So what’s next? 04 WORLD SHOWCASE Mike Myler’s Mists of Akuma This year our podcast, Worldcasting, became available on most platforms. On it, we’ve discussed building histories and magic systems, interviewed author Phil Athans, and much more. Meanwhile Worldbuilding Magazine has been working to maintain the high bar of quality we set for ourselves last year while explor- ing new worldbuilding concepts. This issue focuses on 12 the arts, and we’re already planning for our next two ART AS PROPAGANDA A Social Barometer which will take a close look at ancestry and architec- ture, respectively. There’s more to come, and we can’t wait to share it. Until then, we hope you find something in this issue to help make your world feel just a bit more lived-in. 57 Happy worldbuilding! Among those, many are hated outright (bake- mono, mutants, necroji, oni-touched, shikome, and steametics). They even get a trait for that social perception in-game. The tanuki are in a bit of a gray area because, after the successful rebellion, the re-instated emperor called for an end to slavery—but their prefecture is just kind of ignoring the edict. The rest of the races have been influenced by their time being subjugated, and it depends on where you’re look- ing at. Tengu have kind of gone with the flow; the umibo suffered mightily and live long lives, so the memories of the Kengen Occupation are fresh; the Enjin have clung to tradition in the face of oppression and embraced nature. The dozen different hengeyokai run the gamut but generally align with their associated animal’s traits—inu (dog) hengeyokai are known to be loyal; saru (monkey) hengeyokai are mischievous and often unlawful; nezumi (rat) hengeyokai are sneaky planners. Can you tell me a bit about the first few years of Ceramian occupation, or is the focus of the content more on the present-day? It was very brutal and gets covered in the “Prefectures” chapter, but basically they showed up, proved they were an overwhelming force, and then divided up all the inhuman races across the continent. All the tanuki over in Shinko; all the kappa forcibly moved to Korusu; on and on down the line. They mostly used Soburin as a source for soldiers in a distant conflict (the War of Kaiyo) against the Ropaeo, but they also strip-mined and deforested and basically abused the land. The focus is definitely on the modern day, but that whole modular design I mentioned? It has another facet. Lots of people are against steam- punk, and we are aware of that, so you can just NATHANAEL BACHELOR 6 Worldbuilding Magazine Each prefecture is ruled over by a clan of nobles who can claim ancestry among the Imperial Sib- lings that founded Soburin some ~3,000 years ago. They mostly get along, although the Gekido, Nami- da, Hakaisuru, and Kirai have this long-time feud which is at the heart of Imperial Matchmaker, one of our adventures. The Rimono, Supai, Uso, and Uragi all embrace science and technology—which is heresy. Most people fear technology not just because of its use against them during the Kengen Occupation, but also because the Mists of Akuma can prematurely transform an ob- ject into a tsukumogami (a monster with attitudes and desires deter- mined by how well it was treated before attaining sentience—so weapons of war tend to be angry, destructive, and murderous). Oh, and nobody trusts Miyaki. That whole island recently reappeared via the mists with a supposed true Imperial Sibling ruling over it. MICHAEL McCARTHY take the steampunk out. That’s why it’s always the last descriptor for the setting. All the prefectures (a territory within the empire The Imperial Siblings are mytho- of Soburin) that have embraced science are literally on the corners logical wuxia figures—impossibly of the world map, so if you want to use the book and play a more powerful warriors and mages who tamed the lands long ago, beating traditional Eastern fantasy noir game, you just declare that those back the oni and other monsters prefectures are absent and remove a few character options. that stood as obstacles to civili- zation. Bestiary of the Realms, Volume 1 TABLE of CONTENTS

Bestiary of the Realms: Volume 1 by Eric L. Boyd and Thomas M. Costa Art by Noëlle Triaureau (aughisky, cave fisher, cooshee, gaunt, greater raven, werefox, finhead saurial, shoosuva) and Thomas M. Costa (campestri) A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS The Forgotten Realms has been a living breathing world for decades, brought to life by the fertile mind of Ed Greenwood in 1967 and nurtured and grown by countless authors and game designers since its publication in 1987. Between 1987 and 2000, TSR, Inc. and Wizards of the Coast released an enormous volume of game material for the Forgotten Realms under the aegis of the 1st and 2nd Editions of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. In 2000, Wizards of the Coast updated the venerable Dungeons & Dragons game, with the release of 3rd Edition or “3E.” In 2001, Wizards of the Coast updated the Forgotten Realms campaign setting to 3rd Edition as well. In the opinion of the authors, the introduction of 3rd Edition is a welcome addition to the ever-growing Forgotten Realms, for the system’s flexibility allows game designers to better represent the endless variety of life that dwells in the Forgotten Realms. However, the downside of the new version of the game is that, given the volume of game material produced under the banner of earlier editions, Wizards of the Coast will never be able to update all of it to the new system. This discordance is very unfortunate for the Dungeon Master running a campaign set in the Forgotten Realms, for it is the vast quantity of Realmslore that makes Abeir-Toril feel like a living, breathing world.

    Faith & Heresy

Faith & Heresy By Ken Hart and Jeff LaSala Illustrations by Tyler Jacobson and Eric Belisle In a world where divine magic is real—witnessed in the ghostly light of a righteous brand or felt in the restorative power of healing word—faith takes on new meaning. No one disputes that divine prayers are granted or that higher powers exist. The more pro- found question concerns the nature of that divinity. Are deities the rightful masters of the universe, or mere pretenders to apocryphal power? To the laity and most of the population, they are the former, even if judicious prayers to multiple gods suggest none are viewed as omnipotent. To nonbelievers, the “gods” must be the latter: mighty immortals who presume to lord over creation with selfish ideals, bent on shaping the world according to their whims. They might be worthy of acknowledgment, but not of lifelong servitude. Clerics stand apart from these multitudes. They are champions of a particular faith or creed, focused on the cause that their deity or pantheon represents. Gods seldom intervene directly in the mortal world because they cannot or they care not. Clerics are instruments of their deities—speaking, acting, and fighting as mortal emissaries of their divine patrons. TM & © 2011 Wizards of the Coast LLC. All rights reserved.
