Press Release Completion of the Murray Hotel Is Celebrated in Hong Press release 21 December 2017 Completion of the Murray Hotel is celebrated in Hong Kong The Murray Hotel, re-imagined and designed by Foster + Partners, officially marked its completion at a plaque unveiling ceremony today in Hong Kong officiated by guest-of- honour, Mrs. Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the HKSAR along with Mr. Peter Woo, Chairman of Wheelock Holdings Pte Ltd. The Murray, converted from the previously known Murray Building, is one of several historic landmarks under the Conserving Central Initiative Project to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the HKSAR. A former government headquarters tower, the 25-storey Murray Building, originally designed by architect Ron Phillips almost 50 years ago, has been re-born as The Murray, a 336-room luxury hotel with panoramic views over the city’s Central Business District and serene green surroundings. The architecture of the building is in direct response to the climate of Hong Kong with recessed windows, carefully orientated to avoid the harsh tropical sunlight. The new design retains the façade while upgrading other aspects of the building and extending the life of the building by introducing new functions appropriate for the changing demands of the city – giving it a sustainable legacy for years to come. A central aim of the project was to reconnect with the city at ground level, creating a new street frontage on Garden Road, transparent and welcoming ground floor spaces, and enhancing and extending the landscaped grounds to incorporate a public tai chi area. A large historic tree (‘Old and Valuable Tree’), which rises up through the podium has been conserved as the centrepiece of the arrivals sequence for guests. Mrs. Carrie Lam said, “Having actually worked in this building twice in my public service career, I am thrilled to witness the impressive transformation of The Murray, once home to many government departments for half a century, to becoming a home away from home for guests from around the world.” “We are grateful that we are given the opportunity to take on this project, a very unique project; we are inspired by the energy of this building, and the timelessness of the architecture; we are humbled because we have the responsibility to undertake this very important project to create a dialogue between the old and the new,” said Mr. Peter Woo. “We decided to mandate Foster+ Partners to work with us because of their vast experience in conservation projects the world over. We thank our project partners and various government departments for working closely and diligently together to make the completion of the project possible,” Peter Woo added. Committed to preserving this iconic landmark, Wharf engaged Foster + Partners to redesign, redevelop and launch this hotel for the people of Hong Kong. By breathing new life into this modern Hong Kong property, a unique hotel and leisure destination for local and international guests to enjoy has been established. As the flagship property of Niccolo Hotels, which owns and operates an exclusive collection of luxury hotels, The Murray received its hotel license in late November, and will fully open for guests in March 2018. This article examines the problem of press freedom from the perspective of the political economy of the media. According to conventional understanding, the Chinese government has exerted indirect influence over the Hong Kong media through co-opting media owners, most of whom were entrepreneurs with ample business interests in the mainland. At the same time, there were internal tensions within the political economic system. The latter opened up a space of resistance for media practitioners and thus helped the media system as a whole to maintain a degree of relative autonomy from the power centre. However, into the 2010s, the media landscape has undergone several significant changes, especially the worsening media business environment and the growth of digital media technologies.

INTRODUCTION Transitional Hong Kong's endgame formally came to a close with the territory's reversion to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997. How- ever, a legal and institutional order and a "rule of law" for Chi- nese-ruled Hong Kong remain works in progress. They will surely bear the mark of the conflicts that dominated the final years pre- ceding Hong Kong's legal transition from British colony to Chinese Special Administrative Region ("S.A.R."). Those endgame conflicts reflected a struggle among adherents to rival conceptions of a rule of law and a set of laws and institutions that would be adequate and acceptable for Hong Kong. They unfolded in large part through battles over the attitudes and allegiance of "the Hong Kong people" and Hong Kong's business community. LEE ABSTRACT: Most observers argued that press freedom in Hong Kong has been declining continually over the past 15 years. This article examines the problem of press freedom from the perspective of the political economy of the media. According to conventional understanding, the Chinese government has exerted indirect influence over the Hong Kong media through co-opting media owners, most of whom were entrepreneurs with ample business interests in the mainland. At the same time, there were internal tensions within the political economic system. The latter opened up a space of resistance for media practitioners and thus helped the media system as a whole to maintain a degree of relative autonomy from the power centre. However, into the 2010s, the media landscape has undergone several significant changes, especially the worsening media business environment and the growth of digital media technologies.     1 August 2004 in Hong Kong 01.09.2004 / No 8 A condensed press review prepared by the Consulate General of Switzerland in Hong Kong Introduction The second legislative Council (Legco) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ended its four year term on July 13. HK’s 3rd post-1997 Legco elections will be an important milestone for HK and Mainland China. As HK becomes more politically aware, Legco is also growing in prominence as a forum in which the city’s most important issues are debated. Therefore during the month of August, all eyes were set on the September 12 poll. On the economic level, the government announced the end to 68 months of deflation as another sign of recovery and economic landmark. Macau Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau-wah was re-elected for a second term. Domestic Politics August 1st parade : On the occasion of its 77th anniversary, the People’s Liberation’s Army (PLA) in HK staged its first-ever parade; 3000 troops were greeted by 27 000 people at the Sek kong barracks. This was the first time that such a parade had been held outside the capital. The event also marked the first time all lawmakers, including democrats, had been invited to an official mainland government function. In a speech, Lieutenant-General Governor Wang Jitang, commander of the HK Garrison, said that troops were displaying „ our immense power and determination to maintain HK’s prosperity and stability“. For some observers putting the PLA in the limelight in this campaign season for the Legco elections was a patriotic message aiming at boosting support for Pro-Beijing allies.

He was the immediate-past Vice Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong, and prior to which, he was Geneticist-in-Chief at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and Professor at University of Toronto, Canada. Prof. Tsui is world renowned for his research work in human genetics and genomics, notably the identification of the gene for Cystic Fibrosis in 1989 and, later, several other human genetic diseases while conducting a comprehensive characterization of human chromosome 7. Prof. Tsui has over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 65 invited book chapters. He is the recipient of many national and international prizes, and a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada, Fellow of Royal Society of London, Fellow of Academia Sinica, Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences USA, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Laureate of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, and, inaugural President of the Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong.
