These messages were reformatted and compiled into a collection called the Forgotten Realms Notebooks. After a two years of various realeases and volumes of the Notebooks, the first edition of the Compendium was created. This was a compilation of all previous Notebooks into one single text. The text was released in text, Word Perfect, Microsof t Word, and PostScript file formats across various sites on the Internet. In 1993-1994 TSR was starting to place its influence on the net public. Various discussions on the newsgroups and lists occurred with TSR representatitives over the use of the Internet to distribute gaming ideas and original information that involved TSR gaming systems. TSR was sending out “cease and desist” letters to FTP and Gopher site managers to remove all TSR related files that may include TSR copyrighted information. Since it was hard to tell what may be TSR copyrighted in these files, a majority of the sites wiped clean entire directories of files. TSR eventually made its presence on the Internet through an agreement with the MultiPlayer Gaming Network (mpgn.com) and allowed individuals to place original gaming information on the MPGN ftp server. A disclaimer must prefix all items that states the intent of the material and that TSR holds copyright to TSR items. The Forgotten Realms Compendium made its home at this site. Over the next few years, the Forgotten Realms Compendium went through two editions. And finally a third has been completed. Message from the editor This is the third edition of the Compendium. This will be the last Compendium I will be releasing. The time and involvement needed to keep this project going is too much for me to handle. I have not been able to keep up with the lists, newsgroups, and websites to find new additions to the wealth of information contained within this book. My inspiration for creating the Forgotten Realms Compendium comes from the letters found in the 1st edition Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide. Gary Gygax explains the true spirit behind TSR publications

  • Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil ERRATA and FAQ
Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil ERRATA AND FAQ A collaborative product of the members of Monte Cook's Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil web forum. Compiled, edited, and formatted by Siobharek. PDF version edited by ZansForCans. Modified: 11 February 2003 The definitive source for this errata and FAQ can be found in the ‘sticky’ threads at the top of the topic list on Monte Cook's Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil web forum. None of these errata or FAQ are official in any way (i.e. Monte or WotC have not said "That's right."), but most have been agreed to be accurate and true to the core rulebooks by many DMs running this adventure. NPC stats corrections are grouped in the appropriate chapter that the NPC appears in. In some cases, there is no ‘fix’ suggested—the errata is simply provided to alert you to a discrepancy. You didn’t think we’d do all the work for you, did you? It may seem like there are quite a lot of errata for this product. There are! Part of the explanation we have heard is that Monte was working on the adventure while D&D 3e was still being finalized. The rest we simply blame on his editors. ;) We welcome further corrections and additions to this list. However, when and if you find something that doesn't seem right, please check in every available rulebook. For instance, adding the right number of feats and stat increases to monsters with classes can be fiendishly hard but check it and double check it as much as you can.

  • An "Official" Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres [Revised 1.0]
Guide to the Spheres An "official" Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres [revised 1.0] By Paul Westermeyer aka GMWestermeyer Table of Contents: Page Section 1 Introduction 2 Phlogiston Navigation 4 Phlogiston Transit Times 4 Where is the Rock of Bral? 6 “Official” Flow Map 7 The Spheres and other Phlogiston Locations 23 ‘Loose’ Planets/Worlds 34 Bibliography: Introduction Spelljammer is a very unique and creative setting, but it is also one of the worst organized settings TSR produced with material is scattered among many different products. This makes it very difficult to find what you are looking for, a problem exasperated by Spelljammer’s status as a ‘connection’ campaign, designed (like Planescape) to connect the ‘big’ three settings, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Dragonlance. I’ve been working to alleviate this problem by writing guides and indices for those aspects of Spelljammer that are most important for creating a coherent, rational game setting. The first of these guides was An “Official” Spelljammer Timeline, which collated Spelljammer-related historical mentions in published TSR products into a cohesive, coherent timeline that Spelljammer (or Hackjammer) gamemasters could use as the foundation of their own, personalized campaigns. This guide, An “Official” Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres, has a similar purpose. Spelljammer’s iconic center is the Rock of Bral, just as Sigil is the iconic heart of Planescape, Spelljammer’s setting cousin, but Sigil’s location is quite firmly placed at the center of the Plane of Concordant Opposition, metaphorically the heart of the entire Advanced Dungeons and Dragons multiverse. Moreover, the various inner and outer planes are all well mapped in relation to each other, and have been ever since the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player’s Handbook in 1978.

  • Page 22 Survival Horrality: Analysis of a Videogame Genre (1) Ewan
Page 22 Survival Horrality: Analysis of a Videogame Genre (1) Ewan Kirkland Introduction The title of this article is drawn from Philip Brophy’s 1983 essay which coins the neologism ‘horrality’, a merging of horror, textuality, morality and hilarity. Like Brophy’s original did of 1980s horror cinema, this article examines characteristics of survival horror videogames, seeking to illustrate the relationship between ‘new’ (media) horror and ‘old’ (media) horror. Brophy’s term structures this investigation around key issues and aspects of survival horror videogames. Horror relates to generic parallels with similarlylabelled film and literature, including gothic fiction, American horror cinema and traditional Japanese culture. Textuality examines the aesthetic qualities of survival horror, including the games’ use of narrative, their visual design and structuring of virtual spaces. Morality explores the genre’s ideological characteristics, the nature of survival horror violence, the familial politics of these texts, and their reflection on issues of institutional and bodily control. Hilarity refers to moments of humour and self reflexivity, leading to consideration of survival horror’s preoccupation with issues of vision, identification, and the nature of the videogame medium. ‘Survival horror’ as a game category is unusual for its prominence within videogame scholarship. Indicative of the amorphous nature of popular genres, Aphra Kerr notes: ‘game genres are poorly defined and evolve as new technologies and fashions emerge’;(2) an observation which applied as much to videogame academia as to the videogame industry. Within studies of the medium, various game types are commonly listed. These might include the shoot‘emup, the racing game, the platform game, the God game, the realtime strategy game, and the puzzle game,(3) the simulation, roleplaying, fighting/action, sports, traditional and ‘”edutainment”’ game,(4) or action, adventure, strategy and ‘processorientated’ games.(5) These clusters of game types tend to be broad, commonsensical, and undertheorized.
