Even the innkeep, Jhaele Silver-mane, paused a moment from her duties at the bar to show her appreciation. The singer bowed once to her audience and then to the songhorn player who had accompanied her. The rustic common room was full of farmers who only half an hour ago had been grumbling and cursing the rain that kept them from the season's haying. Now, instead of nursing their first drink for two hours and worrying about how they were going to feed their livestock all winter on moldy hay, the farmers were ordering their second pint and cheering for the singer to give them another song. The singer, the sell-sword Alias of Westgate, also known as Alias of the Azure Bonds, smiled gratefully. She sang to keep herself occupied, since the Harpers would not let her visit her father, the Nameless Bard, and she sang to defy the Harpers, who had tried to wipe out the bard's music. Mostly, though, she sang because she knew the bard would want her to, no matter what happened to him. Secretly, though, she was struggling to think of a graceful way to decline singing any further this day. "Please, Alias," the songhorn player whispered to the singer. "They need something to keep their minds off this weather." "Han, I… I think I'm losing my voice," Alias whispered back. "Your voice sounds just fine," Han insisted. "One more at least," a deep voice rumbled from a table beside the musicians' platform, "or I'll have to have the watch haul you off for denying the happiness of the good people of Shadowdale." Alias laughed good-naturedly at the threat. The speaker was Mourngrym Amcathra, lord of Shadowdale, and the swordswoman counted him among her friends. She tossed her red hair behind her shoulders and flapped the bottom of her green woolen tunic in an effort to cool off. "Then I suppose I'd have to sing for the watch, wouldn't I?" Alias asked Mourngrym. "That's right," Mourngrym replied with a twinkle in his eye. "And then" he added, "I'd have to sentence you to sing lullabies to my son for a year." His lordship bounced the aforementioned baby on his knee and asked him, "You'd like that, wouldn't you. Song of the Saurials. It is up to the bard's friends, Alias the swords-woman, Akabar the mage, Dragonbait the paladin, and Olive Ruskettle the thief, to prove one enemy is behind all the chaos—the ancient evil god, Moander the Darkbringer. Unless Alias and her companions can find Nameless and convince him to sacrifice some of his precious power, Moander will return to claim the Realms. Contents. Summary [ edit | edit source ] Finder Wyvernspur, aka the Nameless Bard, is undergoing a new trial at the Tower of Ashaba, by three Harper judges, Morala, Breck Orcsbane, and Kyre. Elminster tries to persuade the Harpers to repeal the banishment of Finder, his name, and his songs. Olive Ruskettle breaks into the tower using Finder's Harper pin, and tries to persuade him to escape by using the Finder's Stone. Elminster disappears, and is replaced by the Saurial mage Grypht. Kyre leads the Harpers in attacking Grypht, whom she claims to be a creature of the Nine Hells. Grypht flees to Finder's cell. Kyre follows and traps Grypht in a soul gem. She attacks Finder but he and Olive teleport to Finder's old castle. Kyre lies that Finder has been kidnapped by Grypht, and Alias, Dragonbait and Akabar are summoned. Alias is suffering a malady where she involuntarily changes the lyrics of Finder's songs. The Turmish mage Akabar has returned north with his new wife Zhara, a cleric who is later revealed to be one of the clones of Alias created in ''Azure Bonds''. He has had nightmares which suggest the dark god Moander the Darkbringer is returning. Alias refuses to accept this. In fact, Dragonbait's tribe of saurials have been possessed by Moander, and his former lover Coral is conscripted as the “Mouth of Moander” through whom the god speaks. She tries but fails to resist this possession, and to commit suicide. Elminster is trapped on Dragonbait's world due to a spell cast by Moander. He was sent there by a transference spell cast by Grypht. The saurials are building Moander a new body made of rotting matter, by ransacking the surrounding forests. Finder and Olive try to reach Finder's old workshop. They encounter poison traps, Orcs, and a posssessed Beholder named Xaran. Finder is poisoned due to recklessness, but uses an antitoxin potion. Following Finder's instructions, Olive enters the workshop and narrowly avoids a trap left by Flattery. She learns that Finder has lied about Flattery. Finder is caught by the Orcs and offered a deal by the Beholder: escape and immortality in return for capturing Akabar. Finder tries to negotiate, but Olive figures out that the offered immortality involves possession by Moander. Xaran fires possession spores at Finder, which he appears to resist. Olive and Finder become trapped behind a wall of rubble. Kyre seduces Akabar, and turns out to be a possessed servant of Moander. She attempts to infect Akabar, but he fights and kills her. In the process, he releases Grypht, who flees carrying the unconscious Akabar. They are attacked by possessed Treants. Alias, Breck, and Dragonbait set out in pursuit, based on the lie that Grypht murdered Kyre. Breck is in love with Kyre and will not accept that Grypht may not be evil. Dragonbait helps Zhara to disguise herself as Alias so she can follow them in secret, and leaves a trail for her. When Zhara is discovered, the four adventurers fight amongst themselves. Grypht and Akabar return to the pursuing party.

