ma Ying Tu in the Nan King Guo Shu Institute in 1928. Its four major characteristics are flexibility, quickness, variety and a long reach. The speed of punching is like a flying star, the sharpness of eyes is like lightning, the flexibility of the waist is like a creeping snake, and the stability of the feet is like tree roots. In fighting, Pi Gua Quan is a long- distance offensive-oriented Kung Fu style. The arms are relaxed with swift, explosive power connected throughout of the body. Pi Gua Quan is a total body workout. By practicing Pi Gua Quan, a practitioner will improve his or her flexibility, speed, agility, and coordination.

Chuo Jiao Quan Chuo Jiao Quan translates as Piercing Feet Boxing. It is representative of a Northern Chinese kicking style. The first historic record can be found as early as in the Song Dynasty, over 1,000 years ago. The style was taught by Master Liu Bin Lou in Beijing in the 1930s and spread rapidly. Its main characteristic is hands and feet attacking the opponent simultaneously, with a focus on the kicking aspect. The FIST and feet work in unison and strike continuously forward, like “falling meteorites,” never giving the opponent a moment to recover.

It is not only very practical in fighting but also very beautiful to watch. By practicing Chuo Jiao, a practitioner will improve his or her body strength, especially lower body strength, flexibility, speed, and arm-leg coordination.

Big Frame Baji Quan Baji Quan translates as the Eight Extreme FISTs. It is believed to have been passed down by Wu Zhong in the 18th Century, and was taught by Master Meng Xiang Zhong in Nan king Guo Shu Institute in 1928.

Its major characteristics are explosive power, foot stomping and close quarter fighting. Baji’s movements are simple, quick and explosive by using linear attacks, low stances, and straight steps and breathe control when striking to maximize power.

Baji Quan was originally called Baji Quan, or “rake FIST,” due to the fact that when not striking, the FIST is held loosely and slightly open, resembling a rake. However, the name was considered to be rather crude sounding in its native tongue, and so it was changed to the more pleasing Baji Quan.

The essence of Baji Quan lies in “JIn” (i.e., power or power methods). Unlike most western forms of martial arts which require swinging motion to create momentum, most of Baji Quan’s moves utilize a one hit push-strike from a very close distance. The bulk of the damage is dealt through the momentary acceleration that travels up from the waist to the limb and is further magnified by the charging step. A Baji practitioner will improve his or her body stamina, body strength, and explosive power.

Ying Shou Quan Fa Ying Shou Quan translates as Eagle Claw Boxing and is one of the oldest and most complex of the surviving Northern Shaolin Kung Fu systems. Along with the long strikes and kicks that typify Northern systems, the Eagle Claw system is distinguished by its powerful gripping techniques and intricate system of locks, takedowns, and pressure point strikes, which represent one of the oldest forms of Qin Na.

Eagle Claw Boxing is said to have been created by General Yue Fei during the Song Dynasty, over 1,000 years ago. Eagle Claw Boxing has been taught by Master Guo Xian He of Beijing since the 1970s and is a traditional animal-imitating style that incorporates the movements and techniques of the eagle. The main characteristics of Beijing School Eagle Claw are grabbing and striking.

The core of Eagle Claw Boxing consists of 83 Sanshou Techniques, the 10-section Eagle Claw Traveling FIST and the Eagle Claw Fighting Set. By practicing Eagle Claw, one can improve his or her body strength, arm strength, finger strength, explosive power and speed.

Lamka Shaolin Disciple’s Union www.kungfudisciples.com IRON Palm Curriculum for Shaolin Kung Fu Discipleship Training.

Phase 1 1. Body Relaxing 2. Loosening 3. Stretching 4. Conditioning and Body Connection Bagua And Taichi Exercises 5. And A Very Specific Method of Push Hands …are all taught to beginners.

These are practiced and refined all the way through the program by even the most advanced students. Internal sensitivity training begins with the Push Hands but by the time the students are at an intermediate level it is expected that they can feel the internal energy movement within the Bagua exercises and Shaolin or Taichi sets also.

Phase 2 At the next level students are taught Whole Body Power, Heavy Hands and Body, Compression Hitting, a very powerful but basic series of 1 Hit/Touch Knockouts and Iron Body which includes Iron hand and forearm. Then students learn a fighting method for delivering multiple Iron Palm Slaps very rapidly. Generally speaking, they can throw 3 – 5 of these hits per second and train to sustain it for a minimum of several minutes at a time. It makes for an amazing offense and defense all in one.

There is a little breaking of wood to make sure that development and ability are appropriately developing and students have to demonstrate a basic proficiency level before progressing.

Phase 3 At the next level students begin Lao Gung development. Also, students learn how to focus and condense Qi and energy flow. They train Internal Iron Palm and Poison Hand specifically as well as the Whip hand and fighting methods that generate strikes from the legs and spine out to the hands.

Students also learn how to evade Iron Palm strikes while still landing their own hit(s) and how to internally and externally redirect the energy of energetic hits they receive so that if they are hit, they can mentally redirect the energy back out of their body and not be vitally damaged.

At this level there is more wood breaking. Also, students must be able to hold a board in one hand and break it with their other hand.

Phase 4 and above: Intermediate Methods include (but are not limited to) penetrating palm, crushing palm, vibrating palm, short distance hitting, introductory no-distance hitting, the transference of shock power hitting and utilizing the Lao Gong to energetically hit.

Skill tests include being able to hold two boards in one hand and break them both or only break one of the two boards, as chosen by the instructor, with their other hand. So, in reality they have to be able to break either one or all of them by choice.

Also, by now brick breaking is tested and the student has to break at least one brick. The average student has the power/ability to break a brick prior to testing for it at this level but I do not rush brick breaking in accordance with what Tyrone taught me.

30

Lamka Shaolin Disciple’s Union www.kungfudisciples.com

Advanced methods include (but are not limited to) cotton palm, springy palm, fire hands (burning palm), Advanced No-distance hitting and universal energy palm. Also included are learning how to use a Yin palm to take energy out and the Yang palm to put negative energy in to someone.

Also, the delayed death touch and other advanced striking methods are in the advanced curriculum as well as more advanced methods of energy transference including being able to strike a person almost anywhere and have the strike travel through the opponent’s body to an intended destination somewhere else inside them.

Healing methods for many of the energetic strikes are included.

Skill tests include being able to hold three boards and break them all or only break any one or two together of the boards as chosen by the instructor and being able to break bricks and get different effects with the brick breaks.

There are other skill tests as well such as being able to lightly hit through a very thick force shield pad and have the person who is holding the pad feel the hit as if the pad is not there. I have some police officers for students and have demonstrated this hit through a bullet proof vest.

Taichi Iron Palm Methods I also have a method that is taught as part of my advanced Taichi curriculum that includes Internal Iron Body, Cotton Palm and high-level Dim Mak including being able to hit anywhere on their body and have your blow go where you want it to as well as how to touch the opponent very lightly (or so it seems) and transmit a tremendous amount of damage to their spine and central nervous system.

One of the tests for this involves the use of a thick phone book. The receiving student holds the phone book over their belly and the striking student hits the phone book and their palm print has to appear on the receiving student’s belly. Healing methods for many of the energetic strikes are included.

Once you learn how you actually practice the strikes and healing energy and methods for these by practicing the Taichi set and Push Hands which makes it sound simpler than it is because it is quite a bit to learn and it takes a lot of work, patience and diligent practice while you are being guided/advised by a competent teacher to get it right.