Guide to the Spheres An "official" Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres [revised 1.0] By Paul Westermeyer aka GMWestermeyer Table of Contents: Page Section 1 Introduction 2 Phlogiston Navigation 4 Phlogiston Transit Times 4 Where is the Rock of Bral? 6 “Official” Flow Map 7 The Spheres and other Phlogiston Locations 23 ‘Loose’ Planets/Worlds 34 Bibliography: Introduction Spelljammer is a very unique and creative setting, but it is also one of the worst organized settings TSR produced with material is scattered among many different products. This makes it very difficult to find what you are looking for, a problem exasperated by Spelljammer’s status as a ‘connection’ campaign, designed (like Planescape) to connect the ‘big’ three settings, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Dragonlance. I’ve been working to alleviate this problem by writing guides and indices for those aspects of Spelljammer that are most important for creating a coherent, rational game setting. The first of these guides was An “Official” Spelljammer Timeline, which collated Spelljammer-related historical mentions in published TSR products into a cohesive, coherent timeline that Spelljammer (or Hackjammer) gamemasters could use as the foundation of their own, personalized campaigns. This guide, An “Official” Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres, has a similar purpose. Spelljammer’s iconic center is the Rock of Bral, just as Sigil is the iconic heart of Planescape, Spelljammer’s setting cousin, but Sigil’s location is quite firmly placed at the center of the Plane of Concordant Opposition, metaphorically the heart of the entire Advanced Dungeons and Dragons multiverse. Moreover, the various inner and outer planes are all well mapped in relation to each other, and have been ever since the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player’s Handbook in 1978.

Looting the Dungeon: the Quest for the Genre Fantasy Mega-Text

Looting the Dungeon: The Quest for the Genre Fantasy Mega-Text Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Aidan-Paul Canavan. April 2011 Aidan-Paul Canavan University of Liverpool Abstract Popular genre fantasy diverges in a number of significant ways from Tolkien’s mythic vision of fantasy. As a result of the genre’s evolution away from this mythic model, many of the critical approaches used to analyse genre fantasy, often developed from an understanding of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, do not identify new norms and developments. The RPG, a commercial codification of perceived genre norms, highlights specific trends and developments within the genre. It articulates, explains and illustrates core conventions of the genre as they have developed over the last thirty years. Understanding the evolution of the genre is predicated on a knowledge of how the genre is constructed. Assuming the primacy of Tolkien’s text and ignoring how the genre has changed from a literary extension of myth and legend to a market-driven publishing category, reduces the applicability of our analytical models and creates a distorted perception of the genre. This thesis seeks to place the RPG, and its related fictions, at the centre of the genre by recognising their symbiotic relationship with the wider genre of fantasy. By acting as both an articulation of perceived genre norms, and also as a point of dissemination and propagation of these conventions, the RPG is essential to the understanding of fantasy as a genre.

Not up to parBy jfgtmaI loved Wyvern's Spur, it's my favorite forgotten realms book, but this one seems like they licensed it out to their 10 year old son to write. It's like fan fiction of fan fiction. But you do find out what happens to Finder.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed the character development in the new god FinderBy SharonI enjoyed the character development in the new god Finder. His relationship to his primary priest and his struggle to be true to the hopes and expectations of his few worshippers is revealed throughout the adventure his priest is sent on. This is exciting and riveting. It was a pleasure to find out what happened after the Azure Bonds story which resulted in the Forgotten Bard becoming a god. This continuation of the trilogy - Azure Bonds, The Wyvern's Spur and The Song of the Saurials; is a worthy addition to the saga.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
